orsino thruston is not amused ([info]oneandtwoand) wrote in [info]wished,

Who: Penelope Clearwater & Orsino Thruston
When: Saturday, 9 January, 1998, mid-afternoon
Where: A-Salt and Battery
What: Time for some fish n' chips and talking in public, and not anywhere near behavior-altering substances of any kind.
Rating: TBD, unlikely to be high

A cigarette, half burned-down, set between his fingers, Orsino stood outside the fish n' chips shop leaning idly against the wall.  One foot rested against the brick work, knee bent, other leg stretched out straight.  As he watched various automobiles coast by, he raised the cigarette to his lips and inhaled, blowing the smoke out of his nose moments later.  Though not a regular smoker, Orsino generally kept a pack on hand for the occassions on which he felt compelled - for instance, when he knew he needed to relax but was having trouble doing so.  Before interviews, before shows, and, apprarently, before having lunch with a friend.

When he'd woken up Tuesday morning on Penny's sofa, he'd rolled off and made his way directly to the chimney in order to floo home posthaste.  He had had trouble remembering exactly what had gone on the night before, but he remembered enough to know that there was a distinct possibility that things between him and Penny might be somewhat awkward for a while.  At least until they could sort things out rationally.  Which was the point of this meeting.

Penny was always talkative, so he hoped she'd be able to get the ball rolling.  One more long drag from the cigaratte and he threw the remainder down the the sidewalk, grinding it into the pavement with his toe.  His stomach growled, as though reminding him he had better order a big basket of fish n' chips as soon as possible.

As she walked along the road and weaved in and out of the people, Penny pulled her cardigan tighter around herself and kept her eyes focused on the pavement. She'd spent half the night up worrying about Mrs Edgecombe - her mind replaying over and over again the condition she'd been in and the look in her eyes as she'd reached out to plead for the return of her daughter.

By the time she'd fallen into bed, it had been after five and her dreams had been fitful. In them, the woman who had stumbled along the streets had been her mother, hands reaching out for Penny to find them. To come home.

And then there was Orsino. The events of Monday seemed so far away but she knew that the longer she put things off, the worse it would be. Still, as she rounded the corner and saw him lounging outside the chip shop, the familiar apprehension made an appearance. Her lists hadn't helped ; her walk to clear her head certainly hadn't helped. All she had to do was suck it up and face it head on with Ravenclaw logic and rational.

It was a kiss. People kissed all the time and the world didn't end.

It would have been much easier if she'd been a Gryffindor.

He glanced down the street and noticed the Penny's familiar gait. Raising a hand in greeting, Orsino also picked up on the fact that she seemed uncomfortable and strangely insular. Her gaze was fixed on the ground before her and she was fiddling with her cardigan. Having something a of knack for reading body language, he thought that such a level of discomfort seemed a bit extreme. Especially considering this was Penny they were talking about.

Moving away from the wall, he met her halfway along the sidewalk.

"Hey," Orsino said, looking at her to try and figure out what the problem was. Had this really bothered her so much? "I hope you brought your appetite. I'm going to look like a pig if not."

"Hey you," Penny echoed in greeting as she smiled at him and lengthened her stride to keep up with him.

The chip shop had a small cafe at the back and the buisness had been run by the same family for generations. Rumour had it that they guarded the batter recipe so fiercly that not even the sons knew it.

All Penny knew was that it smelled very good and she felt her stomach rumble gently in anticipation. "Oh you know me," Penny said lightly "I never leave home without it."

Moving closer to the door front - and closer to the smell of fish frying - Penny turned and tried to put the events of last night out of her mind. "Did you want to eat in or eat out?"

"Hm."

Orsino looked very confused for a few moments, reverting back to his usual monosyllabic responses. The question seemed to cause him more trouble than it ought. Blinking rapidly, he came to and said, "Indoors, I think. Warmer?"

It would probably be quieter and easier to focus outdoors, but it was also the dead of winter. Even if he did have adequate clothing for the weather, Orsino usually reserved any outdoor eating for the warmer months. They reached the door and he held it open for Penny and then followed in himself. It was gloriously warm in here, and he began to unzip his coat as entered.

Slipping through the door and thanking Orsino for holding it open, Penny stood for a few moment and breathed in the familiar smell before picking her way past the hungry Saturday shoppers and towards the tables with their faded red leather seats.

