Snape's expression didn't change. "I am deeply flattered." He wondered if she had any idea how little capacity he had to lead students outside of his own House. It wasn't very different from trying to influence his fellow Death Eaters - the immense pre-existing antagonism made it pretty damned hard. "But, as you know, the Ministry has recently been delivered into much more capable hands - and while any transition must be somewhat troubled, it's my guess that Hogwarts will soon be headed the same way. Only a guess," he added, and it was true. But he couldn't imagine Hogwarts would be allowed to operate without so much as a proper spy for very long. "The Dark Lord will no doubt provide someone suitably strong." Small comfort for you, I'm sure.
"Draco never bothered to tell me anything, either," he continued. "He was always extremely resistant to any help I offered. Not even the vow I made to you was ever enough to buy his trust. No matter where I am, I can't help him if he insists on keeping to himself. But it may be that he's only following the Dark Lord's instructions ... in which case we ought, of course, to leave him to it." He watched her impassively, expecting that suggestion wouldn't go over very well.
