Who: Any students eligible to go, also any Professors and Aurors can feel free to have been ordered to patrol to protect the kiddies on this day.
What: Hogsmeade Visit
Where: Hogsmeade
When: Saturday
Warnings: Varied!

The not so newly appointed Headmistress of Hogwarts checked the last name off on her parchment list and dropped her hands to her side, watching with a stern but mildly worried expression as the stragglers loped off in the direction of the Village.

"Is this a good idea?" She asked, not looking away from the quickly moving backs of the students and thus giving the professor standing beside her no indication that they were being spoken to directly. Nevertheless, Minerva had a way of speaking that meant whether the question were meant for you or no, you felt responsible for answering it.

"I did not foresee any dire events on this day, Headmistress...." Professor Trelawney intoned, her thick and dreamy voice somewhat questioning, not certain that the question had an answer at all, and certainly not sure that she had found it.

It did manage to snap the Headmistress out of whatever thoughts had kept her standing still, however. McGonagall's mouth drew into an even tighter, sterner line and she sent the quill and parchment flying back to her office and started, herself, down the road toward Hogsmeade Village. As she adjusted her large hat, words carried on the wind that might have sounded a bit like, "Of course you didn't, barmy bat."

Professor Trelawney, fortunately, did not hear.

"That sounds like fun!" Evie said enthusiastically. She was completely at a loss as to what they were meant to do, so she was quite happy to go along with any suggestions Alfie had.

"Hey, maybe afterward we can take a look in Honeydukes," she ventured, hoping to have some input and not look like she was just tagging along with him.

"Sure!" Alfie's smile became a little more honest at the suggestion. "I have to stock up on sugar quills and things, so I always have something to shove at Drew when he runs out of sugar..."

"He is a little over exuberant at times, isn't he?" Evie giggled. "If he wasn't so nice, I'd be a little afraid of him."

The pair spent an awkward day wandering around their usual haunts, each adjusting to the fact that they were with the other. Evie, for her part, kept trying to make conversation, but eventually she ran out of things to say. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt so awkward around Alfie. He was one of her best friends, for crying out loud!

Finally they were back at the school, standing outside their Common room, the awkwardness not having abated at all now that they were alone, out of the public eye.

The most awkward part of all of it was that this would have been a fine day if it hadn't been a date. If they'd just been out like friends like they'd always been before, he wouldn't have felt half as strange and awkward as he moved with her from shop to shop. They'd actually had awkward silences - Alfie thought he might never have experienced one of those before...

He was relieved when they headed back to Hogwarts, but then they were the only people outside the Common Room after everyone else had tramped in, and he remembered suddenly why he'd been so bloody scared in the first place.

She wanted to kiss him.

Kiss. Him.

Right. He shoved his hands into his pockets again, and looked at her expectantly. "So..."

"So..."

This was the part where she was supposed to kiss him, right? And she would do that, by... by leaning in and pressing her lips to his, right? And it would be lovely and romantic and...

this was too much pressure. She didn't know what she was doing, and being pretty certain that she was going to screw it up and traumatize the pair of them, she screwed her eyes closed and leaned in, throwing caution to the wind. Might as well get it over with.

And she missed.

When her eyes popped open, she went bright red, realizing she'd managed to hit his cheek. Still, that was better than some places she could have hit, right? Eyes open this time, she aimed, leaned in, and this time their lips connected.

A second later she pulled away and looked at the floor, at her shoes, at anything but him. She didn't want to process what she had thought of their kiss before he said something about it.

Alfie thought he should probably be to one who leaned in - after she did he felt a little upset that he hadn't been able to do that - but he closed his eyes too, and she ended up on his cheek, which at least made him laugh a little before he was going to correct that, and she ended up leaning in again before he could.

She hit on the lips, this time, and he closed his eyes again when the kiss was in the right place. He moved his lips against hers, but his lips suddenly felt very dry and he didn't know how to move them, anyway. It ended up smacking a little when she pulled back suddenly. He thought they were probably supposed to do it longer than that, but didn't say so.

"Um." He said, and then licked his lips while he tried to think of something better to say. "Thanks."

Well, that wasn't much to work with. "You're welcome?" she squeaked, cheeks still red. She supposed it had been nice, but she hadn't felt any fireworks, or any sparks even. It had just been warm and maybe a little fuzzy.

They were meant to be friends, she realized. Not anything more. But at least she'd had her first kiss and hadn't completely ruined it.

"Thanks," she said finally. "If I could have picked anyone to have my first kiss with, I'm glad it was you. You're a good friend, Alfie."

Hopefully, that would convey the message that she wasn't intending to kiss him again, while preserving both his feelings and their friendship.

She said friend and didn't look like she was going to try it again, and all the tension flew out of Alfie's body. He smiled - maybe the first wide, usual smile from him add day - and then spontaneously moved in to hug her. "You are to, Evie."

Friends. Because he certainly hadn't felt anything but like a complete tosser while they'd kissed.
