Who: Susan Bones & Hermione Granger
When: Thursday, August 6th; 8:30 in the morning.
Where: The Bones' Home, South West England, specifically Bath, Somerset.
What: Hermione is coming over to look through Amelia's old things.
Rating: G - Susan isn't really one to cause trouble.

"Susy, mummy and daddy are leaving!" Mrs Bones voice echoed through the halls of the house. Stepping out of her room, she descended the stairs to the living room, a pleasant smile curled on the girl's lips.

"Have a safe trip, mum." Susan wrapped her arms around her mother in a warm embrace, as she looked over her mothers shoulder towards her father who was readying the floo for their departure. "Don't be silly, Su, we'll be back later tonight. We're not going to be gone forever." Susan's smile faltered for a moment, as she looked sheepishly down at her hands. Susan wasn't really thinking about that, but now that her mother mentioned it; it could be a possibility.

Her father noticed the change in her smile, and patted her shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry, love, we'll be extra careful." While Susan wasn't as close to her father as she was with her mother, it was moments like those that made her grateful for having such a strong, and stoic father like him. That smile brightened greatly, as she looked up at both of them. "All right, then. Go! Or you'll be late! Look it's all ready five minutes past!"

Mrs Bones looked over at the mantle clock and gasped, stepping into the fireplace along with Mr. Bones, she grabbed some powder and threw it down, shouting their destination as well. In a wave of bright flames, they vanished from the fireplace. Glancing over at the clock again, Susan shook her head, and headed back up to her room. She was expecting Hermione in twenty-five minutes. While the girl didn't really know what Hermione would be looking for, she kept her mind open for anything.

Picking up a duster from a shelf, she headed down the hallway towards the hatch that released the ladder to climb up to the attic. Just enough time to do some busy work, like dusting out some of the books that she inherited. Susan wasn't quite sure how Hermione was going to travel to her house, there were so many options. It was only a matter of time before she would find out, though.

Hermione gave Susan a smile too, but hers looked tired in comparison to the Hufflepuff's bright friendliness. It had been a long summer.

She wanted to go straight to work, but she also didn't want to be rude, so she brushed a little more soot from her jacket and looked around the front room. "A tour would be nice. Hannah's staying with you?"

"All right. I'll give you the abbreviated tour, just show the necessities, yes?" Stepping out into the front hall way, Susan pointed out the doors as they passed them. The house was simple in its layout, nothing extravagant, just enough humble and cozy.

After pointing out the dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms (loos) on the first floor, she began to move upstairs. "You didn't know? Oh dear. I'm not sure if I should even be telling anyone Hannah is staying with me." Biting down on her bottom lip, Susan looked over at Hermione. "No matter, I'm sure it's all right. Hannah is staying here, just for the hols." Susan wasn't about to go into details about why, but there was no harm in just letting Hermione know that she was staying with Susan.

Pausing at the end of the second floor hallway, she motioned to the ladder. "The attic is up here. I've been trying to sort through some of the things my Aunt left me, but I fear there is still quite a bit of dust. Shall we?"

It worried Hermione, and that probably showed, but she didn't ask questions about it. Times were getting worse for everyone, really, she didn't begrudge anyone needing to stay somewhere they felt safer. She didn't generally have a choice, she just never really thought of other DA members having to do the same thing.

Looking up the ladder, Hermione actually smiled. "I don't mind dust," she answered, and then almost started up the ladder first before she remembered herself and stepped back, letting Susan go up first.

"I should thank you again. Researching these... things. This summer. Has been so frustrating."

"Brilliant!" Ascending the ladder with ease, Susan waited at the top for Hermione to follow as well. Snatching up the duster, she stepped back and gave room for the girl to look around. The attic was HUGE, and looked incredibly larger than the house itself. Rows upon rows of shelves followed the entire space holding books, artifacts, boxes filled with paperwork, and pictures of Bones family members.

"It's no problem as well, really. I just hope I have what you are looking for. My mum stored all of my Aunt's things on the last two shelves on the far left." Motioning down towards the end of the attic, those items weren't so dusty, looked like recent additions to the rest of the collection.

