Who: Severus and Narcissa
What: Finding common ground, maybe
Where: Malfoy Manor
Severus was long past the days when the thought of spending an afternoon somewhere quite as impressive as the Malfoys' home gave him any pause at all. It was impossible not to be reminded, any time he was faced with ostentatious grandeur, how much weight he had attached to prestige and to a name, in his youth - but these days the chagrin he felt at the memory of his sycophancy was somewhat dulled. Personal embarrassment mattered very little.
The anxiety he felt now, as he ducked quickly inside the house and handed his cloak off to a long-suffering house-elf in the entrance hall, came instead from uncertainty. He had some idea of what Narcissa might want from him, of course. Very few people invited him for purely social calls, and he had no doubt that the invitation he had recieved was motivated by something other than a desire simply to have tea. There was always the nagging possibility that someone suspected something, however unlikely ... and he didn't quite trust Draco not to have considered sharing his own treason with his mother. It would have been an infernally stupid thing to do, but in Severus's experience, children were infernally stupid. So he was rather more tense than he might have been as he made himself at home in the drawing room, waiting for his hostess.
