Each character will awaken in a room with another character and will be missing their journals. Each will have their own very comfortable twin bed. The Room is comfortably accommodated and should the subject look into the closets of bureau they will find clothing appropriate to their sense of style and size. Each room has it's own bathroom complete with toilet, tub and shower. Each bathroom is stocked with products the character would be familiar with.

The doors to the five bedrooms all open into a large common area which includes a television (no cable; just a large collection of assorted movies and an X-Box with an assortment of games); a bookcase with various titles and genres; a large sectional sofa; a dining table; and a large kitchen. The Kitchen will have an induction cooktop stove; a large refrigerator; various appliances and copious amounts of fresh foods. The style of this room is contemporary but comfortable. The floors are carpeted and everything is modern.

Clearly, this room is intended to make the subjects comfortable. Conspicuously absent: Windows.

There is an area which is clearly a door; however, it has no handle from the inside. Over this door is a large blue sign "Departure Point." A sign on the door indicates the following.

"Thank you for your participation here at Vas Captio. This area is intended for your use and comfort. Please be mindful to be clean and courteous as this room will be occupied shortly after you leave. Further instructions as to your departure will be included as they become more final. Thank you for your patience."

Someone sat down beside Shannon, she knew, because she could feel the weight shifting on the couch, and she continued to stare down at nothing, face drawn and expression blank. She felt the bump against her shoulder and then heard Ianto's voice. Had it been probably anyone other than Ianto, Sam, maybe Jack or the man formerly known as the Doctor, Shannon would've ignored them. In this case, she looked up at him with no change in her expression.

Ianto wanted to know what she was thinking. Or at least, he thought he wanted to know. Shannon was too drained to bother coming up with a lie for him and somehow, she thought he'd be able to tell if she was lying, anyway. "People are dying," she replied in a voice hoarse and raspy from lack of use for so many hours. "Because they were close to me."

Then, Shannon paused and looked away from him again. "All I wanted was to be alone and I woke up here, stuck in a smaller place than the museum with even more people. Apparently, it was too much to ask for me to be able to put some distance between myself and the people I care too much about to watch die," she added in a dull voice. There was another pause and then she spoke again, off topic this time. "I smell the food...and I have no appetite in spite of the fact that I haven't had an actual meal in months. I just want to be back in the empty church with my sins and thoughts. People would be safer that way. I'm like a curse," she mumbled.

Oh, Shannon.

Ianto presumed and slipped an arm around her, settling himself so that they were close. So that they were sharing a bit of warmth. Because it seemed like she needed it badly. For her sake, Ianto wished he could wring the necks of the people running this thing. Shannon was breaking and he wasn't entirely sure what to do.

"No," he murmured and tugged her a bit closer. "That's not why. You're not a curse, you're a joy to know. It's not because you cared for those people. It's because the people running this are sick bastards. Let me get you some tea or something. Let me take care of you a little. Sounds like you need it." Ianto stroked a little of Shannon's hair out of her face and made a mental note to talk to Jack about stealing Shannon away for another night of romping.

Ianto's warmth gave Shannon some small comfort, but she still felt numb. Maybe she even felt a little empty all things considered. But she settled against him and let him try to comfort her. It made her feel a little like a traitor for taking Ianto's consoling when she'd denied Sam the chance to even try.

"It started before here. It's not this place; it's me," she insisted in the same quiet and ragged voice. "It's okay, thanks anyway, Ianto," she politely declined the offer for tea. "I appreciate the offer though."

"I refuse to believe that it's you," he insisted and tightened his arms a bit when she declined the tea. The ragged edge in her voice cut him deeply and he swore silently at himself for not catching this sooner. "It can't be you. You're not ... some angel of death. You're Shannon who elbows me in the stomach when you sleep and jogs with me."

Ianto bent his head a little and tried to shield her from the others in the rooms. If she didn't want it, Ianto'd do his best to keep anyone else from bothering her.

Shannon rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. His words were helping, even if she didn't agree with him. She was Shannon who elbowed him in the stomach when she slept and Shannon who jogged with him...and Shannon, curse to those she loved. Ianto could never understand; he hadn't had to lose so many people in so little time. At least, not that she knew. It wasn't any of her business, so she wasn't going to ask, of course. "Thanks Ianto," she whispered against his neck as he shielded her away from the others in the room.

"It's weird to have people here be so nice to me," she admitted quietly. "I think that's why it's hurting so much. You and Sam are the only ones consistently nice to me who haven't died yet. Even Jack died in the earthquake. Domeki, Kaylee, Bob, Anders..." her voice trailed off. Jay's missing, Watanuki's off the map...and on, and on, and on, she thought but did not say.

Slowly, she looked up at him. "Do you think it's a sign?" she asked. "Do you think it's my turn soon? Is that why? I'm supposed to watch everybody I care about die and then I go last? Because I can't do it anymore, Ianto; I can't watch anyone else die..."

She said things like this so easily, like it was an odd thing for people to like her and be nice to her. That was a disturbing concept to Ianto, for all that he understood it completely. He had been in a place like that not too long ago. Invisible and drowning inside.

"No," he said softly, "it's not a sign. It's just bad luck. Jack will always come back. Always. And I don't plan on dying just yet. I'm getting out of here, you're coming with me." The others...? Ianto felt a bit of a pang at the names and stroked through Shannon's hair a bit longer.

For a few moments, Shannon just sat there in Ianto's arms, hiding her face against his shoulder and she thought. Wondered to herself, actually, if maybe they were chosen for some reason. She wondered if they had been hand-picked to avoid the next catastrophe. Maybe there had been people in a room like this during the earthquake and she just hadn't known it. Maybe this time, everyone out there was meant to die and the ones stuck in the bunker were meant to live, if even for only a little bit longer.

Shannon was inclined to trust Ianto and she so badly wanted to believe him when he said that he was getting out and he was taking her with him. But, no matter how badly she wanted to be able to take his word for it, Shannon couldn't make herself really and truly believe that Ianto would be able to do it. She sniffled against him and closed her eyes to keep the tears from falling as they filled her eyes.

No. They'd get out when the people who'd put them there were good and damn ready to let them out. That was how things worked here, she thought, and she'd finally resigned herself to the possibility that no matter how hard they tried, no one was going to find a way to get everyone out. She was going to die here, and probably alone in spite of the friends she'd made. It was not a comforting thought and Shannon huddled closer still to Ianto as it crossed her mind.