"I haven't gone through it all, yet, but is there anything specific you need to find? I know basically what's there, and all of it is labeled accordingly."

"Well, there are a lot of small things... The biggest, the one I might need some help with if you still want to, are any cases of wizards who fought Unforgivables. I thought maybe some of the Wizengamot records, or if she kept journaled notes..." And while Susan looked for those things, which may be useful so Hermione didn't feel quite so guilty about putting her on a task that she wasn't really here for, Hermione would search for the mysterious R.A.B. again and hopefully get some new leads in these records they hadn't had access to. If they didn't figure out the significance of the initials soon, they'd have to move on to some sort of second option, or they'd run out of time.

"You don't have to, of course. Just if you weren't doing anything." She'd offered yesterday, but Susan wasn't Ron or Harry - and hence Hermione couldn't force her to study when she didn't have to.

"All right." Susan nodded trying to recall where those might be. "There are loads of Wizengamot notes that she kept from all the cases she has sat in on, and even some she just found interesting. All of them are in the boxes, and labeled by year. I could start looking through those, I imagine there are numerous cases about wizards fighting Unforgivables during the 70s."

Heading down towards the shelves, she began pulling down boxes and opening them. There was so much paperwork, and despite all the overwhelming amount of notes, Susan wasn't surprised. Her Aunt was smart, and notorious for jotting down every single little piece of information she could get her hands on. Sitting down on the floor, she pulled out a pile of papers, all of them meticulously labeled with the case number, name, and offense.

Hermione moved with her, glad that Susan knew so well where things were in the mass of files. Still, she'd like to learn Amelia Bones' filing system, to. She found the ways that people filed interesting, but it wasn't what she had time for today.

She took down a box from just next to where Susan had taken one down from, and sat across from her on the floor. As she did, she thought of something that might help, too. "We ought to set aside another set of files, too, of people who claimed to be under an Imperius curse during those times." There might be some names she didn't have, and it was important that they figure out exactly who they should be watching for.

"That's a good idea!" Susan replied reassuringly. If there was one thing Susan was good at it was busy work. Those monotonous tasks that no one else really enjoyed doing. Susan found she excelled when it came to organizing. And it seemed her Aunt was just the same, probably a trait she inherited from Amelia.

Shifting through of the papers, most of them were simple complaints of accidental hexing, and potion poisoning. Turning over another page a large star was marked one the top of it. Glancing over the paper, Susan tilted her head to the side and read off the paper. "Avery, Case number 65392 - Victim of the Imperius Curse." Handing the paper over to Hermione, this one was probably obvious. Everyone knew about Avery, right? The guy who got out of trouble because he claimed he was working under the imperius curse.

Glancing down at the next page, Susan lifted it up and turned it over to look at the back. It seemed to be a list of names, and Avery's was at the top of that list. Glancing further down, a lot of the names didn't seem familiar, a few were vaguely familiar, but what caught her attention was the alphabetical listing of the Lestranges. "Um, I don't know if this is helpful, I actually can't tell what it is. It looks like a list of names, maybe a list of Death Eaters?" Susan wasn't quite what she was looking at, and the entire thing sent a shiver up her spine. This was dark stuff she was getting into, and the whole thing made her nervous. Holding out the paper for Hermione to see, she looked back down at her pile in her lap.

Hermione took the list with a soft hum and scanned over it. There were some names that weren't as familiar as others, but none that she hadn't seen before. A few were smudged, and she frowned at those and then sat it aside to decipher later, then opened the box she'd taken down.

"Your aunt was very organized," she pointed out needlessly, but there was a note of respect for that in her voice. And she was trying to ignore the fact that she was pretty sure she'd seen Susuan shiver when she'd said 'death eaters'. She hadn't come here to scare her, and DA member or not Hermione wasn't sure she wanted some of her peers to know just how dangerous it was. There wasn't any reason they had to be terrified, too.

"Yes, she was. Impeccably so. My father says I take after her in that aspect. He says I need to have things in order to function." A sheepish smile was offered to Hermione as she placed the pile of papers to the side, and took out another stack from the box.

