What: Experiment time!
Where: An undisclosed location
When: Day 17 7:00am - close of day seventeen
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

Each character will awaken in a room with another character and will be missing their journals. Each will have their own very comfortable twin bed. The Room is comfortably accommodated and should the subject look into the closets of bureau they will find clothing appropriate to their sense of style and size. Each room has it's own bathroom complete with toilet, tub and shower. Each bathroom is stocked with products the character would be familiar with.

The doors to the five bedrooms all open into a large common area which includes a television (no cable; just a large collection of assorted movies and an X-Box with an assortment of games); a bookcase with various titles and genres; a large sectional sofa; a dining table; and a large kitchen. The Kitchen will have an induction cooktop stove; a large refrigerator; various appliances and copious amounts of fresh foods. The style of this room is contemporary but comfortable. The floors are carpeted and everything is modern.

Clearly, this room is intended to make the subjects comfortable. Conspicuously absent: Windows.

There is an area which is clearly a door; however, it has no handle from the inside. Over this door is a large blue sign "Departure Point." A sign on the door indicates the following.

"Thank you for your participation here at Vas Captio. This area is intended for your use and comfort. Please be mindful to be clean and courteous as this room will be occupied shortly after you leave. Further instructions as to your departure will be included as they become more final. Thank you for your patience."

Shannon had spent most of her day laying in the bed in her room, staring at the wall, the ceiling, or the inside of her closed eyelids. She couldn't sleep, didn't want to think, and couldn't pull herself out of bed. The guilt surrounding the deaths of those around her that she cared so much for was weighing on her, sinking her into a depression she hadn't felt in what seemed like ages. Boone had been the last time she'd felt so heavy and broken and even though it had only been three weeks ago, give or take, it felt like years.

When she finally ventured out of the bedroom, she saw the couch and plopped down on it. The fact that there were no windows in the bedroom was not made any better by the fact that there were also none in the main room. She curled up in the corner of the couch and hugged her knees. Would the feeling ever lift without something horrible happening to distract her?

Shouldn't have ever left Sam. Shouldn't have bothered Dean. Shouldn't have made friends or let things go past the buddy system relationship. I...shouldn't have let myself care about anyone here... she thought, looking down and staring at nothing in particular.

While the day had been easy enough for them (even if it did feel a bit like they were stuck on Big Brother), Ianto was certain that the others, still in the town, more than likely believed that something terrible was happening to them. More than anything, he wanted to get back and reassure several people. Wandering around the odd set of rooms, Ianto was led to believe that Shannon might want the same. She looked, well, disheartened.

Carefully, he sat down next to her and gently bumped her shoulder. "Penny for your thoughts?" he asked quietly.

Someone sat down beside Shannon, she knew, because she could feel the weight shifting on the couch, and she continued to stare down at nothing, face drawn and expression blank. She felt the bump against her shoulder and then heard Ianto's voice. Had it been probably anyone other than Ianto, Sam, maybe Jack or the man formerly known as the Doctor, Shannon would've ignored them. In this case, she looked up at him with no change in her expression.

Ianto wanted to know what she was thinking. Or at least, he thought he wanted to know. Shannon was too drained to bother coming up with a lie for him and somehow, she thought he'd be able to tell if she was lying, anyway. "People are dying," she replied in a voice hoarse and raspy from lack of use for so many hours. "Because they were close to me."

Then, Shannon paused and looked away from him again. "All I wanted was to be alone and I woke up here, stuck in a smaller place than the museum with even more people. Apparently, it was too much to ask for me to be able to put some distance between myself and the people I care too much about to watch die," she added in a dull voice. There was another pause and then she spoke again, off topic this time. "I smell the food...and I have no appetite in spite of the fact that I haven't had an actual meal in months. I just want to be back in the empty church with my sins and thoughts. People would be safer that way. I'm like a curse," she mumbled.

Oh, Shannon.

Ianto presumed and slipped an arm around her, settling himself so that they were close. So that they were sharing a bit of warmth. Because it seemed like she needed it badly. For her sake, Ianto wished he could wring the necks of the people running this thing. Shannon was breaking and he wasn't entirely sure what to do.

"No," he murmured and tugged her a bit closer. "That's not why. You're not a curse, you're a joy to know. It's not because you cared for those people. It's because the people running this are sick bastards. Let me get you some tea or something. Let me take care of you a little. Sounds like you need it." Ianto stroked a little of Shannon's hair out of her face and made a mental note to talk to Jack about stealing Shannon away for another night of romping.

Ianto's warmth gave Shannon some small comfort, but she still felt numb. Maybe she even felt a little empty all things considered. But she settled against him and let him try to comfort her. It made her feel a little like a traitor for taking Ianto's consoling when she'd denied Sam the chance to even try.

"It started before here. It's not this place; it's me," she insisted in the same quiet and ragged voice. "It's okay, thanks anyway, Ianto," she politely declined the offer for tea. "I appreciate the offer though."