"So hows your week been? Its been freezing, hasn't it?" Sitting on the seat, she began to arrange herself, her fingers toying with the edge of her cardigan before shrugging out of it.

"The one bad thing about this place, is that its very easy too sit here for hours and simply eat all the delicious fish n chips."

"Well that sounds like a good plan to me, because right now I feel like I could eat their entire stock."

This was fairly accurate. Orsino had eaten that morning but had neglected to do so since. His logic had been that he'd really liked the food last time and wanted to be able to enjoy as much as possible. Except now he was finding that he didn't fancy waiting to order, and then for them to make the food and bring it out.

He took a seat across from Penny and shrugged. "But yeah, it's been good enough. Not really anything out of the ordinary."

He hadn't even seen any of the band this week, he remembered. Making a mental note to attempt to reconcile this soon, Orsino looked at the menu. Not that it was even necessary, as he knew exactly what he was getting. He wondered how long the mundane topics like weather and jobs would hold up.

"How about you? Work's...work?"

"How about you settle for eating half, and I'll take care of the rest?"

Of all the conversations she'd had with Orsino, this one had to be the most normal, and yet it also felt the most forced. She was being silly, she told herself. Worse than that, she was acting like a fourteen year old and she told herself sternly that the weather and the state of the economy were not topics to be brought up.

"Works been a bit crazy recently. Everyone and their aunt has been wanting to have their -" she turned around to make sure the restaurant was utterly empty "wards checked. We had this bloke come in the other day who wanted his redone. Which you know, I thought would be fine."

Leaning against the scarred seat, she let out a small smile at the image of the rather pompous Wizard whose voice had boomed through the office for all to hear.

"It was a rather nice, modern semi in Wales that he had and I didn't expect it to take more than a day to get everything sorted. Unfortunatly, he had neglected to inform me that that all the previous work was done in a runic language that most people don't even understand."

Pulling a hand through her hair she reached for the menu "I could have cheerfully have made him eat that book. I swear I didn't see daylight for three days. But its all done now."

Orsino smirked at her idea of sharing the entirety of the restaurant's food - she clearly underestimated his ability to eat mass quantities of food. Even if it usually did result in him feeling desperately ill for the next several hours.

She went on to talk about what she'd been doing at work that week, and Orsino found himself not understanding most of it. Nodding every so often, he sat and listened. He'd been quite a good student and remembered random things from the year or two he'd taken Ancient Runes. Unfortunately, that had been at least six or seven years ago, and not he'd be hard pressed to recover much of that information without having some sort of prompt. Still, it sounded interesting, and Penny seemed to find it fascinating (if challenging).

"Sounds complicated," he offered. Under the table his leg was tapping up and down to the beat of the song that was playing unobtrusively over the restaurant's speaker system. He was about to say something else, when a young waitress approached them for their orders.

"Oh, er, just the standard fish and chips."

Looking up from the menu, Penny smiled before placing her own order "Can I have the fish and chips with a side order of mushy peas please?" Toying with the idea of ordering a pickled egg, Penny decided against it.

"I like complicated." And she did. For the most part, except when the runes were in Archaic languages.

The waitress paused as though waiting for more and then arched an eyebrow. "Do you guys want a drink or something?"

Turning to Orsino, Penny shrugged "Can I have a pot of tea, please?"

Realizing he'd completely forgotten to order a drink and feeling a bit silly for it, Orsino looked at the waitress with his mouth slightly agape. "Oh, yeah. Ah, ginger beer? If you've got it?"

They did have it, as the waitress gave a curt nod and a pleasant sort of smile before turning on her heel to put their orders in and fetch the drinks. Orsino distractedly watched some of the other people at the surrounding tables for a few seconds before turning back to Penny.

"I'd gathered that by now," he replied, then thought she might not get what he was referring to. "Complicated, I mean."

Penny had been planning on discussing Monday. At some point. In fact, it was itemised number four on her agenda ; something to be raised after the meal and when everything else was settled.

However, the deviaiton from the Plan threw her off balance and all she managed to do was stutter out an agreement.

"You ah - you mention Seven? How is she?"

The waitress shuffled over with their drinks - and set them on the table along with the cutlery and napkins. Lifting the lid, she checked on the teabags before letting it close with a clang.

