When: After the Dinner and the storm out.

Status: Complete

Belle had seen the looks, the cold reactions to Rumplestilskin, to Mr Gold as he was known by many of them. Of course she had, she was by no means stupid and on some level she'd been expecting it. But it was easiest not to focus on it right then. Emma had not expressly said he couldn't stay. And at least until the morning she suspected she wasn't about to kick them out on the street. The others had all been reasonable enough if slightly wary and Belle wondered if it bothered him at all that people reacted like that. Probably not.

Soon enough she tugged at his arm once people had made their excuses and left or just left quickly and walked him to the room she'd been given to stay in for the time being. She wasn't here forever most likely, especially now. But she'd go where he was. Because 28 years was a long time to be separated from someone, and then to be pulled away from him again for near a month was just unfair. But he was here, the Seal had brought him here via the other Belle and she probably had some things to explain. So did he. And of course she had a promise to ask him to make.

Because there was a reason they feared him, the Dark One. Maker of Deals and the man that twisted words and logic to suit his purpose, and this was the man she loved. Oh but she'd known that going in. Of course she had. She'd just thought maybe, somehow she could help him change.

Once she'd closed the door to the room she looked up at him as she'd done in Storybrooke. She remembered it all, they both did and she knew in her heart and her soul that she loved him in spite of everything.

"I missed you. I think I said it back home but its been weeks, I've been here weeks and I missed you. I love you." she said softly, knowing there were probably still people downstairs talking and discussing it all. She probably should have cared more about being a topic of debate. But now that he was here, she didn't think she did at all.

Now he was fully aware that he deserved the distrust and anger that had been demonstrated upon his arrival in the house. Truthfully, he hadn't anticipated so many from their world to be here, but that was another matter altogether, really. Gold wasn't certain how many of them remembered their lives in the land of fairytales, or how much Emma truly knew, but he hadn't been nearly as bad in Storybrooke as he had been in the land they were from. After all, being in Storybrooke had deprived him of his power, of the Dark One. That was one thing he had truly disliked about the Curse, was losing that part of himself, but so be it. He had needed to find his son, so he paid that price willingly.

But that unpleasantness didn't matter right this second because he had Belle back. He would let the other stew and fester as they wished over him, he didn't exactly care. After all, he was still banking on the fact they all hated Regina more than they hated him. Because in the end, Regina had always been vicious and malicious, not hesitating to kill when it suited her. But Gold? He made deals where both parties got something out of it. Yes he still manipulated that to his own benefit, but he didn't exactly deliberately hurt people if the deal he made didn't call for it or construe it.

Again, he smiled at her words. It was true that he didn't smile enough, but he smiled more as Mr. Gold than he had in their own world as Rumplestiltskin or the Dark One. Then again, he did carry a great many guilts and pain with him, but Belle helped lift their weight from him when she around, with that smile of hers. He returned her kiss, keeping her close to him with his one free arm.

"I love you. Whatever this world has in store, we will face it together." It really did mean something to him that there was someone on his side, someone who loved him and believed in him even when he'd hurt her previously. He wasn't as much the monster he'd once been, if only because the Dark One had been taken from him in the world without magic. But this place, he could feel it was different, and he had yet to discover how that affected him, the Dark One.

She found she didn't ever want to let go. Being with him again and having him return her love rather than shun it in favour of his power was the best outcome she could have imagined. Having him here made it all better, even if she knew things would have to change. They'd likely have to leave the comfort of this house, they'd be alone, just the two of them because she knew the distrust wouldn't go away. This was Rumplestilskin, and those that didn't know him as she did, well Graham was right, there'd be wariness.

Taking him by the hand Belle led him to sit at the edge of the bed, there was not a lot of room anywhere else and elsewhere in the house probably wasn't the best plan just now. Tonight they could stay here and then the next day she'd need to think, to talk to Emma maybe. Work something out. But for now there were things she had to say to her love.

"I need you to know that she's here. Regina. But what I said to you back in Storybrooke. It has to still stand. You have to promise me my love, promise me you won't kill her. There's still darkness in you, we both know that. But if you give into that hate then you and me...we won't be able to make this work. You know that."

Her hand was still clasped in his as she leaned her head against his shoulder, just comfortable, truly content for the first time since she'd been with him in Storybrooke, and before that for the first time in 28 years. He would promise her, she knew he would. And he didn't go back on his deals. His word was his bond. And this, it wasn't for Henry much as she cared for the young boy and it most definitely wasn't for Regina. It was for him.

For them.

He knew that he wasn't going to be welcome in this house, and he was perfectly fine with that. So all ready he knew other arrangements needed to be made, but at least for tonight, they were allowed to stay because he was getting his footing in this world. Gold didn't exactly have much trouble adjusting as he'd made the adjustment once before going from Fairytale Land to Storybrooke. But here, there was magic, which he would have to account for. Would he revert back into the Dark One? Would it remain held at bay because the magic here might be different? Or was it going to manifest itself in different ways? He didn't quite have the answer to that, so he was just going to have to wait and see how this place affected him.

