Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!1997: 09, !complete, alfred cattermole, julien dorny

Who: Alfie & Julien
What: Alfie has a present for Julien even though it's Alfie's birthday
Where: Outside the library
When: Sunday after lunch
Warnings: DRUG ABUSE! or... not..

Julien had no idea why Alfie had bought something for HIM when it was the other boy's birthday, but he really didn't have the kind of chracter that would argue the point. Plus he didn't want to upset the Hufflepuff, see above re: birthday.

He lingered around outside the library for Alfie, nervous and thinking about the presents he'd given; was the encouragement charm working okay? Maybe he shouldn't have given Alfie a prototype charm... what if it just got worse and worse until it turned into some kind of bully... what if it WAS too loud and too aggressive and too corny and not subtle and helpful the way he'd wanted it to be... what if...

He decided to cut off the what if's and returned to shifting his weight anxiously from foot to foot and waiting for his friend to show up.

Alfie knew it was his birthday - but because it was his birthday it was the only time he'd have been able to get this for Julien, too. Because he didn't have the money to do it himself, but he'd owled his mum for two and because it was his birthday she'd given in and gotten two of them.

One for him. One for Julien.

He was late getting to the library, though. And when he got there there was a distinctly squirming bulge under the chest of his sweater vest. He'd started out just holding the kitten - it needed to know the lay of the castle, didn't it? But one sight of Mrs. Norris and it had retreated into his clothes and was refusing to come back out.

"Hey," He said, coming up to Julien, then "OW! I SAID NO CLAWS!"

Julien smiled a hi back and was about to voice one when Alfie shouted and he startled a little bit, looking at Alfie with confusion and then down to the lump in his jumper. "Uhm..." he said, pointing a hesitant finger. "I'm assuming that wasn't to me?"

Alfie was grinning side still, even though he looked pained and was currently digging an arm up under his jumper to try to tug him out. "Audrey got me a ..." He finally got a hold on it and had to extract its claws from the weave. "Kitten."

Julien looked as Alfie appeared to be doing some kind of conjuring trick but then his expression softened into an almost 'awww' as Alfie produced the kitten from under his jumper. His hand went out to pet it but he didn't until he was told he could. "That's adorable... is it a boy or a girl? What did you call it?"

"He's a boy," Alfie had at least checked that. "I've never had a pet before. Go on, you can pet him. He doesn't have a name though, I'll have to come up with one." He may have been a little hyper - the combination of birthday, plus kitten, plus the last of the chocolate that Drew had left him was a heady combo.

Julien reached out hesitantly and petted the kitten between the ears with a crooked finger. He smiled when it didn't bite/scratch/attack him and risked letting his finger curl under it's tiny chin to pet it there, where he felt but couldn't hear the rumbles as it purred. He laughed softly at that. "He's very sweet."

"He's fierce, like a tiger," Alfie corrected, but jokingly, and he cradled the kitten into the crook of his arm, then grinned at his friend. "Come on. I want to show you your present."

Julien watched as Alfie tucked the kitten away and then followed his friend obediently, if still confused. "You really shouldn't have got anything for me." he said hesitantly. "It's your birthday."

"That's why!" Alfie grinned again, shrugged, and then turned and started through the hallways to the classroom they'd used to play cards in.

"My mum got it, really. The only way I could was on my birthday, because my grandparents send money."

Curiouser and curiouser, as the saying went. Something Alfie's mum got? He accepted that part but it was learning about where the money came from that made him stop. "Hey, you can't spend your birthday money on me!" he said, slightly alarmed. This would go so badly once Alfie realised he wasn't worth it.

Alfie stopped too, then rolled his eyes. "It's not my birthday money!" And he sounded so sure of that that it would be hard to question him. Of course, it was his birthday money, but he didn't think about it that way. He'd gotten one too, after all. "Come on!"

Julien didn't understand how money that Alfie had received on his birthday could NOT be birthday money, but the eye rolling and the insistent tone stopped him protesting any further. He held his tongue and followed Alfie on.

Alfie grinned again when Julien fell back into step, and walked faster until he got to the doorway and pulled the door open for Julien, then followed him in.

"So, how's your week?"

"Yeah?" Alfie grinned, but he still looked a little confused. "You like the ones where you're just relaxing, then?" Because that really seemed like something you didn't need a charm for...

"I like the ones where..." Where he could be truly alone, peaceful, nothing to do or think about or say for half an hour... where he could lie back and it was almost as if he didn't exist at all. But he didn't say that to Alfie. "... where I don't have to do much." he ended.

Alfie let his head fall back against the back of the sofa and he chuckled. "I do that all the time for real, though. You should try it for real something, just laying around in the grass and not doing anything all day. It's nice."

"There's always something..." Julien said softly, thinking about how the escape he found in those charms was something he'd never be able to find anywhere else. He needed the charms to get it, that perfect feeling of not being.

"Sure, but you can get far enough away that no one can find you to bring it up," Alfie shrugged, then sat up a little. "Maybe when you don't have homework or shite, I'll show you where I go to skeeve off classes."

When he didn't have homework? When Julien didn't have homework he MADE homework. He couldn't fathom the idea of being far enough away from everything that no one would bring it up either, because it was always buzzing and fluttering in the back of the Ravenclaw's overactive mind. "Where is it you go?" he wanted to know.

Julien took that the wrong way and ducked his head down, looking chagrined. "I'm sorry... I wasn't thinking." he apologised, taking Alfie's words as sincere. He felt that they were... close... but clearly he'd overstepped a boundary.

Alfie's eyes went a little wide and he reached for Julien's shoulder. "Hey, I didn't mean. I mean..." He let go of him after a second and shrugged, "Just meant you should go out there with me. Get away from shite for a day. I didn't mean I really wouldn't tell you...."

Julien wasn't expecting the friendly touch and even after Alfie had moved his hand the other boy still felt the warmth lingering in that place after the heat of Alfie's hand against him. "Oh..." he said, rethinking what Alfie had said under that light. He had far too much work to do really... "I'll go there with you."

Julien returned the smile because he couldn't not - he was rapidly finding Alfie's smiles infectious - and he turned a little awkward at mention of Alfie's twin. "I'm sorry I didn't get her anything..."
