Who: Eric and Dylan (and Eric's kids!)
What: Eric hates it when his kids idolize his brother
Where: the grocery store
When: Saturday afternoon
Eric had a very strict weekend routine. He doubted that his wife, Jackie, would share his opinion that this Saturday routine was set in stone, but to him, it was a ritual that could not be broken. Because his radio show was only on the air Monday through Friday during the evening commute, he was lucky to be home on the weekends most of the time, and he felt it was his duty to spend Daddy time with his two children. Typically, he would wake up around 9, make breakfast, then rouse the whole family to join him, and then take the kids out grocery shopping and to the car wash, just to have some quality family time, while also accomplishing important tasks. It was efficient, and Eric liked that about it.
They'd gotten a late start today - it was nearly noon when he set Mia down in the child's seat in the shopping cart and asked Aaron to pick up the flier containing information about what was on sale. Running late made Eric uneasy, even when he didn't really have anywhere to be at any specific time, and he felt himself rushing a bit to begin the shopping trip, forcing his son to take two steps for every one of his just to keep up. And then, as he stopped to examine a canteloupe, he heard the only words that could make him feel even more uncomfortable.
"Uncle Dylan!" Aaron called out, jumping up and making a beeline for Eric's brother, who was apparently shopping for himself further down the produce aisle. "We don't run in the store, son!" he called out after the little boy, but he knew it was too late. He was going to be forced into an awkward discussion with the one person he really hated to spend time with.
