Who: Penelope Clearwater & Orsino Thruston
When: Saturday, 9 January, 1998, mid-afternoon
Where: A-Salt and Battery
What: Time for some fish n' chips and talking in public, and not anywhere near behavior-altering substances of any kind.
Rating: TBD, unlikely to be high

A cigarette, half burned-down, set between his fingers, Orsino stood outside the fish n' chips shop leaning idly against the wall.  One foot rested against the brick work, knee bent, other leg stretched out straight.  As he watched various automobiles coast by, he raised the cigarette to his lips and inhaled, blowing the smoke out of his nose moments later.  Though not a regular smoker, Orsino generally kept a pack on hand for the occassions on which he felt compelled - for instance, when he knew he needed to relax but was having trouble doing so.  Before interviews, before shows, and, apprarently, before having lunch with a friend.

When he'd woken up Tuesday morning on Penny's sofa, he'd rolled off and made his way directly to the chimney in order to floo home posthaste.  He had had trouble remembering exactly what had gone on the night before, but he remembered enough to know that there was a distinct possibility that things between him and Penny might be somewhat awkward for a while.  At least until they could sort things out rationally.  Which was the point of this meeting.

Penny was always talkative, so he hoped she'd be able to get the ball rolling.  One more long drag from the cigaratte and he threw the remainder down the the sidewalk, grinding it into the pavement with his toe.  His stomach growled, as though reminding him he had better order a big basket of fish n' chips as soon as possible.

"Well," she began as she thought about the words "Its probably one of my favourite subjects."

At the brief touch of his legs, Penny once again lamented her height. Lack of leg room had never been much of a problem for her: if had made getting on and off the brooms in first year much easier - and she'd simply worked on her reaching charms for the library.

More people filtered into the cafe and from this angle she could see the queue starting to build up at the front of the fryer. She couldn't blame them ; the fish and chips here were exceptional. But then again, she was enjoying the company as much as the food.

"Then again," she admitted "I'm highly biased."

"Biased?" he echoed. His eyebrows raised curiously. "That doesn't sound very scientific."

Just as Orsino was about to say something else, the waitress returned. She seemed to detect a change in mood at the table since she'd last dropped by, and gave them a chipper look. "How are you both coming along? Anything else I can get you?"

Orsino balked at the interruption and shrugged, looking at her ambivalently. "I'm fine." He glanced at Penny and cocked his head, waiting for her to give her own answer.

"Its scientific if you admit theres a basis for error and bias," Penny countered cheerfully.

The waitress seemed much happier, and Penny wondered if she'd been sneaking chips in the back room. If she worked here then she'd have been the size of a house ; or worse - be so sick of frying that she couldn't eat fish n chips again.

"Do you deep fry ice cream?"

The waitress paused and began flipping through her notebook before giving Penny a Look. "Don't be daft 'luv. We deep fry mars bars, pizzas and three different types of potatoes and fish. How about a deep fried twix? That I can do."

Shaking her head and thanking the waitress, Penny turned her attention back to Orsino. "Now I'm going to be thinking about deep fried ice cream all week. Its a good thing Ol doesn't have a fryer." Not that she'd ever actually use it. Hot oil plus herself was a pretty simple equation and it wasn't a good one.

"About these variables. Should they be scheduled in advance, or is a spur of the moment thing more acceptable?" Giving him her most innocent look she added "Just for clarification."

"Yeah I have yet to find someplace around here that has it," he said ruefully. Honestly he hadn't thought of the confection since he'd had it, but he had to feeling it was really going to nag at him now. "I bet Merton would try to make it, if I told him I wanted it."

Probably would wind up in Gid and Merton's house being nearly razed to the ground, but that was besides the point. And tended to happen enough anyway.

As much as Orsino liked dessert, he was quite sated by the fish and chips. It helped that this meeting had gone better - much better - than he'd imagined it might. He wasn't sure how serious they'd be taking this, but it could be worthwhile to give it a go.

"Hum, good question," Orsino said, his tone one of teasing seriousness. "Wouldn't it be most scientific to test both situations?"

"I'm probably better off not mentioning the frying of ice cream to Ol. Especially since I've asked to go running with him the next time. Knowing my luck its going to be insanely early and wet. And cold."

And knowing Ols dogged determination to get her up, she knew she'd probably end up running and the worst thing? There was a high chance that she might enjoy it. Not that she'd ever tell him that..

"He cooks? Lucky you. And yes, it would be best to test both situations. For a fair and accurate understanding. Naturally."

"He tries," Orsino amended. "Well actually he's quite good, but he has this tendency to set things ablaze, apparently."

He drummed his fingers on the table, a repetetive thrumming on the wooden surface, resting his head on his other hand. It was relaxing, and he closed his eyes briefly before responding.

"I'm glad you've thought this through, Professor."

"That could actually work. Theres a lot of things you can set on fire and call it cooking; pancakes, alcohol, flambeing is big in certain countries. So long as the thing he's setting on fire don't involve himself or the place he's staying."

Penny watched with detached amusement as Orsinos eyes fluttered close and she interupted his tapping lullaby by gently nudging him with her toe.

"You falling asleep on me now?"

He opened one eye and fixed its gaze on Penny.

"Eating lots of delicious greasy food always makes me sleepy," he said, as though it were the most obvious answer.

This was entirely true, but still, it wouldn't do very well to fall asleep in a restaurant seat. The waitress returned with their bill, which woke Orsino up quite well as he took it and skimmed it. He held it up and waved it in front of Penny.

"You paid last time, so I'm thinking it's my turn."

"Its fine, really." Penny said as she made a futile attempt to see the bill "After all, I invited you out."

One of the benefits of working was the pleasure she got in being able to pay for things ; and whilst fish and chips wasn't quite the Complete Compendium of Charms that she'd been saving up for Flourish and Blotts for months..

"Fine, she acquiesced "I'll pay for the next meal."
