Now he was fully aware that he deserved the distrust and anger that had been demonstrated upon his arrival in the house. Truthfully, he hadn't anticipated so many from their world to be here, but that was another matter altogether, really. Gold wasn't certain how many of them remembered their lives in the land of fairytales, or how much Emma truly knew, but he hadn't been nearly as bad in Storybrooke as he had been in the land they were from. After all, being in Storybrooke had deprived him of his power, of the Dark One. That was one thing he had truly disliked about the Curse, was losing that part of himself, but so be it. He had needed to find his son, so he paid that price willingly.
But that unpleasantness didn't matter right this second because he had Belle back. He would let the other stew and fester as they wished over him, he didn't exactly care. After all, he was still banking on the fact they all hated Regina more than they hated him. Because in the end, Regina had always been vicious and malicious, not hesitating to kill when it suited her. But Gold? He made deals where both parties got something out of it. Yes he still manipulated that to his own benefit, but he didn't exactly deliberately hurt people if the deal he made didn't call for it or construe it.
Again, he smiled at her words. It was true that he didn't smile enough, but he smiled more as Mr. Gold than he had in their own world as Rumplestiltskin or the Dark One. Then again, he did carry a great many guilts and pain with him, but Belle helped lift their weight from him when she around, with that smile of hers. He returned her kiss, keeping her close to him with his one free arm.
"I love you. Whatever this world has in store, we will face it together." It really did mean something to him that there was someone on his side, someone who loved him and believed in him even when he'd hurt her previously. He wasn't as much the monster he'd once been, if only because the Dark One had been taken from him in the world without magic. But this place, he could feel it was different, and he had yet to discover how that affected him, the Dark One.
