I went outside.... there were birds in the trees. But they didn't sing. They couldn't, their voices were scared away by the darkness and tension. They're still afraid, waiting for more death. It's in the air. Buildings are rebuilt but life is forever altered. The fear and knowledge.

But they'll lock it away and pretend. They will lose their voice like the birds and instead being marionettes of normal lives. All the while wondering.

What are you on about? Bloody birds not singing because their voices were stolen? You sound like Dru

Life. Thoughts and fleeting memories. The mind to protect itself but is also afraid. Singing means becoming visible. Means vulnerability. Hide and pretend and maybe the monsters don't come back.

But they do. They always do.

Yeah, people like to think if they ignore it enough, it just disappears. Doesn't ever work out that way, though.

Why are you thinking about all this anyway, pet? Bit heavy, isn't it?

Indeed.

It is most strange, isn't it? That they pretend, that they wonder, after what they've seen.

Not so strange. Don't want to see, to believe. Lie and pretend but nagging is there. Dreams and nightmares that can't be real. Because to be real is to be crazy. Think it will protect them. It has to.

Perhaps strange was the wrong word, yes. Foolish, I suspect, is more accurate.

It won't protect them. Not at all.

Very foolish.

Protects the idea of sanity but not the life. Just another day in Lawrence. Robots attacking. Everyone sick. Things can't be explained but life will go on. Until it stops. The most vulnerable are the ones who are from here and are blind to it all. Because they will never see until it is too late.

The idea of sanity, yes. Nothing more. Their true sanity will likely be ground away by each new wave of things they refuse to accept as reality.

People are, as a general rule, rather stupid, aren't they, my dear?

Are you saying that the people of Lawrence will just...make themselves forget or something about everything that happened? Why would they do that? If they do that they can't fight and protect themselves.

Because its easier to explain away all that happened, all the crap they dealt with, than try to face the fact that monsters that are real.

But they are real. Ignoring them won't make them go away. It'll just leave them unprepared.

You know that they're real. The rest of us know that for a fact as well. But the general populace has no clue. Demons, hellhounds, all of it is the thing of stories, of nightmares and that's where they'll push for it to remain because it doesn't matter to them about being prepared or not. All that matters is going back to life as they knew it as best as they can.

[info]notmymemory

Because safer for them. In the mind. But the mind is never really safe. But they want normal and life and don't want to see the impossible, to see its real. To say its real means they are crazy and locked away. Branded as crazy. Lies and cover ups. The world will spin until it stops.

You ever see Men in Black? There's a point, real close to the beginning, where the secret alien cop is talking to the NYPD cop that just saw an alien flip the fuck out and cause trouble. Aliens aren't public knowledge there like they are in our versions of the world. The NYPD guy asks him why they keep it a secret and says that people could handle aliens being real. Here's what the tired old alien cop says back:

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."

My dad was a superhero. He was also a single dad, so sometimes I'd stay at the Avengers mansion when only a couple of them were going off on a mission, other times Thor or Hercules or Beta Ray Bill would just come hang out. I saw some shit. Aliens, resurrections, gods, monsters, robots, and even weirder.

And outside those walls, people are still spray-painting "mutie freak" on everything. People are idiots. They want a world where the round peg goes into the round hole and the square peg goes into the square hole and nothing ever strays from that happy little worldview. Being idiots is how they stay sane. Except sometimes I wonder which of us are really the idiots. The sheep, or the costumed shepherds that die for them.

I guess that does make sense and I can understand it. I guess I'm just wishing people had open minds about things.

...but what's Men in Black?

Me too, dude. Me too. Would've been nice to talk to somebody about dad dying.

It's a pretty awesome movie. The sequels, ehhhhh, but the first one was good. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith circa '97, before he started drinking Crazy Cruise's kool-aid. You should definitely add it to your must watch list.

I'll do that.

Everyone has a different way of dealing with things, River. Some will face it, most will hide from it. We're asking them to believe a lot.

Not asking. She knows better. Don't want to believe so they won't. But the birds stopped singing because of it. I like them. Nature. Its real here and now its scared.

Human nature is complicated and simple all at once.

They may come back, you know. It's nearly winter. Here, the birds leave when it's cold and don't return until it's warm again.

Human nature is complex in the fact that no two people are exactly alike in any way, physical, mental, emotional... the way we deal with things varies drastically from person to person. Yet, so many pieces of it are so entirely predictable... It's interesting, isn't it?

And so it will always be. The majority are not ready and will not ever be. That is why there must always be people willing to watch, to sacrifice, to stand, and to not waver, so long as the night exists and the worlds turn.
