Cal had had another dream, worse than that it had been a memory, he wasn’t sure what was going on, that his brain was finally letting go of the stranglehold it had on his memories of Tumulus, all he knew was that it couldn’t be good, probably meant that his brain was coming apart at the seams. He remembered what had happened when Robin had tried to hypnotize him into remembering, and it hadn’t been good then either.
He figured that the only way to be sure was to try again. He had to open a gate when it wasn’t life or death. He had to open one when he was in full control of all his faculties. He’d mapped out the roof, he knew how many paces it was from side to side and he was going to try something short first, from behind the AC unit to the middle of the roof, ten or fifteen feet, three, maybe four strides. He perched himself on top of the AC unit, brow furrowing as he concentrated, he could feel where the gate would form, and he knew where he wanted it to go.
It started about two feet in front of him, just a small tear in reality, sparking grey at the edges and twisting against itself, twisting against his own hold, it wanted to go somewhere else, he could feel that much the same as he could feel the tightening against the back of his mind, the tension in his spine holding it still. Once it was big enough to step through he did, bracing himself for a moment before he did so. He dropped to his knees on the other side, sure that he'd felt his mind tear as he passed through, tyring to staunch a bleeding nose with his sleeve.