Orsino wondered why Penny seemed to find what he'd just said difficult to respond to. He's just always gotten the impression that she enjoyed problems, and figuring things out, and well even her manner of talking was complicated. Well, except right now. Fleetingly, Orsino thought that this must be what it was like to talk to him most of the time.

Unless...maybe she thought he was trying to make a reference to Monday? He hadn't been, not consciously, but now that he thought of it, it very well could have been that. It at least explained her increased discomfort. Rather than pursue it just yet, he answered her query about the dog.

"She's doing better," he said. "With the house-training, and that sort of thing. Hasn't torn up anything except an old magazine or two, but then I haven't left her alone for more than a few hours at a time since..." He cleared his throat. "Well, she's settling in nicely. It's a shame her original owners couldn't keep her, she's a sweet dog."

He looked down at the table and raised his eyebrows and said, in an attempt to lighten the mood, "Though I think she'd be a bit too small for you to saddle up."

Pouring her tea, Penny reached for the sachet of sugar and added it to the small cup.

"Oh yeah? I thought I could start small and train her do tricks. Penny Clearwater and Seven; the amazing double act. I think it could be the latest hit on the WWN."

There had always been an animal or two around her house as she'd grown up, most mermorably had been the time she'd gone to the bathroom to find the tub full of frogspawn.

Helen had had notions of setting them free to a life in the wild ; Penny had nightmares about waking up to find frogs everywhere.

"I bet she's pretty glad you chose her too. You know, they say that the wetter a dogs nose is, the happier he is? I'm guessing with all the walks and magazines she gets to read, her nose will be freezing."

"Or dripping," he added, making a face. He flicked the side of his glass with a fingernail a few times, then rubbed at the condensation forming on the sides. Actually, it sort of felt like a dog's cold, wet nose, come to think of it.

Orsino sighed. This was getting a bit off track, in his mind. Not that he didn't enjoy just talking to Penny, but he at least wanted to get this other matter settled so it could stop bothering him at the back of his mind. It was a bit like trying to relax into a comfy chair, but then just as you're about to doze off, something jolts you out of sleep - misleading, and ultimately, annoying.

"Listen," he started, only to be interrupted by the waitress returning with a trayful of what was frankly the most glorious looking basket of battered cod and steaming chips he had ever laid eyes on. "Ah, good."

"Good?," Penny scoffed lightly as her own plate was set in front of her "This stuff is guaranteed to cure all ills and set the world to rights."

The condiments basket was set down and checked to make sure there was plenty of sauce before proffering it to Orsino. One sachet of brown lay neatly beside her cutlery as she unfurled the paper napkin and reached for the vinegar.

"They have a competition in this area every year, to see who can come up with the strangest things to batter. Last year it was a bicycle, but they also have a thing about frying sweets which makes no sense to me. I love fish and chips, and I love chocolate but adding them together isn't going to work. "

Slipping off her shoe to scratch her ankle, Penny smirked before reaching for a chip "What do you think? Does the sound of Bertie Botts deep fried sound appealing? "

The idea of deep-frying things just for the sake of doing so seemed a bit silly to Orsino, but the mental image of a deep-fried bicycle was amusing. The sweets thing didn't seem so bad, though. Though he couldn't imagine how one would deep fry a chocolate bar...perhaps if it was coated in enough batter...

He decided to forgo the brown sauce, going straight to the vinegar instead. It was liberally applied to the entirety of his meal before he began to eat. Just as good as last time, possibly better considering how empty his stomach had felt.

At Penny's question he chewed thoughtfully and swallowed before answering. Sidetracked, again. "Not particularly, but then I've never liked them much." He fiddled with the napkin next to his plate. "Now, chocolate frogs, on the other hand..."

The face Penny made was one of utter horror. "You wouldn't, would you? Deep fry a chocolate frog? But they're alive. Or sort of."

She'd never been able to stomach them. She loved chocolate but there was something horribly disconcerting about eating something that literally jumped to escape being eaten.

Spearing a chip, she dipped it into the sauce before continuing. "I wonder if you can fry ice cream."

"You can, actually," he said lightly. "I don't exactly know what they do to it, but it works. It's sort of weird, but good...the ice cream's still cold, but with warm, crispy cake around it?"

Greasy warm crispy cake. And powdered sugar. Maybe chocolate or caramel sauce. That sounded fantastic right about now, but he'd only had it once, about a year and a half ago on tour...somewhere. Everything started to blend together after a while, including what you ate where, regardless of how good an impression it had made.