"I refuse to believe that it's you," he insisted and tightened his arms a bit when she declined the tea. The ragged edge in her voice cut him deeply and he swore silently at himself for not catching this sooner. "It can't be you. You're not ... some angel of death. You're Shannon who elbows me in the stomach when you sleep and jogs with me."

Ianto bent his head a little and tried to shield her from the others in the rooms. If she didn't want it, Ianto'd do his best to keep anyone else from bothering her.

Shannon rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. His words were helping, even if she didn't agree with him. She was Shannon who elbowed him in the stomach when she slept and Shannon who jogged with him...and Shannon, curse to those she loved. Ianto could never understand; he hadn't had to lose so many people in so little time. At least, not that she knew. It wasn't any of her business, so she wasn't going to ask, of course. "Thanks Ianto," she whispered against his neck as he shielded her away from the others in the room.

"It's weird to have people here be so nice to me," she admitted quietly. "I think that's why it's hurting so much. You and Sam are the only ones consistently nice to me who haven't died yet. Even Jack died in the earthquake. Domeki, Kaylee, Bob, Anders..." her voice trailed off. Jay's missing, Watanuki's off the map...and on, and on, and on, she thought but did not say.

Slowly, she looked up at him. "Do you think it's a sign?" she asked. "Do you think it's my turn soon? Is that why? I'm supposed to watch everybody I care about die and then I go last? Because I can't do it anymore, Ianto; I can't watch anyone else die..."

She said things like this so easily, like it was an odd thing for people to like her and be nice to her. That was a disturbing concept to Ianto, for all that he understood it completely. He had been in a place like that not too long ago. Invisible and drowning inside.

"No," he said softly, "it's not a sign. It's just bad luck. Jack will always come back. Always. And I don't plan on dying just yet. I'm getting out of here, you're coming with me." The others...? Ianto felt a bit of a pang at the names and stroked through Shannon's hair a bit longer.

For a few moments, Shannon just sat there in Ianto's arms, hiding her face against his shoulder and she thought. Wondered to herself, actually, if maybe they were chosen for some reason. She wondered if they had been hand-picked to avoid the next catastrophe. Maybe there had been people in a room like this during the earthquake and she just hadn't known it. Maybe this time, everyone out there was meant to die and the ones stuck in the bunker were meant to live, if even for only a little bit longer.

Shannon was inclined to trust Ianto and she so badly wanted to believe him when he said that he was getting out and he was taking her with him. But, no matter how badly she wanted to be able to take his word for it, Shannon couldn't make herself really and truly believe that Ianto would be able to do it. She sniffled against him and closed her eyes to keep the tears from falling as they filled her eyes.

No. They'd get out when the people who'd put them there were good and damn ready to let them out. That was how things worked here, she thought, and she'd finally resigned herself to the possibility that no matter how hard they tried, no one was going to find a way to get everyone out. She was going to die here, and probably alone in spite of the friends she'd made. It was not a comforting thought and Shannon huddled closer still to Ianto as it crossed her mind.

The TV was large. The couch was comfortable. And there was the coolest Nintendo that he'd ever seen hooked up to that large television. It didn't have any of the normal games, though.. but really? It didn't matter. New games were welcome, and Remy had settled down after turning on the black box with the circle, and grabbing his controller. The other controller was tossed into the other man's lap. Because, of course he'd dragged Church into this. Remy didn't play games alone! Games were only fun if someone else played with you. And when the xBox turned on and the music came up, the Cajun whistled low.

The graphics were amazing, it was like it was real-life. That was just about the coolest thing he'd ever seen.. and the music that came with the game was nice. Halo 3, huh? Interesting. Was it about angels? Soon, the game was starting up, and Remy took a second to get used to the controller before turning his person to face the other person. Wow. "You an' alien, homme." And Remy LeBeau? Master Chief, of course!

Take that, Spartan.

When the remote fell into his lap, Church took a moment to turn it over before he glanced over at Remy and followed suit after him, holding down the button in the middle to turn it on before leaning back into the couch and turning blue eyes up to the large television screen in front of them. He’d used battle simulators before but they had been much more advanced than any of this.. he hadn’t ever used anything as primate that would use a remote that only used your fingers, like this, but he was sure that he could adjust. He couldn’t ever remember playing a video game in his life, so as they waited for the game to start up he glanced over to Gambit and rubbed his thumbs over the joysticks on the controller.

“What are we doing with this?” All you had to do was tell him he was going to be killing things, and he’d be happy to play, Gambit… but he might not get the chance to explain it, because the game was starting up and blue eyes turned back to the screen, falling onto the dark green armored character that had turned to face his on the right side of the screen, and his brows lifted before he dropped the controller and got to his feet, so that it tumbled forward out of his lap and landed on the carpeted floor.

“Did they just say Master Chief?” Demanded of the Cajun, though he didn’t look away from the television. Instead, he stepped forward to stand just in front of it, narrowing his eyes as he peered in at the character. That armor, while he couldn’t remember it in as advanced of a stage due to his memory loss, was sparking something in his mind and he could picture himself, as well as everyone else in his squad, suited up in that exact same thing. It’d triggered a memory, and Church definitely knew who Master Chief was…

“The fuck is this? Some kind of joke?”

