Who Christopher and Adrian
Where Adrian's
When Late night
What Angst

Christopher couldn't stand it as he sat between his two brothers facing his a barrage of family members. The sympathetic looks and the whispers, and them all touching his hands, shoulders. Everybody was acting as if his wife was already dead, and Christopher could not stand it. Making a lousy, half-assed excuse, Christopher goes to the washroom. He hadn't told them yet about the price of getting Sally-Ann back, but he had already started to prepare. His parents thought he was going through a stage of grief, but that was not the reason why Christopher sold their summer cottage for a reason, and his best racing broom.

He faced himself in the mirror, looking a little worse for wear. Even through the other side of a door, he could still hear the hushed whispers, and then he was standing outside of another house. Christopher hadn't meant to apparate, but now he was here- Standing awkwardly, tired, and weary outside of his friend's house, Christopher knocked.

The look on Christopher's face pretty much said "Why the fuck did I come here?" as he stared at Adrian. The guy looked just as bad as Christopher, and he did have a wife to to get kidnapped (not one that Christopher had any knowledge of).

"Oh, same old," Christopher shrugged, hands in his pocket, looking casual except for the tightness of his shoulder, "You always answer the door holding your wand like a weapon?"

The look on Adrian's face echoed the look on Christopher's, and then he shrugged too. It wasn't like his old mate to just drop in like this, especially with Sally Anne...oh yeah. Just act casual.

Adrian blinked stupidly at his wand and then slipped it into his pocket. "I recently lost a kind-of relative to this whole kidnapping...thing." That probably didn't make a lick of sense. "I actually think I'm supposed to be with Alberto and the family right now. Not that I give a fuck."

He stepped from the door and motioned for his old friend to enter. "Want a beer or something? You look like shit."

"Oh, what a coincidence, so did I," was Christopher's eloquent reply as he passed by Adrian and stepped into his flat. He doesn't come here very often. Even though they were friends, and the term friend is used very loosely here, they never did the "come over to my place" thing. No tea-parties for them. "Yeah, I heard about that," referring to Adrian's kidnapped aunt- cousin- sister-in-law- something, "Sucks."

Christopher did not drink, hadn't drunk since grad, for a reason he did not want to elaborate. "Yeah sure," and made himself comfortable on the couch.

Now Adrian really stared. He was actually accepting a beer? But he grabbed two out of the cooler box, tapped the top with his wand and set one in front of the other wizard. Then Adrian sat down too.

"Right," said Adrian, now feeling completely foolish. "I...I didn't mean to sound so dismissive about the kidnappings. I'm sure...wait...who?" He stopped warily. Was he even supposed to know Sally Anne was missing? And if not, was it too late to recover what he'd already said?

Commence the awkward.

Christopher was deliberately being an ass. He does it when he's angry, or tired, or when he is with Adrian. A part of him thinks that he should be fearful for his wife's life, getting shit together, planning, breaking down doors and bodies. Not sitting here drinking beer.

"Sally-Ann," he said flatly, not really expecting a wave of sympathy from Adrian. In fact, he'd appreciate it if there was no sympathetic wave of any kind. Thank you very much.

Sympathy wouldn't get his wife back. Or even give him answers.

"Right. The paper," Adrian responded vaguely. He was already thinking about that time he'd seen Christopher almost beat a man to death with his bare hands. And that objection was exactly why he'd been punished by Rodolphus- for knowing the value and absolute reaction of Sally Anne's disappearance. Adrian might be a bad guy, but he isn't a complete idiot.

He stuck the beer bottle to his lips in an effort to waste away some time, stall, not say something incredibly stupid and incriminating.

"She'll be fine. She's a pureblood."

"They're all purebloods," Christopher replied, wetting the mouth of his beer bottle, "What makes her so special?" Although the likelihood of Sally-Ann getting seriously hurt was relatively low- and he hoped that she wouldn't do something that could herself into more trouble, like running her mouth- this being more of a ransom thing. Not that it was okay. It was nowhere near okay. If he was not at such a disadvantage, Christopher would do some expensive damage.

"You're talking like this is the end of the world," Adrian said, shaking his head. "Just pay the ransom and be done with it. You keep captives, or you don't get the galleons." He drank again. "I mean, you do have the gold, don't you?"

His bottles was midway to his lips when Christopher stopped, eyes staring blankly at Adrian. He didn't mention it. There was nothing about it in the papers. "How did you know that they're asking for ransoms?"

For a very long moment Adrian's mind was totally blank and his hand slowly inched its way towards his wand. Then something clicked and his brain started chugging once more.

"Alberto." He took a calming swig from his beer and then settled back into the cushions of his chair. "Fifty-thousand right? Not an easy sum, but hardly a drop in the lake to some folks."

There was a brief silence, heavy and bloated, as Christopher evaluated his friend. His face was suspiciously blank and he made no move to show the building tension in his shoulders. Nodding slightly he said, masking his guard with a casual air of relaxation, "Yeah. But we're not 'some folks.'"

"Hey, just out of curiosity, have you guys found anything?" Christopher prodded, placing his drink on the table, "You know anything?"

"Financial problems then?" Adrian's eyes narrowed ever so slightly. "Alberto saw in his ransom note that if he could not afford the 50,000 galleons there were 'other choices.' Do you have that option as well?"

"No," Adrian replied flatly. "As usual, the Aurors are handling all the finer details. I mean, rumors and partial truths slip through inevitably, but nothing I'd go on the record for. Except," and here Adrian lowered his voice conspiratorially, "Rodolphus Lestrange leads the movement and there's a witch that is both a Renegade and a Ministry employee of some power. So this is just like the Dark Lord all over again."

Adrian killed his beer and then placed it on a n end table. "But, as ever, I'll keep an attentive ear open."

Somewhere in the back of his mind, alarms were going off, although the situation was still far too vague for him to pinpoint exactly why was this conversation holding him out on the edge. "No," Christopher shook his head, he was not about to let out the fact that he was currently at a greater disadvantage than people think, "We're good."

Christopher shrugged nonchalantly, body language giving away nothing as he leaned forward slightly, "Yeah. Not really my thing, though." He couldn't even get through a summer of boy scouts as a child, let alone an evil version of it as an adult.

Nodding, Christopher picked up his drink again but did not bring it to his lips, "What about your family? I guess they're going to pay up?"