Orsino pushed some chips around his plate, searching out the darkest and crispiest first. He wondered if it would be silly for him to get take away from here daily. Probably. It wasn't exactly around the corner.

Nor, did it seem, was getting to the debacle of Monday Night. It didn't even have to be a debacle, but it was going to feel like one until they just sorted it out. Orsino wasn't sure if Penny had been avoiding it on purpose or not, but she was clearly a master of small talk. Something he appreciated, actually, since he always had a hard time with such things, but still.

"So, ice cream and crispy cakes aside," he said, almost reluctantly, was he stabbed at the fillet of cod with a fork, the white flaky insides breaking apart perfectly. "Hm. Well. I thought it'd be best to...just...figure out about Monday? First. Or now, anyway."

Pausing in the act of spooning some mushy peas onto the lightly fried cod, Penny replaced the fork lightly onto her plate before leaning back against the cushion.

"No. We can talk about Monday. I mean, I don't mind if you don't."

She reached for the cup in order to give her hands something to do, scalding her tongue as she took a deep sip to cover her nerves.

"I mean. Looking at it rationally, it was a kiss and kisses don't change the world. Not unless you've fallen into a very bad romance novel."

Nerves theatened to thicken her voice, but there was a determination to get this over and done with. She liked Orsino and - whilst she certainly had liked kissing him - she wasn't going to let it get in the way of their friendship. Especially as part of her suspected that he was going to ask her to brush the entire incident aside.

Smiling now, she added "I don't regret it. Any of it. It was.. lovely." After casting around in her mind for the right word, she settled the cup back on the table and began to resume her meal before tilting her head and arching an eyebrow "Do you regret it?"

Watching her answer, Orsino thought she still seemed a bit off, but clearly wasn't too bothered. Good. He swirled the straw in his glass as she spoke, letting her say what she thought. Not liking to be interrupted himself, Orsino wasn't planning on jumping in until he was sure she'd given her view. She made it easy enough, at least, asking him a direct question.

He turned his attention from his drink back to Penny, considering this. It had been just some kissing (although, he thought, with the distinct possibility that it could have gone a bit farther) and of course it hadn't been a world-altering event. If anything, he'd gotten back home the next morning feeling grimy from having slept in the outfit he'd worn all day, and cranky from the remaining hangover. Still, it had been enjoyable, and if he was being honest with himself he didn't know if it had just been a result of the alcohol.

So, Orsino shook his head, brushing his hands off on a napkin. "Not at all. I might regret the fact that I couldn't remember much of it the next day, but..." He shrugged.

"I guess I was a bit concerned you might think I was trying to take advantage. Of the situation."

"Oh no! Not at all. The thought didn't even cross my mind!" How could he possibly think that it was him that had taken advantage? He might have kissed her first, but she certainly hadn't shied away.

And from what she recollected it had been her hands under his shirt, and not the other way around.

Part of her was glad (and yes, even a bit smug) to find out that he wished he'd remembered more of it. Pushing the plate away, she shifted in the chair and leaned forward.

"Scientists ah, scientists believe in testing the variables of every hypothesis and experiement. And I- I tend to agree with them..."

His eyes darted out into the din of other late-lunchers. Considering the time, it was much more crowded than he'd have thought. Well, it was good that she hadn't thought of this negatively - he wasn't sure how aware of herself she'd been at the time. Then again, if he knew her at all, he knew that Penny would not have hesitated to voice displeasure with the proceedings, even after the fact.

Looking at her mildly, Orsino ate another chip and also leaned in a bit in an attempt to hear her better.

"Er, oh," he replied. What was she going on about hypothoses and variables now? He'd hated Arithmancy in school and...ohhh. Orsino's brow creased. "Do you...are you saying you were, ah, 'testing variables'?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]_penny
2010-01-11 04:35 pm UTC (link)
"Not quite," she admitted "I wasn't testing them that night. I don't think I was capable of any form of coherent thought," a fact she blamed entirely on her own inability to judge how much alcohol she could consume "but the.. I would be amenable to testing those variables."

"Not that you have to. I mean, if you'd want to,"she continued in a rush "The status quo could be continued."

She was rambling, she hated it when she rambled but it had to be better than stuffing her face with chips.
Although the chips did look very, very tempting.

"I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly," Orsino said, giving her a searching look over his beverage.

