Who? Loki and Needy
What? Watching the movie he's 'from'.
Where? One of the few theaters still playing it!
When? Earlier tonight.
Rating? Harmless, aside from spoilers and gratuitous angst?
Note: Will contain spoilers from the movie (Thor [2011]), so if you still haven't seen it yet, be cautioned... and then go watch it, seriously.

So far, Loki was not entirely sure what to make of this experience. The trip itself had been uneventful, and they had obtained a great deal from the concessions counter (popcorn, ‘Icees’ - his own was the ‘cola’ flavor, because there was something excessively ironic about blue ice at this point - nachos... none of it familiar, they didn’t have these sorts of things in Asgard). The theater was not very full, so they had ‘good seats’. Loki had been feeling an annoying thread of unease from the time the plans had been made, and sitting in the dark watching the screen flash with images leading up to this movie he was supposedly ‘from’ only intensified it.

He had contemplated inviting his brother along as well, but the idea had quickly been dismissed before it had ever reached action. Yes, his brother had already seen it, and while Thor claimed to have been okay with him, Loki didn’t entirely know how well that would stand up to seeing this unfold again - being reminded of exactly what his brother was capable of becoming.

If he was honest with himself, he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted anyone to be present, but he sincerely doubted he wanted to try to explain that to Needy. While Thor’s trust in him was confusing, it at least had some logic behind it - they were family, regardless of realities and bloodlines. They had known each other - versions of each other - their entire lives. There was a reason familial ties were often the hardest to sever. It made sense that his brother would wish to trust him, regardless of whether he should or not.

Needy, however, had literally no reason to trust him, and that made the whole thing harder to even consider explaining to her. Especially given that the explanation itself (words like I might be exactly the monster they make me out to be at the edge of everything, the impulse to push, to see if he was really as capable of ‘evil’ as everyone else thought, to see if he was truly everything he’d read about himself) would likely drive her away - and probably Thor, as well, and with the two people he had gone, what else would there be but becoming that monster?

So, no. He had decided not to attempt to convince her that seeing this alone would be better.

It didn’t take long for him to feel completely uncomfortable with the film, but it was tolerable up until the point he had ‘left’ from - Thor’s banishment to Earth, and the story detailing what happened from there for his brother was hardly the problem. Thor - the Thor in his world - survived the fall, befriended mortals, started to learn the lessons Odin wished to teach him. It was almost encouraging to see.

His own scenes, however, were like that proverbial saying about pulling out teeth. He did his best to maintain his composure - sitting stiffly in his seat, unmoving and unmovable, as though someone had replaced him with ice stone - expression blank, eyes fixed on the screen, all the distress inside sealed away behind a layer of ice.

At least, he was doing well until his on-screen counterpart sent the Destroyer after his brother, and the dull sound of the impact of metal against his brother’s skull (I did this. I will do this.) lost him the rest of his stillness, sending him to his feet and carrying him out of the theater, then left him standing in the hall attempting to collect himself enough to form the words of a spell to send him away from here.

Needy knew first hand how much it sucked to have your life played out on a screen for the enjoyment of others. After all, Jennifer's Body may have had Jen's name in the title, but it was really about her, not Jennifer. Because of that movie there were thousands (at least) of people that had seen the hardest year of her life played out for them. They'd seen her deal with her friends getting killed, her having to kill her best friend in the world, her getting locked in an asylum, and the aftermath of her breaking out of that asylum and slaughtering the guys. She had no secrets from that year. Sure, there were things that she didn't really tell people, but it was easy to pick up the movie and find out that hey, when she says she was "locked up" it was actually in a mental institution. Things of that nature.

So while she understood what that aspect was like, she never had to deal with finding out what it was like to see things you hadn't even been through yet. Needy was pretty sure she had an idea of what it was like--hard, sucky, shouldn't ever happen to anyone ever--but she had no way of knowing for sure.

For most of the movie Needy had actually sort of kept a watch on Loki out of the corner of her eye, wanting to make sure he wasn't freaking too much. Really, she had tried to make it seem like she was paying attention to the movie or to the food-slash-drink she had with her, but most of her awareness had been turned towards her friend. Needy had already seen the movie anyway. Sure, he seemed to be trying to pull off a whole "This isn't bothering me" vibe and everything, but he was a bit too expressionless, a bit too stiff.

And then he was out of the seat and bolting from the theater. She couldn't blame him, really, it probably sucked to watch the repercussions of ordering a giant robot thingy to kill your brother, especially when you never made the order in the first place and you didn't actually hate him in real life. Part of her wanted to punch the projectionist simply because he left that scene in, as though he should have just known that there was someone in the audience that was not going to handle that very well. But the rest of her knew that was stupid, there was no way the projectionist couldn't know.

Besides. There was someone that probably needed her attention a bit more.

Loki wasn't even down the stairs yet before Needy had all the snacks set aside and was making her way out of the theater behind him. By the time she got out to the hallway he was already stopped and leaning against a wall, looking thoroughly freaked out. Frowning, she walked over and placed a hand on his arm. "Hey," she started, voice soft and filled with worry. "You gonna be okay?"