"Non, homme. S' uh game. Y' move 'de buttons on 'de con'rol pa', an' you made t'in's happen. See?" He moved the buttons so that the Master Chief jumped, then he turned his gun onto the Arbiter and fired a few times to bring his shields down. WOW. The controller vibrated.

Oh. That was great.

Remy cleared his throat.

"C'mon an' si' down. Jus' uh game." He insisted again, setting the controller aside reluctantly and standing up as well, stretching his legs a little bit as he did, and watching the taller man with interest. He was so tall. Remy, of course, had seen people that tall, but it wasn't exactly normal, and he was having a bit of trouble really accepting that he was 'normal'.

When Master Chief jumped up and then shot the alien who was, apparently, Church’s character, the Spartan glanced down at the remote on the floor as it vibrated, before turning blue eyes back to the screen. “A game?” Repeated, brow furrowing in curious discontent. A video game? They’d turned the Spartans into a video simulation made with the purpose of only entertainment?

Really?

That was so awesome.

“Give me your controller.” Demanded as he turned to face Remy again, holding a hand out expectantly. Really, he could look quite a bit intimidating to most people, but Remy had a reason to be confident – he’d have more of a reason to be confident if he knew that Church had metal grafted to his bones, but the Spartan had no reason to disclose that information. He didn’t have a reason to disclose anything about himself to any of the people here… though if they knew about Spartans and Master Chief…

“Come on, give it to me. If we’re playing, I’m playing as Master Chief.”

"Wha'? Non, don' wanna be 'de alien." Wait. He paused and thought for a second, looking down at the controller that had vibrated. He wasn't sure that his controller vibrated. And really, was being an alien that bad?

That controller vibrated.

"D'accord." The controller in his hand was passed over and he bent down to snatch up the one on the floor and plopped unceremoniously onto the couch, stretching long legs out as he leaned back with a sigh. Oh yeah. He could get used to this. Definitely. "C'mon, ain' go' all 'de time in 'de worl', homme. Gonna play 'de fuck outta 'dis game. 'Den we gonna go t'rough 'dose movies, an' fin' anyt'in' wit' sex in i', an' we gonna turn i' on." Yes, Church. Those were his plans. Soft core porn and video games. Did you have a problem with it? Speak now or forever hold your peace.

When the Cajun relinquished the controller, Church took it and stepped back so he could settle back down into the couch, glancing sidelong at Remy again, blue eyes lingering on the odd black and red ones across from him. "Someone do something to your eyes?" Asked after a moment, because the only reason Church could think of for eyes like that was contacts, or someone had injected something into them, or something -- there were lots of medical possibilities. He wasn't closed off to the things that medical experiments could do to someone, he'd experienced that first hand.

Sex. Movies and video games and sex? Well. He wasn't going to oppose to that! Church rolled his shoulders back and got more comfortable on the couch, thumbing the controls to get a feel for the game before he turned and shot the Elite in the head, unloading the clip so the alien would die. That made Church laugh, and he lifted an arm to elbow Remy in the side.

"I win."

When asked about his eyes, Remy lifted his eyebrows but just rolled his shoulders back in the lazy man's version of a shrug. "Non, born 'dis way. Jus' 'de way I look." The grin was flashed over to the other man and he lifted his eyebrows some, then looked forward again at the large television. Wait-- what? Oh, his controller was vibrating again. He resisted the urge to lay it in his lap. But he was smirking and nudging the other man back and pulling sock-covered feet up onto the couch, indian-style.

"Don' t'ink we 'posed t' kill each ot'er, homme. We gotta kill 'de t'in's out 'dere." He held up the Halo 3 box and waggled it, flashing the green rectangle at him. "Say kill 'de covonan'." Both eyebrows lifted and he tossed the box at Church, before grinning and looking back at the screen, where he had respawned, and he began running forward, hopping up. Oh, this was fun!

Quietly, she moved into the room nearby and saw some strange contraption and the two men from earlier playing with it. Being that she had no idea what it was, she moved to sit down near Church, even though she didn't say anything. Watching Remy sit strangely, she moved to mimic him and sit the way he did on the floor.

Granted, she could have set in a chair or something but she didn't.

"..What..is this?" She tilted her head.

The door didn't seem to bother anyone else, but it nagged at Ianto through most of the morning. After waiting to see if anything happened (aside from Remy's cooking, nothing had happened), Ianto stepped up to the door and began to run his fingers over it. He poked and prodded, hoping to find hinges or something, though he knew it was never ever that easy around here. He poked at the sign, trying to pry it up to see if there was anything underneathe. They were labrats, after all, and this was their maze. The door probably wasn't a door, he reasoned, but the next step in the maze. Maybe it was time to turn the corner in the corridor and step further into the experiment.

For all that he'd like to just blow it all up. If he could, he would have, even if it cost him his life. Just to make certain everyone else was safe and free and that this would never happen again. But, still, nothing was ever easy nor simple, here.