Sitting down on the bed, he leaned his cane against the bed, ensuring that it didn't fall over or clatter out of reach should he need it again. Looking at Belle, he of course inwardly hated that she brought up not killing Regina. That was much like asking him to give up his magic altogether. Regina deserved to die for the things she had done, not least of all taking Belle away from him. But Gold was a patient man, he could work something out to get around it. He always did have a plan. Looking Belle in the eye, he nodded a bit.

"I promise, Belle. I won't kill her. We only just found each other again, I don't want to lose you." Which was the truth of the matter. He didn't want to lose Belle again, and he was fairly certain he could somehow find a way to hurt Regina or have something happen to her that didn't involve him killing her. But that was for a later time. Right now, he was focused on Belle and he squeezed her hand within his, giving her a smile. "I am so very glad to see you again. In the time that you've been here without me, how have you been? Did you find it difficult?" No doubt she had found it difficult to some extent given she'd been locked up in Storybrooke for 28 years, so this world was undoubtedly a strange and frightening experience for her.

She had her promise. It was all she needed and now she could just be happy with the man she loved. Oh there were things they'd need to talk about. She wanted to know him and there was still so much he was keeping from her. She knew that. There were stories she had been promised but had not yet had. But there was time for all that. When he squeezed her hand she smiled broadly. "You won't lose me. I told you. We've had too much time kept apart and I have no intention of letting that happen again."

As for this world. Oh she could babble about it for hours. "Oh its confusing. I don't understand a lot of whats in this world but I thought you could show me. There's so much I want to see." she grinned. "I did have popped corn. It's strange but I like it. And there are so many kinds of teas! Fruit ones, or you can have it cold. Did you know you could have it cold! And I've seen some movies. Henry seemed very insistent that I needed to do all that sort of thing, said it was important. And honestly they're a lot of fun. He's a good child. Kind, which is surprising given the kind of upbringing he must have had with her. He's said he'll help me find movies and books that I'll enjoy. There are so many books, its wonderful Rumple, I love it. I don't actually even know where to start"

She laughed, seeming to realise she was probably overly rambly. "Sorry...I went on a bit. To answer your question, its not always easy no. I got confused at some of the things everyone finds simple but I'll get there. I can pick things up easy enough and it'll be fine. I have you." she added not caring that perhaps it sounded ridiculously sappy. She was allowed to be.

There was indeed much that he was keeping from her, from everyone. With Belle, it was because he was a coward, always had been. He was afraid. He had all ready lost so much in his life, and he didn't want to add Belle to that list. There had been a time when he had thought taking the Dark One's power would fix everything, but it had not changed the fact that he was, at his deepest core, a coward. Finding Bae had always been his motivation in everything he had done, but now that search seemed to be at a halt again being in this world. Though he smiled at Belle's words. "Good. The last thing I would want is more time apart. It has been far too long." And at least in this place, as far as he could tell anyway, the Dark One wasn't overtaking him the way it had in their homeland. Oh he could still feel it lurking within him, stronger now than it had been while under the effects of the Curse, but not as potent as it had been in Fairytaleland.

As Belle babbled, Gold didn't say anything on the matter, merely smiled wider, finding her enthusiasm endearing. It was good to see that her curiosity about the modern world had not been harmed by having been held prisoner by Regina for so many years.

"No, don't apologize. I like seeing your enthusiasm. And I will show you anything you like. When we have the means, I could also take you anywhere you wish to go." Oh he show her the world if he could. He could easily weave a spell to make it all happen, but he was going to very much try for being good and not using magic for trivial things. After all, he no longer needed magic to find Bae as they were in a different world, and one that had magic. "You are a very intelligent woman, Belle. You will pick things up with ease. Before you know it, you will be a font of knowledge about this world." He smiled warmly at her. It was more than relieving to have her back. Finally, he had regained something he'd lost, and he was going to hang onto it this time.

Now this, the man sat beside her, smiling warmly as she babbled on about this new world and its wonders. This was the man the others didn't see. And maybe a lot of it was that he didn't want them to see him. Belle knew the others were scared of him, she'd known his reputation long before she'd ever met the man himself, of course her father had been the one to call on his help during the war. But little by little, she'd gotten to know Rumplestilskin, and Belle had fallen in love. Not overnight by any means. But it had happened. And it was because of moments like these. The fact that in this world they were together, with no curse, with nothing keeping them apart. It was everything she could have hoped for and more besides.

And he wanted to show her the world.

"We have time." she told him almost dreamily, tilting her head so it rested at his shoulder, her hand still clasped tight in his own. "You can show me this world and what it means to be part of it. We can go for tea, we can visit places. We can just be ourselves can't we?" she fantasized. All the things in her books, maybe now she'd see them one day. She'd learn, she'd read and she'd study the things in the books and then her love would take her to those places.

But not for now. For now she was content. "All those places we can go, and right now, do you know there is nowhere I'd rather be than here, with you. You...will stay here tonight won't you? Now that I have you here, I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep unless you stay. Then tomorrow we can go somewhere. Make a start. What do you think?"