If Loki had been able to focus, he would have been gone before Needy had made it out of the theater - but he knew the risks of using certain spells while his energy was off, and teleportation was one that could have disastrous results. He had enough sense to ignore the tiny voice inside hissing like a frozen wind at the back of his mind that said it would be worth the risk - and if something does happen, well... at least you won’t be able to become that - because regardless of his current mood he had little desire to be dead.

Needy’s presence, and her progress towards him, was met with a quiet sigh of resignation; he was unlikely to be able to escape now. The hand on his arm and the clear concern in her tone when she spoke would keep him there as effectively as if she were capable of physically preventing him from leaving; disappearing now would only worry her further.

“I will be fine,” he responded, maybe lying, maybe speaking the truth - at this point he wasn’t certain which it was... but either way it would sound the same - even and calm tone betrayed only by the thread of a tremor in his hands - because there was no liar more skilled than Loki when he was trying hard enough - though he allowed for a bit of his uncertainty to show through in the thin twist of his lips that was meant to be a reassuringly wry smile, and in the way he cut his eyes away from her own. The liesmith was reluctant to lie, for a change.

In this case, lying would accomplish nothing.

He eyed the colorful carpet under their feet. “I did not expect it to be-” such a simple decision to make “- quite like that.” The images from the movie were just behind his eyes - Loki had a sharp memory, honed by years of memorizing spells and observing everything around him, using the knowledge he’d gleaned from others for pranks and mischief, for manipulating them into place like pawns, for his own entertainment. The single viewing of the film would stick with him, memory locking down and sealing it into place - this is what you will be, this is what you’ll become - replaying fragments of it back at him. He shifted one hand slightly, examined the skin for traces of blue.

“Perhaps this was an unwise decision.”

Loki was standing there telling her that he would be alright, and while his expression didn't exactly shout liar, the tremble that Needy could feel kinda gave it away. He wasn't alright, she could tell. People didn't tremble when they were, not outside of certain situations, at least. Plus there was the way he was eying the carpet, then his hand... yeah, it was kinda obvious to her that he wasn't alright. So Needy did the first thing that came to mind.

She let out a soft sigh as she stepped closer to him, then before he could say anything wrapped her arms around his middle and pressed her cheek against his chest in a tight and, hopefully, comforting hug. She would have gone for the around-the-neck type of hug, but things like that weren't exactly easy for Needy when it came to tall people. Not in public where flying up would be a bad idea, at least.

"We don't have to finish the movie if you don't want to," she said simply. "We could just head back to the complex or something. I'm cool with whatevs." Hell, as she quickly thought over how the rest of the movie went she started to think that maybe it wasn't the best idea for him to see it after all. His story never got any better in it, and then in the whole post-credits scene... Okay, so if they finished watching it? Needy would so not be telling him that there's a post-credits scene.

And then another thought hit her. Maybe it wasn't just seeing all this crazy that freaked him out. Maybe there was a little more to it. "You don't have to become that way, you know. You're here now. Things change here all the time."

Loki was not completely unaccustomed to such displays of affection - his mother was often quite affectionate, especially when she was aware that his mood left something to be desired. She would often come see him after he had been having a disagreement with Thor, during his earlier years. It was as if she knew if left to his own devices he would have concocted some elaborate scheme, some way to get back at his brother that would simply escalate the problem in the end. She would come in and talk quietly - not about the issue at hand, just small-talk, asking about his studies and his books and ask to see some spell he'd learned, and by the time she would leave he had usually forgotten to be upset.

But that was not quite the same - that was his mother (not by birth, perhaps, but regardless of that fact, he wasn’t able to think of her as anything other than Mother any more than Thor was his brother and Odin was his father) and this was Needy, his friend who did not need to offer comfort, had no duty to do so, but did it anyway because she wished to.

He hesitantly put a hand against her back, somewhat tentatively returning the embrace after a second, thinking about what she’d said - thinking about whether or not finishing the movie was a good idea. He hadn’t thought about it, when he rushed out - he’d simply needed space to breathe, space away from the sounds and sights of his disastrous future, had just planned on being as far away as possible.

On the one hand, seeing it to the end would give him a clearer picture of exactly who many people thought he was. It would help fit all the pieces into place, make everything make a little more sense.

On the other, he didn’t know if he could sit through it any longer.

Before he had come up with an answer for her, she was speaking again - "You don't have to become that way, you know. You're here now. Things change here all the time." - and his arms tightened just a little around her for a second, silent acknowledgement and appreciation for her words. He wanted to believe her - he wanted to think he had a choice in the matter, that becoming a monster was not something simply in his blood.

“I hope you are correct, my friend,” he responded quietly, bit back the more than anything, I hope you are right that tried to follow after. “I think it would be best to go, if that would be all right? I believe I’ve seen enough for tonight.”
