Who: Severus Snape + Rodolphus Lestrange
When: Nighttime. >>;
Where: Spinner's End.

Few things bear the stamp of one's personality the way a house does, and Snape's was looking as dismal and dreary as ever. Although the atmosphere was unchanged, the house had undergone some small alterations, changes that only the house's most frequent occupant would notice. The tall bookshelves were punctured by dark holes where books had been removed but never returned; the shelves now stood clear of muggle authors. The empty and half-empty firewhiskey bottles that had become the house's most prominent decor in the past months were now absent, if only from sight. Chairs and tables that had been shifted and shoved and sometimes flung across the rooms had been rearranged, if not carefully, than at least consciously.
The house at Spinner's End had seldom suffered from prolonged states of filth by Snape's hand, but it had never boasted any sort of meticulous cleanliness, either. But there was good reason for the house's prepared state tonight. Rodolphus was coming. Maybe not in the next hour, or week, or month, but soon. It had been a blow to Snape's dignity to resort to rumors- the spreading of and the listening to- to get in touch with Rodolphus, but he had let a few choice words slip to the right people, and he was certain that his messages must have gotten through to Rodolphus by now.  He would show up. He had to.
Regardless of what Dumbledore thought, being Severus Snape still stood for something. Something that Rodolphus wouldn't dare ignore.
He hoped.

"And why would you want to know the purpose?" He returned coolly, his expression showing no flicker of any emotion or purpose.

Snape's eyes grew colder as the ghost of a smirk passed over his features. "Why else would I want to know the purpose? I want in, Rodolphus, but I'm not one to pursue a cause that I know nothing about. You have enough blind devotion. Let me show you conviction."

He blinked, unphased. "Why do you want in? We're hardly anything at the moment. What's your purpose."

It was unclear if Rodolphus really thought of The Renegades as being hardly anything at the moment, as, unknown to most, he had been dictating very carefully what the actions of the group were to be. In fact, they were much more capable of much much more than they had perhaps been doing.

"You may have high expectations, but I can see that what the Renegades are now is more than most rebel groups could ever hope to achieve. And I am not the only one to have noticed it." The smirk vanished just as suddenly as it had appeared. "Albus Dumbledore. He's already certain that no one else is pulling your strings, which is cause for concern. You have a reputation, Rodolphus, and Dumbledore will take your organization seriously before the ministry even decides that it is a threat. My purpose is to ensure that Albus Dumbledore won't be our undoing again."

Although Rodolphus was different than most Dark Lords, he had one thing in common: Flattery worked well.

...But he didn't show it. One thick eyebrow twitched, "So, you propose to play the double agent again?" He didn't seem particularly pleased.

"So Dumbledore is all up in arms? Interesting. I'm surprised, afterall, they've all been pureblood girls. I thought he threw his dice towards mudbloods and creatures."

A simple affirmation would have been a sufficient response to the question Rodolphus had asked, but Snape could not let the issue rest so easily.
"It's impossible to play any other part. Dumbledore's trust is an asset that I would dispose of only after it had served it's purpose to the fullest. And so long as I have his trust, I can't turn a blind eye to the insight it offers."
Snape's words were open to interpretation, but no level of scrutiny could wrestle any hints from his cold expression. To imply that his involvement in the Renegades was indispensable was insubordination that bordered on an outright challenge to Rodolphus's authority. Snape was sure that Rodolphus would realize this.
The question was how he would react to such a statement. The answer was sure to be a telling one...

"Is it so surprising? The self-righteous will adhere to any cause. Dumbledore doesn't care what he is defending, so long as he's the one orchestrating the defense."

Rodolphus' expression didn't change, except for one slight thing: His eyes darkened by just the slightest shade. "Yes, Dumbledore's insight, so important to you, so important to The Dark Lord. But, Severus, you should be asking, is it important to me? The plans of The Dark Lord are not in use here. If you want desperately to take part, then you should be asking me how *I* want *you* to *serve* me."

Snape's eyes didn't darken so much as dull. He lifted his hand from the arm of the chair, palm up, before letting it drop again. The gesture was too unconscious to either acknowledge or instigate any hostility.
"You have only to say the word, Rodolphus. You know that as well as I."

Good answer, Severus Snape. Neither hostile, nor passive to an extent that would make Rodolphus want to kill for no real reason.

"Is that so? Hm." He turned his face slightly, the sharp angles of his profile catching the dim light, "Good. Perhaps I'll take you up on the offer sometime."

Dark eyes fell back on the other man's face, "Too many are unwilling, which is why I had to punish them, you see." He was referring to the kidnappings now. "Tut."

At the mention of the kidnappings, the cold alertness returned to Snape's eyes, accompanied by a slight smirk. "One must do what is necessary."

"Yes." Rodolphus agreed, standing and dropping a heavy hand on Snape's shoulder in a form of a clap. "But you'll understand that I'm too far in to let in a new person on this project. Don't worry, you won't miss out on too much fun. That comes later." The ominous note resonated in the room.

This was all Snape would get from Rodolphus. Although he hadn't learned much about the kidnapping, he was one step closer in gaining trust. Maybe.

With a *pop* Rodolphus was gone.

Some length of time elapsed between the point when Rodolphus disapparated and the point when Snape ceased to survey his shoulder in mild disgust. When that point finally arrived, Snape slid his gaze toward the bottle of firewhiskey dangling loosely in his fingertips. This too he observed for a time before swinging to his lips and, quite suddenly and completely, emptying.
