Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!1997: 09, !complete, alfred cattermole, julien dorny

Who: Alfie & Julien
What: Alfie has a present for Julien even though it's Alfie's birthday
Where: Outside the library
When: Sunday after lunch
Warnings: DRUG ABUSE! or... not..

Julien had no idea why Alfie had bought something for HIM when it was the other boy's birthday, but he really didn't have the kind of chracter that would argue the point. Plus he didn't want to upset the Hufflepuff, see above re: birthday.

He lingered around outside the library for Alfie, nervous and thinking about the presents he'd given; was the encouragement charm working okay? Maybe he shouldn't have given Alfie a prototype charm... what if it just got worse and worse until it turned into some kind of bully... what if it WAS too loud and too aggressive and too corny and not subtle and helpful the way he'd wanted it to be... what if...

He decided to cut off the what if's and returned to shifting his weight anxiously from foot to foot and waiting for his friend to show up.

Julien took the charm from Alfie like it was something alive and small and fragile and he suddenly felt like crying in relief and didn't know why. He didn't though.

"Just... we just hold them and then... there should be an incantation with them." he said, and then, "Wow, Alfie, I mean... this is... thank you."

Alfie beamed, maybe blushed a little, but he dug into his pocket for the little paper that had the incantation on it. He had two little slips, and he gave one to Julien and kept one.

"They last for like half an hour, right? Should we lock the door or something?"

Julien was reading over the incantation already, looking up and nodding almost distractedly. "Yeah, it's better that way. No one to interfere with you while you're under."

"Er. Are you any good at locking charms?" Because Alfie really, really wasn't. He'd never seen the point of locking things, most of the time, so he never practiced them.

Julien seemed... really distracted by the daydream charm. Alfie was happy that he liked the gift and wasn't going on about him not needing to spend birthday money. But he wasn't sure you were supposed to get that distracted by them, really.

Julien looked up to the door and flicked his wand, muttering a quick spell that made the hinges of the door disappear, melding into the rest of the wall. "We'll be in trouble if a troll tries to walk through but otherwise we should be fine." he said, still not really paying much attention to anything but the charm. "Are you ready?" he asked, his tone bordering on impatient.

Alfie blinked at the impatient tone, a little uncomfortable, but managed to smile and nod. "You'll have to .. um. teach me that charm." But Julien didn't sound like he wanted to do anything but use the charm, really, so Alfie put his own into his palm and picked up the incantation paper. "Okay, I"ll read when you do."

Julien nodded, once, curtly, and then reeled off the incantation fast, his words almost tripping over themselves. He gripped the charm tight, tight enough that it cut into his hand a little bit, and then the daydream hit and Julien relaxed, so much so that you wouldn't have realised just how tense he'd been until that moment. He lay back, back, back, head on the couch back and sighed, smiling, seemingly at peace in a way he never was usually.

Alfie wasn't nearly as quick, and he stopped mid-incantation when Julien slumped back onto the sofa blissfully relaxed. He just stared at him for a minute, concerned and not wanting to touch him in case it would hurt something. But then... he looked happy, so Alfie assumed he was having his daydream and that was how he was supposed to be, so he worried less.

And took the time to really look at him. He'd never seen Julien relaxed, and he was ... well, it was nice. The way his neck arched back like that, and he was smiling and not self-conscious. Alfie licked his lips, scared that he liked that look on Julien so much, and dragged his eyes away when he felt his body start to respond to that.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

He moved a little further away from him on the sofa, and finished his own incantation.

Half an hour later, after an adventure where he was a pirate fighting another pirate and then racing to buried treasure, he came to on the far end of the sofa, where he'd been slumped over the arm.

Julien's daydream had ended a few minutes before Alfie's, as he'd started his off a few minutes before, but he continued to lay where he'd fallen... only he wasn't relaxed anymore, was tensing slowly back up, his eyes closed like to open them would be to turn to stone.

"Nngh..." Alfie shifted in the seat slowly and sat up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. It was like falling asleep and having the most wicked dream, except he felt like he felt... well, when he fell asleep in class, really. Uncomfortable and sore from being bent over, and also a little confused about what was real and what wasn't.

When Julien heard Alfie move he finally opened his eyes and looked up; he looked around and something must have upset him because he stood up and then lobbed the now useless charm at the nearest wall, swearing and sitting back down on the sofa hard, running his hand through his hair. He sat there for a second and then remembered that Alfie was there. "Wow... sorry... uhm..." well that was embarassing. "Did you have a good one?"

"Pirate..." Alfie rubbed at his eyes, blinking a few times, and he wasn't entirely sure what had just happened. He looked to the wall where Julien's charm was now laying.
"Um, you didn't like yours?"

Julien shook his head, got up and retrieved the charm and stood there, turning it end over end in his fingers. "No, just... they don't last long enough. Don't you think?" he asked, looking down at the coin shaped thing and not back at Alfie.

"Oh." Alfie raked a hand through his hair, and Julien didn't look relaxed at all now. He looked... disappointed? Alfie didn't think his present had gone over as well as he'd wanted it to.

"I guess. I don't know. I got the treasure, and all..." But he felt as let down by it as he did by regular day dreams. He thought he just preferred reality.

Julien looked like he was about to say something but then he sighed and smiled and slipped the charm into his pocket, going over to Alfie. "Sorry... thank you for that. It was... I loved it. Thank you so much." The smile on his face hadn't seen daylight before now; there was something more than gratitude there and Julien himself didn't know what it was.

Alfie smiled back, a little unsure. "Yeah? You didn't seem to really...." But he trailed off with a shrug. "Glad you liked it."

"Don't seem what?" Julien asked now concerned as if he'd never lost his temper to begin with. "Oh... I'm sorry about... about throwing the thing just... it was a good daydream and I just wanted it to last a little longer. Y'know?"

"Oh..." Alfie could understand that, he guessed. "What was was yours about, then? There are all different varieties, right? I was a pirate."

Julien fidgeted because for some reason he found telling Alfie what he'd daydreamed about a bit personal, even though Alfie would have had the same one had he had the charm Julien had been given. "It was just... nothing. A field. A sunny day. And I just laid back, it was..." he shrugged. "It was nice. Was your one fun?"

Alfie looked confused. Lying a field on a sunny day was brilliant, yeah. But you could DO that, for real - why would you want to do it in a daydream instead when you could just go outside?

"Huh? Oh, yeah. I was after buried treasure. Seemed really real..."

Julien nodded. "I've had that one a few times. I think it's one of the more popular ones. Always too much going on in them for me though." he said, his smile lightening his words somewhat as he didn't mean them to offend Alfie.
