I find myself a bit confused.

Where, exactly, does the line fall between joining a friend for outings and dating? What does one do on a date? And how do you know if you're on one?

[Tahiri]

It seems I need a woman's advice.

I need a gift. For a special person. One I care for. But I do not want it to send any sort of message that may be awkward.

What do I do?

[Bo H]

Are you enjoying school?

If you like her, and you get the whole butterflies in the stomach thing, and you want to kiss her, it's a date. I mean, as long as she feels the same, it's a date. If only one of you feels that, it's the friendzone.

Butterflies? Is that what they're calling it?

How do you tell if she does, too?

If "it" is the fluttery feeling in your gut, then yeah.

Yeah, that part is harder to tell. Honestly? Telling her, and then asking how she feels is the only way to know for sure. Unless she does it first. Or get someone else to ask. But it's better to ask yourself.

I suppose that may be a good term for it.

To be honest, I have led wars, fought battles, killed and been killed. I have even held babies. And that is still the most terrifying thing anyone has ever proposed.

Welcome to dating women, bro. Or, maybe dating.

Why must it be complicated? In the end, isn't it merely meant for procreation anyway? It should be simple and scientific.

Not really. It's about love. You know, finding your soulmate and all that. You can have a kid with anyone, but finding your perfect match is different.

Isn't the phrase "soulmate" a bit far fetched? That implies there is only one person for everyone.

I don't know about whether there's only one or what, but I do believe that there are certain people that are just destined to be together. But that doesn't mean you can't have something meaningful with someone who's not your match, because that's part of figuring it out. Like, my ex-wife, she wasn't the one, but I did love her and we had a good thing for a while, I think. Does that make sense?

I cannot believe in destiny. I prefer to think we make our own fates.

It makes sense. I just have a difficult time understanding how any of this is possible.

It is not their fault that you are far advanced for your age.

I believe, if you wish, you can take a test and move ahead a year so you are more mentally in line with your classmates.

They can be nice and still be behind you intellectually. Many of my friends are. The children in first grade are probably quite nice as well.

Is this the part where I should step in and

Why not ask her?

I'm not exactly an expert on this sort of thing. Granted I've not been on a date in ages.

Why not?

Welcome to women.

Suppose I've gotten comfortable with the notion of being alone is all.

I think I was better off before this was a thing.

So had I. Damned women ruining everything.

You are aware that I'm not exactly a typical woman, right?

What kind of special person? A friend? A date?

You are the closest thing I know to one.

She is...more than a friend. At least, I think so. I would like her to be more than that, as well, but I do not wish to push things.

You might want to know some more girly women at some point.

Okay, this is based on some of what I know, some of what I've read. Bearing in mind that I know nothing about this kind of thing, it's not like Jacen and I are even really in a relationship in the conventional sense.

Flowers. Women like flowers. Go for a quality bunch without going crazily overboard. Classy, you know? And maybe something that speaks to who she is. Does she have a favorite author? A good edition of a book she loves might be an idea. Or tickets to a show. That's the kind of thing only you can work out, you know her.