It was difficult for Susan NOT to be at least nervous about the idea of the Dark Lord rising. After the death of her aunt, all this talk about the Dark Lord really began to show itself. While she did lose her Uncle, and Grandparents to Death Eaters, that was before her time. Losing her Aunt was a tough blow considering how similar they were, and how close they were. It really made Susan realize that there is a threat out there, a very big, very real threat, and while it scared her silly to think about it, she knew that should the time come when she was needed to fight to defend her family, and friends she would be there for them.

"It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, I suppose. Diligence is key, yes?" Another one of those reassuring smiles was given to Hermione as she looked down at the papers once more, shifting through them.

"That...." Hermione felt flush suddenly, and blinked back a sudden sting in her eyes that was there fast and surprisingly. "That's what Professor Moody always said," She agreed with a nod, and then the feeling was gone and she could focus on the page again.

There was a Rosalind Bungs on this one, but Hermione had already researched that name. It hadn't panned out.

"Oh." Susan looked up from her papers as what Hermione said actually sank into her brain. Why was she using Moody's name in the past tense? A look of concern washed over her face, as her head tilted to the side. "What do you mean that's what he always 'said'?" Frowning slightly, Susan wasn't one to push someone for information, but the way that Hermione was acting, and her reaction to hearing Moody made Susan a little more than concerned.

"This isn't just about Wizard's who have found Unforgivable Curses, is it?" Susan didn't know exactly what made her say that, but everything was just starting to make sense -- and get completely confusing all at once. Professor Dumbledore's retirement, her Aunt's death, Hermione wanting to go through Amelia's things, and now using Moody's name in the past tense? Normally, Susan would over look such things, but coming from Hermione, a perfectionist by default. Such a slip like using "said" instead of "says" wasn't common unless something was up. Susan wasn't angry, don't get her wrong, she was just concerned for her friend, and all her friends.

Hermione blinked at the paper, and then up at Susan. She was slipping - not sleeping enough, spending too much time with Ron and Harry? Was that why she'd slipped up? She knew it was an innocent enough statement, but nerves were so high lately everywhere, she should have been more careful.

"I only meant, that was what he said, when he was our Professor." Oh, brilliant save, Granger. She could almost hear Ron in her head, snickering about her bad attempt to cover up the slip.

"That wasn't very convincing, was it?" She asked Susan after a moment, then sighed.

Actually, it would have been convincing if she hadn't asked about it afterward. A sympathetic smile curled across Susan's lips, as she shook her head lightly. "Hermione, I understand stress is high in a time like this. I mean, it's so difficult living in these times. It's easy to feel helpless. I know I do."

Glancing down at the papers once more, Susan sighed slightly before composing herself. "It's like falling down a bottomless pit, never knowing when your going to hit rock bottom, praying that you never do, but knowing it has to come soon." Finally looking back up at Hermione, there was a slight flicker in her pale blue eyes as she looked at her friend.

"I guess in times like these you have to find that one thing worth holding on to. That one strand of hope that sews all your hopes and dreams together, and pray that in the next minute, or day, or week or month or year or lifetime, that everything will right itself in the world and you no longer have to pray." Once more that smile resurfaced. "But in the meantime, remember that you have friends who are willing to listen to what you have to say, and can more than likely sympathize with your struggles. You're not alone."

To be completely honest, Susan wasn't only speaking in hopes of helping Hermione, she was also speaking to reassure herself. Sometimes she just needed her own pep talk.

Hermione wished she could see things that way - stands of hope that tired them together, dreams that they could hold on to. She held on to Ron, to Harry. To knowing that they had to do this, because if they didn't then who would? And to knowing that Harry was caught in this against his will, without his say so, and so if he had to fight, they'd fight with him. Otherwise, Ron was right, and they were just as useless as the people who chose to believe the Daily Prophet and bury their heads in the sand. Those were the things she held on to - hopes and dreams just weren't practical enough when that was what you had.

She pursed her lips, looking back at the pages. She didn't know how to answer Susan - didn't want to tell her that those dreamy wishful thoughts weren't going to help. Instead she said, "It's not only about looking for unforgiveable cases, no." and then, a moment later she added, "Professor Moody. And... And Hagrid, and Professor Burbage. They didn't retire.."

