That was jarring as fucking hell. Next time I see Jackie fuckin’ Estacado, I’m gonna punt his dick all the way to Giants stadium. Somebody mind pointing me to the airport? I gotta get back to New York and, hopefully, some punting lessons.

How long did it take you to start buying it a little?

Yeah, that does sound like something he'd do. Even the one I know.

Tom Judge. Nice to meet you too, Peeta? The hell kind of a name is Peeta.

I thought I was still in the Games...it took weeks for me.

You know of him? I'd never heard of him.

Likewise, Tom. It gets easier. You have to find an ally. Someone you feel like you can trust. That's how I started. It won't happen overnight.

The Games?

Once upon a time, I was a priest. I'm familiar with a lot of it. Where I come from, a lot of our religious stuff got it wrong, but here it sounds like a lot of what I learned might be more accurate.

Trust's in short supply these days, but you're not wrong. I'll give it some thought.

The Hunger Games. Apparently, I'm from a book series as far as this world is concerned. Felt pretty damn real to me...

Well, you've got that on your side, then. At least you understand. I still don't, not entirely.

Believe me...I know the feeling...

No offense, but I'm not clicking that. If that's true, then it would feel like maybe the weirdest possible invasion of privacy.

There's a lot of different interpretations. Theology can get confusing quick, believe me, I know. If you get the basic gist, you're probably good to go. Lucifer's the proverbial toddler that gets pissy when dad brings the new baby home and throws a tantrum. The new baby is us, humans, and dad's God. Except this toddler's almost as powerful as God, so his tantrums are kind of a bigger thing than just kicking the floor and crying. Lines were drawn, there was a big war, Lucifer and his crew lost and got hurled down into spiritual time-out. He's still pissed about it and when he gets out, he's gonna take it out on us. Or, uh, I guess in this case he is taking it out on us.

Last couple times I trusted, things didn't turn out so good. Makes me a little twitchy to do it again, but I guess there's not a whole lot of choice this time.

...most people would not think twice. I appreciate that. In any case, I'll still explain. In the words of that, I suppose, article: "The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle until only one person is left." I got lucky...there were two Victors the first time I went in. ...the second time, we were down to five or six when I woke up here.

Oh...that explains a lot, actually, thank you.

Last time I trusted, I nearly cost my friend her life and myself my own. But you're right, here, there's not much of a choice. You just have to choose the right person. A woman here sort of took my friend and I under her wing...she reminds me of a friend from home, so I trust her. She's yet to give me a reason not to.

Way I figure it, I wouldn't want anybody reading about my life without my permission, so I'm not gonna do it to somebody else. No offense, but that's kind of a fucked up game, man. What was it all for?

No problem. Part of my job back when I wore the cloth was explaining all this religious stuff in a way that made sense to people.

Hopefully I can find the right person. I'm usually okay at taking care of myself, but this time I think it might not be a bad idea to have some back-up.

Thank you for understanding that. Seventy-five years ago, the districts rebelled against the Capitol. We've been paying in tributes as penance ever since. By tributes, I mean the twenty-four that go into the Games every year.

That helped a lot. More than I thought, really. Now I'm glad Cindy stopped me from making the deal...

May the odds be ever in your favor. That's what they'd say to you at home. I'll stick with wishing you luck.

That's a damn long time to be paying penance.

If she stopped you from doing that, then it sounds like you definitely made the right call in who to trust. You never want to make deals with Lucifer or any demons. If it even sounds like a deal, even if they call it something else, don't agree to anything. Nine times out of ten, they twist whatever wish you're making, and even when they deal straight with you, the payment is always your soul. Not a thing you want to give away, especially to anything that comes from Hell.

You too. If you ever have other questions about the theology stuff, give me a shout. Might as well get some use out of the four years of seminary school.

It's not even over back home...soon, though, if the books are really my future. There's a light at the end of the tunnel even if we have to go through a whole lot of darkness to get there.

My friend was dying. I didn't know what else to do and I didn't know any better, anyhow. I know better now.

Thanks. I might, then.

If you can see a light, take my advice and cling to it. It's maybe the only thing that comes along less frequently than trust.

I get it. I had a friend back home, a long time ago now, that I'd probably have done the same for.

Anytime.

Don't I know it...believe me, I am.

She means the world to me...I couldn't lose her. He said all I'd owe was a favor. Should've known it was too good to be true, really.

Good. Hope's a hard thing to get back once you've lost it.

Best way to operate with them is to remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Good. You'll do fine, then.

A long, long time ago, yeah. Been a long time since I had time to do much for myself, and before then...well, been a long time. These days I don't know if I'd be able to sit still for that long. Why do you ask?

I don't know if I'm fit to be around people, kid. Don't even know if I could sit still for that l Could probably bring a beer or two and Dunno if I'd be able to sit still that long, but I might check it out. Thanks, Peeta. There anybody I need to talk to before I show up?

No problem. Hard to find people to trust if you don't meet people in person, right? Tenel-Ka is the woman's name, the one who's running it.