Penny usually seemed quite direct, even when she was talking about something particularly strange. But now she seemed intent on going off on arithmancy-related tangents that were a bit too vague for Orsino's liking. He had several ideas of what she might be implying, but he wished she would just talk plainly. She seemed uncomfortable again, and it was making him feel likewise.

"Like...that we should," he continued, then paused as though wondering whether he should continue. "Erm. Do it again?"

Well, probably not exactly what she'd meant. Given the way this discussion had gone so far, though, Orsino wasn't at his most articulate.

His fingers were wrapped around the sugar bowl as he toyed with the sachets and from the reverberations, Penny would hazard a guess that he was tapping his leg up and down.

Strangely, his nerves seemed to settle her as did his hesitation over his question.

"Yup," she declared "I think...I think thats exactly what I am saying. I mean, you don't have to agree. It won't hurt my feelings but I thought that since we both agreed that we enjoyed it, then we should try it again and see if the results are the same?"

He became aware that he was fidgeting something terrible again, and stopped suddenly. It would probably start in again shortly without him noticing, but Orsino liked to control it when he could. It tended to annoy people. His expression was neutral and actually very calm when one compared it to the nervous movement.

So, that was it, then? Penny sounded very rational indeed again, and Orsino was glad for the return to normalcy. Even if it did sound like they'd just solved a difficult equation together rather than discussed the implications of an intoxicated makeout session.

He steepled his fingers under his chin and said, rather lightly, "I think it would be, ah, amenable. Then. 'A' plus 'B' equals 'C', yeah?"

"You're agreeable to that equation?"

This felt much better - she was starting to act like herself again, and it made it much easier for Orsino to relax. Still, his hand returned to the sugar packets, lifting and dropping them idly.

"It would appear so," he told her, a slight grin creeping onto his face. His right eyebrow quirked slightly. "Is there going to be homework?"

Reaching to his plate, he popped the last of the fish into his mouth, continuing on to push the remaining chips around, leaving little trails of vinegar on the platter surface.

"Well," she began as she thought about the words "Its probably one of my favourite subjects."

At the brief touch of his legs, Penny once again lamented her height. Lack of leg room had never been much of a problem for her: if had made getting on and off the brooms in first year much easier - and she'd simply worked on her reaching charms for the library.

More people filtered into the cafe and from this angle she could see the queue starting to build up at the front of the fryer. She couldn't blame them ; the fish and chips here were exceptional. But then again, she was enjoying the company as much as the food.

"Then again," she admitted "I'm highly biased."

"Biased?" he echoed. His eyebrows raised curiously. "That doesn't sound very scientific."

Just as Orsino was about to say something else, the waitress returned. She seemed to detect a change in mood at the table since she'd last dropped by, and gave them a chipper look. "How are you both coming along? Anything else I can get you?"

Orsino balked at the interruption and shrugged, looking at her ambivalently. "I'm fine." He glanced at Penny and cocked his head, waiting for her to give her own answer.

"Its scientific if you admit theres a basis for error and bias," Penny countered cheerfully.

The waitress seemed much happier, and Penny wondered if she'd been sneaking chips in the back room. If she worked here then she'd have been the size of a house ; or worse - be so sick of frying that she couldn't eat fish n chips again.

"Do you deep fry ice cream?"

The waitress paused and began flipping through her notebook before giving Penny a Look. "Don't be daft 'luv. We deep fry mars bars, pizzas and three different types of potatoes and fish. How about a deep fried twix? That I can do."

Shaking her head and thanking the waitress, Penny turned her attention back to Orsino. "Now I'm going to be thinking about deep fried ice cream all week. Its a good thing Ol doesn't have a fryer." Not that she'd ever actually use it. Hot oil plus herself was a pretty simple equation and it wasn't a good one.

"About these variables. Should they be scheduled in advance, or is a spur of the moment thing more acceptable?" Giving him her most innocent look she added "Just for clarification."

"Yeah I have yet to find someplace around here that has it," he said ruefully. Honestly he hadn't thought of the confection since he'd had it, but he had to feeling it was really going to nag at him now. "I bet Merton would try to make it, if I told him I wanted it."

Probably would wind up in Gid and Merton's house being nearly razed to the ground, but that was besides the point. And tended to happen enough anyway.