Susan stopped shifting through the papers and just watched Hermione closely, and when she finally began to open up, she had forgotten about the papers completely.

"You mean...?"

Was Hermione implying that Professor Moody, Hagrid, and Professor Burbage were... "they're dead?" Hands instantly went to cover over a gasp, as Susan just waited for Hermione to confirm or deny her question. It didn't seem possible. Professor Moody is... was?... is one of the greatest Aurors known to the Wizarding World, to lose him, that's a heavy blow.

"What about Professor Dumbledore? Him, too?!"

Hermione pursed her lips, but nodded. "Dead," she echoed, and she hadn't been close when Hagrid had fallen, but she imagined she could see the surprise on his face and the blood still. They'd brought his broom back to the Burrow when they'd went to gather the bodies later that night after the Battle...

At the question, her eyes went wide and she looked at Susan quickly, shaking her head. "No, no. Not Professor Dumbledore. That... I mean, they couldn't very well cover that one up, could they? He's really retiring." And likely dying, and definitely sick, but she didn't add that bit.

Susan sighed heavily, shaking her head. She didn't know if she should cry, or hug Hermione, or what. While she was never close to Hagrid, Moody, or Burbage, she could sympathize in a way with losing someone dear. Glancing down at the papers in her lap, she swallowed a bit and fell silent for a tiny bit.

"I'm sorry, 'Mione. I really wish there was something I could do to make this all better." Turning over papers absentmindedly, Susan just nodded again. "I really do, I wish I could just wave my wand, and make it all go away."

"I think we all do," Hermione admitted, and for a moment she felt closer to Susan than she ever really had to a girl other than Ginny. She didn't have girlfriends per se, just girls that she was on better terms with. But friends was a word reserved for a certain spectacled, wild haired boy and his red haired best mate. It felt good, though, letting Susan know what had happened. At least a small part of what had happened.

"But helping with this, even just letting me see these..." She gestured to the files she was holding. "This does help, so you shouldn't feel like you haven't..."

A smile that could speak on so many more levels, than any words that Susan could find curled across her lips. Hearing from Hermione that what she was doing helped even a little bit made Susan feel a little better. It was a horrible feeling -- being helpless -- that a lot of the times Susan would do anything within her power to help whoever with whatever she could.

While Susan wasn't as close to Hermione as she was with Hannah, there was that mutual friendship. She always got along with her, and while other girls would get annoyed with her "know-it-all" personality, Susan admired Hermione for knowing so much.

"Well, I am just glad that I can help, Hermione. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask, I would be more than willing to help." Once again that smile brightened her features.

"How is Harry handling Professor Hagrid's death? I know they were very close."

"Harry?" Hermione looked back down at her lap, turning over the file that Susan had given her with the list of names and looking at them absently because she knew at least at that question that she couldn't afford to give anything away.

"He's ... Well, he's got other things to focus on." Hermione was worried about that, really, because she wasn't really sure that it had really hit Harry yet, or that he'd let it hit him.

Other things to focus on? Susan just smiled sympathetically and nodded returning her attention back to the papers in her lap. "Sometimes that's best, staying busy, and what not." Coming to the end of the pile, she reached into the box and pulled out another pile of papers.

"How have you been?" Susan glanced briefly at Hermione, that smile lingering for a little bit longer on her lips. "I imagine it must be hard just diving into all this work after such a significant loss." Susan looked down at her Aunt's notes, knowing all too well that feeling. However, she knew how to hide her emotion, swallowing it down deep inside, and focusing on her friends instead. It wasn't a healthy solution, that was for sure, but it made her feel better to know she was helping her friends.

"It's what we have to do," Hermione gave the answer before she'd thought about it, and then sighed again - but only for a moment. Then her lips drew into a tight determined line, the look she had when she was writing a particularly hard essay and wanted to finish it in one sitting. It had to be done, and it had to be done quickly, and it had to be perfect. So, it would be.

She looked back up after a moment, though, holding up the file for Susan to see. "You don't mind if I take a few of these with me?"
