Alfie wanted a long shower. Another one. He was pretty sure he still smelled a little bit like the cauldron muck that Peeves had covered him in anyway, and he didn't mind per se, except that people kept looking sideways at him when they got too close and he was sick of explaining that it wasn't his fault. He'd had to get out of his room, because the smell was still clinging in there to everything and his bed was particularly bad, so he'd headed to the Common Room - hoping that in a bigger space he wouldn't be so noticeable. He didn't think it was working, really. Even the cats were keeping their distance, and usually he got on really well with his housemates' pets.

Storming into the Common Room, Evie dumped her books on a table and flopped into the comfy armchair next to it, her face still red and scowling with the anger she was having trouble letting go of. That boy - and she realized now that she still wasn't sure who he was - was the absolute biggest jerk she'd ever had the misfortune of meeting, and she was sure that she wasn't going to be able to stop herself from taking her anger out on the next person who was stupid enough to approach her.

But as the moments ticked by, and she sank further and further into the delightfully squashy armchair, Evie began to calm down. It wasn't very often that she got this angry, and it really took it out of her when it did happen. Her eyelids drooped to half mast, and she let her mind wander away from the unfortunate encounter on the pitch.

Idly, she let her fingertips trail over the material covering the arm of the chair. She wondered if the other Common rooms had chairs as nice as this, or if not, what they did have.

He missed seeing her come in, because he was a little distracted flipping through the Quidditch magazine he'd found on the table he'd chosen in the common room. But when he did finally look up, he saw just her profile and smiled - he hated being left alone, so seeing a friendly face was the high point of the night, and he got up and abandoned the magazine in favor of coming to sit in the chair next to hers.

... He'd forgotten already how bad he still smelled.

"Hey, Evie!" He said happily, falling into the chair.

Bearing in mind Evie was almost asleep when Alfie came over, her reaction wasn't entirely unreasonable. She jerked back to full consciousness, jumping half a foot in the air and coming back with a squashy sort of thud into the chair.

"Good grief, Alfie, you scared the dickens out of me," she gasped, clutching her heart, which was pounding loudly. She'd always been the type to startle easily, and she was glad more people didn't know about it, because she was sure there were people out there who would have made a game out of sneaking up behind her to see her freak out. Alfie, she knew, had no malicious intent, so she wasn't entirely pissed off at him. Just... out of breath.

And in the process of trying to regain her breath, she finally caught a whiff of the boy. "Good grief!" she exclaimed again, louder this time, and this time accompanied by a horrified expression. "You smell like... like... like someone farted out a foot! A dead foot! Into a sewer!"

Okay, admittedly that wasn't her most eloquent of similes, but she couldn't think of any other way to describe the dreadful aroma emanating from Alfie.

"I do?" Alfie took stock of himself again, nose scrunching up. "Yeah, I do. Farting out a dead foot though, brilliant..." He shrugged though, like it didn't bother him that much, and relaxed into his chair.

"Peeves threw a dirty cauldron at me and this Slytherin girl in the hallway. I've showered like at hundred times, and but it hasn't really worked to get it off. Sorry I scared you..." He felt a little bad for making her jump. He hadn't noticed that she'd been asleep.

Her breathing almost back to normal, and her nose starting to acclimatise to the odour, Evie relaxed. "That Peeves," she remarked. "Someone really needs to put a stop to his rubbish."

She sighed. "Alfie, do you know much about Slytherin?" she asked. "Because I just had the most infuriating altercation with a Slytherin, and I don't know who he was or what his problem is, but he made me want to smack him. Me! I don't get violent!"

Just thinking about it was angrying up her blood all over again, and she took a couple of deep breaths to calm down, immediately regretting the action as the aroma filled her nostrils once more.

"Have you tried going to one of the professors for a charm or potion or something to take the smell away?" she asked.

"I know about their Quidditch team and the ones we have classes with, I guess..." He trailed off, but then he caught what she'd said and went all wide eyed and immediately protective. "What did he do? Who was it? What was he doing?" He didn't like anyone messing with his sister, or his friends, or his sister's friends. With all three of those things, that was pretty much everyone in Hufflepuff covered.

"I was just sitting there, basking in the sunlight," Evie began. "I had been studying, but I'd given that up as a bad job, and stacked my books neatly beside me. So suddenly this shadow falls across my face, and it's him, and he's being a complete twat and threatening me that he's going to hit me with Bludgers and generally acting like an aristocratic asshole."

Good, now she was angry again. "I mean, no one OWNS the sodding Quidditch pitch!" she fumed. "He had no right to act the way he did. And then, after he'd been being a patronizing, condescending asshole for long enough, I stormed off."

	"Sounds like any of them, really." The asshole part, at least. "Was it Vaisey? Muscled bloke with brown hair? Because he's a giant prat," Alfie wasn't sure if he'd ever seen Evie angry. Evie considered, trying to remember exactly what the boy had looked like. "No, he was... sort of thin, tall, blond and very, very pale," she said slowly. "Grey eyes, and a self satisfied smirk on his face that I just wanted to smack off him."

She huffed again and squirmed back into her chair. "And it wasn't as if I wouldn't have left if he'd just asked me nicely. It was just his whole attitude, like I should feel so lucky that he was deigning to speak to me, and didn't I know that he was the king of everything that had ever existed?"

Suddenly, she heard herself and how childish and petty she sounded, and she giggled, her face returning to its normal smile, though the redness remained in her cheeks.

"But enough about me," she said. "How was your day, apart from being bombed by Peeves?"

Alfie's eyes went wide. "You mean Malfoy?" How could anyone not know who Draco Malfoy was? Alfie couldn't even tell the difference between the Slytherins most of the time, but he knew to stay out of Malfoy's way - or any of his friends.

"Evie! He's the Quidditch Captain this year. And a Prefect I think. But his Dad's a ... a.... " He lowered his voice to just a hiss. "A Death Eater! He went to Azkaban and everything. It was in the news. You have to stay away from him!"

The red immediately drained from Evie's face, leaving her pale with shock and fright. Draco Malfoy?

"Oh bollocks," she swore. "I knew I knew him from somewhere, I just couldn't place him... and now I'm probably on his hit list." She was getting a little panicky now. She couldn't believe that she had mouthed off to Malfoy, of all people.

"His Dad's a Death Eater?" she squeaked, eyes wide. "Oh Lord, Alfie, what am I going to do?" She shrank back into the chair, as if the cushions would shelter her should Malfoy decide to storm the Hufflepuff Common Room with a band of followers, bent on retribution.

Alfie looked concerned - pained in a sort of way which meant he was thinking too hard about something that was too serious for him to be thinking about. "Don't worry!" He said quickly, coming to sit on the arm of her chair in case she started crying or something. "He gets into loads of fights every year I think. And I bet he didn't know who you were, right?" Seventh years from other houses rarely knew anyone under their year.

His presence near to her felt somewhat comforting. Not completely, but a little at least, and he was trying, which was important. And what he was saying was true - Malfoy was pretty high and mighty. He undoubtedly had no idea who she was, and he might not even have noticed what house she was in.

"You're right," she said finally, after a long period of silence. "I'm going to go up to my room, Alfie, but thanks for calming me down." She struggled her way out of the chair, gathered up her books and turned to leave, but glancing back over her shoulder, she offered a parting piece of advice.

"Alfie? Go and see Professor Flitwick. He can at least help you out with some sort of charm to mask the smell until it wears off by itself." She smiled sympathetically at him, then left.
