Logan stuffed his hands in the pockets of his jacket, his eyes casually glancing over the remains of the cigar in the ashtray. He thought about tucking it between his teeth before he walked out the door. It'd give him something the chew through as a means of getting through the ten thousand and one things rolling around inside his head. He even reached for it and picked it up, before he sighed, set it back down, and walked out the door. How many times had he made this walk? He hadn't really kept track since he and Carol had started doing...whatever it was they were doing. It felt longer though, a sensation Logan equated to the cold water that seemed to be running through his veins. It'd been there ever since earlier in the day when they'd first hatched this plan to dupe Wilson. It was like all the dominoes were falling perfectly into place, leading to the point where Logan was left picking up some kind of ruin. How many times had it played out just like that? Logan could still see their faces, more often than he cared to admit -- which was ever. It was a long list too, but Logan's whole life was made up of ghosts. Even Steve Rogers, who Logan had sat down, shared a beer with, and shaken hands with in just the last week, still held some shape of a spot on that roster. Now, with Deadpool shaking up the quiet he'd so come to enjoy, and Carol being the only sensible choice to use for the plan? It was hard for Logan not to punch something. He kept himself collected. After all what was the point of trying to make up for being a slight bit on the over-protective side, if you were just going to punch things on the way to her door? No. That wasn't what they needed. It wasn't the right time for Logan to be bull headed, hard as that was for him to keep under his hat. Steve was right, they needed to stay focused. He needed to be on point and on the ball; to do everything he could to make sure this went exactly right. Logan knew himself well enough to know the only way that could happen, is if his last interaction with the woman wasn't him being, well, him. Steve understood it, but that was no surprise, but what about Carol? She wasn't someone who needed him to look after her. Was that what made it so hard? Of course, Logan also figured part of it had to do with Kitty, and her news from back home, but all that needed to be put aside -- even if he couldn't wipe it from his face. He had a door to knock on, and a blonde to take to dinner, where maybe he could manage to avoid getting himself punched. |