As much as Orsino liked dessert, he was quite sated by the fish and chips. It helped that this meeting had gone better - much better - than he'd imagined it might. He wasn't sure how serious they'd be taking this, but it could be worthwhile to give it a go.

"Hum, good question," Orsino said, his tone one of teasing seriousness. "Wouldn't it be most scientific to test both situations?"

"I'm probably better off not mentioning the frying of ice cream to Ol. Especially since I've asked to go running with him the next time. Knowing my luck its going to be insanely early and wet. And cold."

And knowing Ols dogged determination to get her up, she knew she'd probably end up running and the worst thing? There was a high chance that she might enjoy it. Not that she'd ever tell him that..

"He cooks? Lucky you. And yes, it would be best to test both situations. For a fair and accurate understanding. Naturally."

"He tries," Orsino amended. "Well actually he's quite good, but he has this tendency to set things ablaze, apparently."

He drummed his fingers on the table, a repetetive thrumming on the wooden surface, resting his head on his other hand. It was relaxing, and he closed his eyes briefly before responding.

"I'm glad you've thought this through, Professor."

"That could actually work. Theres a lot of things you can set on fire and call it cooking; pancakes, alcohol, flambeing is big in certain countries. So long as the thing he's setting on fire don't involve himself or the place he's staying."

Penny watched with detached amusement as Orsinos eyes fluttered close and she interupted his tapping lullaby by gently nudging him with her toe.

"You falling asleep on me now?"

He opened one eye and fixed its gaze on Penny.

"Eating lots of delicious greasy food always makes me sleepy," he said, as though it were the most obvious answer.

This was entirely true, but still, it wouldn't do very well to fall asleep in a restaurant seat. The waitress returned with their bill, which woke Orsino up quite well as he took it and skimmed it. He held it up and waved it in front of Penny.

"You paid last time, so I'm thinking it's my turn."

"Its fine, really." Penny said as she made a futile attempt to see the bill "After all, I invited you out."

One of the benefits of working was the pleasure she got in being able to pay for things ; and whilst fish and chips wasn't quite the Complete Compendium of Charms that she'd been saving up for Flourish and Blotts for months..

"Fine, she acquiesced "I'll pay for the next meal."

"Good," Orsino said and, feeling suddenly waggish, dangled the slip of paper in front of her nose before quickly bringing it back to his side of the table. He perused it again and was again reminded why he much preferred cheaper establishments to the grander ones he and the band often found themselves at during events and tours. It wasn't just the factor of money - this meal was certainly not about to set him back - but the fact that the places were usually more relaxed and, he thought, often had tastier food.

Sorting through the Muggle money, taking perhaps a bit longer than he would have with the Wizarding variety, Orsino put the proper amount down and added in a slightly generous tip.

"So, Prof, now what?" he said conversationally, hand moving to his coat on the seat next to him. "Is class dismissed, or..."

"I don't think class can be dismissed, can it? I mean if there's not set times for something then there isn't a set time for it to end?"

Tugging on her cardigan, she pulled her hair out from the corner before slipping out the booth ; knee catching slightly on the bar of the table before standing up to button it up.

"Why?," tilting her chin up she looked at him "Did you have something in mind? Lead on Macduff."

Actually, Orsino hadn't had anything in mind. She always seemed to, though, and he'd been hoping she might take up where he'd trailed off. Unfortunately, that appeared not to be the case, and as he stood, he bit his lip. He pulled his coat on and zipped it quickly, heading toward the door with Penny.

"Ermm. I didn't, really," he admitted as they exited into the street. People pushed past them busily, and the sky had become considerably dimmer since they'd entered.

The evening was just beginning, but Orsino was at something of a loss. He'd considered the notion of going to Penny and Oliver's flat again, but he wasn't sure if this was exactly the time for that. Not that it would have necessarily been a redux of the last visit, but Orsino was more comfortable with Penny pacing things, for now. He still didn't know her that well, and admittedly was not yet completely at ease with her, though he had been getting there.

"We'll figure something out, I expect," was all he added.

"I expect so," Penny echoed as she fell into step with him. The late afternoon air was brisk and threatened to seep through her cardi and she tugged it tighter around her.

"You know, I think there might be a park up the road somewhere. I've never been but it could be fun to explore? And," she continued frankly "I think I could do with a walk after that."

Her hand slipped into the pockets and she watched the people walk by and let herself wonder what they were doing and thinking ; what had last made them smile.

"We'll figure it out as we go."