There were an extremely select few people that had ever truly known Rumplestiltskin. One of them was dead, another of them lost, and the last was sitting right here beside him. Well, she didn't know everything about his past, but she'd seen glimpses, the times when he would lower his facade just enough for someone to see deeper inside him. It was frightening, but Belle had always frightened him because she made him feel. To pretty much everyone else, he was a monster, he was the feared Dark One, and he didn't care if any of them ever saw beneath the surface. He didn't really care about what they thought of him because in his mind, he was right to do what it took to reunite with his son. Even if that meant having had to groom Regina in magic to the point where he knew she would cast the Curse that would take them to the world where Baelfire had gone.

"Yes, we can just be ourselves," he said gently, looking down at their hands that were locked together. That was just the issue, wasn't it? When it came down to it, Rumplestiltskin had a bit of a dual personality. He was the Dark One, which was staunchly different from the true Rumplestiltskin. Or had it been that the Dark One had simply twisted and corrupted the man Rumplestiltskin had once been? It really was difficult to tell where Rumplestiltskin ended and where the Dark One began sometimes. But there were times, especially in places where the Dark One was subdued, that he was able to be more himself, a little more free from the hold of that power within him.

"Of course I'll stay here. I wouldn't dream of being anywhere else. And we can't have you losing sleep over such a fact." He smiled at her. "Come the morning, a new adventure awaits us." He was rather curious at how different this place was to Storybrooke, and what better way than to discover it with Belle?

He could be so very kind when he wanted to. When he wasn't thinking about it, she supposed. The instinct was there within him, and he showed it to her perhaps more than anyone else in this world. She wished people could know that side but she knew too that he'd never show it. She wasn't naieve enough to think she'd fallen for the perfect man. She didn't have a Prince or a hero, she had the Dark One. She'd only fallen in love with him after being the subject of a deal. After he took her from her home. Oh part of her had wanted to go, to be the hero women just didn't get to be. To have adventures. And love had found her. Unexpectedly and simply enough with a dark room and thick curtains that had so bothered her.

"I think I'm going to like it here." she told him as she leaned down to lie on the bed still keeping him with her as she did and mindful of hurting his leg as she did so. It was still strange sometimes that he had such an ailment. He never had back home. But then she supposed that was his magic. Or perhaps the curse. But they were without the curse here.

She laughed at the comment about her losing sleep. Sleep had meant so little for so long other than an escape from her miserable life in that cell. Time she didn't have to wonder who she was and why she was there. What she'd done to deserve it. But with him she knew she'd sleep. She knew she felt safe for the first time in such a long time, weird as that sounded.

"The first of many adventures." she said sleepily, accompanying it with a soft kiss. "I love you Rumplestilskin. I always will."

There was undoubtedly more of the man he used to be still alive somewhere inside of him than he realized because it was in moments like these and only with Belle where such things came through. With Belle, there was no expectation, no deal that bound them together. It was love. It had taken him much by surprise. While their relationship had started merely as his needing someone to help with the upkeep of his castle, it had changed. He really hadn't realized just how lonely he was until Belle was there day in and day out. Talking, asking questions. While at first he didn't know how to respond, she didn't seem to mind. But she'd remained persistent in pushing through the barrier that he'd erected between himself and the world. The world that had taken so much from him. The world that he had put so much pain into. Yet in that dark room with thick curtains, he'd found he'd fallen in love with the optimistic woman that had dared to shed light into his home and into his heart.

"I think you'll like it as well." He smiled, shifting to lay down, being careful about his ailing leg. It was a nuisance, but there was little that he could do about it. The Dark One was able to take that ailment from him when it was in control, but Rumplestiltskin didn't really know how it did that. Perhaps it was the power itself, or that it just healed the person's body, riding it of any and all ailments.

"I look forward to them." He responded to her kiss. "I love you, Belle. I never stopped loving you." Which was an admission he hadn't exactly meant to make, but there it was. And at least for now, neither of them need worry about anything else. Come morning, they would have things they needed to begin thinking and talking about, but those things would be saved for daylight after they both slept peacefully. Rumplestiltskin couldn't remember the last time he had a peaceful sleep.

Her heart seemed to beat quicker and almost feel like it stopped as he spoke those words. Every time he said them she felt like it was the first time she'd heard it. And yet this time was different wasn't it? He'd told her he'd never stopped loving her. Meaning what he'd said in the Dark Castle about his power being more important than her, it wasn't true. He'd simply been scared. If true loves kiss would break any curse, then it would break his and he needed that power.

He needed the magic.

Belle had a dozen questions about that, about why, about what could be so important as to deny himself the chance to be free of it again but those could wait. There was no sense in ruining what was a beautiful moment. His first night here, their first night lying like this in...well ever actually from her point of view. And he'd told her he'd never stopped loving her.

Resting her head at his shoulder and feeling entirely comforted by his closeness to her, Belle drifted off into the most blissful sleep she'd slept in a long time.
