Who: Elliot Reid and Lexie Grey
What: Girl talk.
When: Mid-Morning
Where: The Gym, Lexie's room
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Active

Taking a warm, if not exactly hot, shower after the previous three days had felt so good that she almost didn't mind the fact that there were no walls or doors in the gym shower. Still, the possibility tht someone could walk in at any moment cut the shower shorter than it might have been otherwise. She'd scrubbed her face and body clean with the soap she'd borrowed from Lexie, marvelling at the restored smoothness of her knees and the lack of a puncture wound to her side. By the time she'd washed her hair and had wrapped the bright yellow shirt she'd been wearing for the last day around it to soak up some of the water Elliot's spirits were pretty high.

She quickly dressed, putting back on the clothes she'd arrived in though she couldn't make herself slip back into the heels that had become the bane of her existance over the last two days. The gym floor was cool under her bare feet as she picked up Lexie's shampoo and soap and headed back to the room she'd first found the doctor in.

She knocked lightly, reaching up to steady the bright yellow turban that was still soaking up the excess water from her hair. "Lexie? Are you there?"

There had been a few things Lexie needed to take care of. First, she had to get changed into the jeans and sweatshirt she'd taken from the Thrift Shop so many days ago. The Jeans, thin and probably made for summer wear had already started to fray at the heels where she'd constantly been walking on them. They were, apparently, made for some sort of giant because while the waist was correct the legs seemed more suited for someone who stood about 6'1".

Her muddy scrubs laid heaped in a corner, the amount of blackened brown outweighing the blue at this point. She had sneakers, but they, too were black with mud, so Lexie currently stood in her socks. Who knew those tube socks could some in handy?

surveying the floor she came to realize just how much mud she'd tracked in with her following her expedition out of the gym. That was a lot of mud that streaked across the white tile and showed exactly what she'd done when she'd got inside. She'd walked in, jumped around a little, stood in front of her bed, taken up her journal and thenundressed, wrapping in a towel before skitting off down the hall to the showers.

Back in her room with her jeans and clean albeit still wet hair Lexie was staring at the floor with a slight mark of amusement. It was like standing in the rain, if the worst she had to do was clean up some mud, perhaps it all wasn't so bad after all.

There was a light knock at her door and Lexie pulled it open with a grin to see Elliot standing there.

"Told you I left you some hot water," she smiled stepping back. "Watch the mud."

Lexie's room was small, but it was hers. The shelves back up again had been stripped of any contents and she was currently plotting on how to take them down. Like hell if this place was going to have another earthquake was she going to have another shelf fall on her. She was lucky that she hadn't craceked her head open on the damned thing.

"Welcome to my no-longer-deathtrap," she quipped. Lexie had done her best to make it homey - not because she actually wanted to stay in her hole forever; but, because that's what she did, nest. There were couch cushions atop one of the oceanic cots and a couple of blankets that were actually turned back neatly. On the window sill there was a dried handful of yellow flowers shoved into a water bottle. One of the shelves had a small organized supply of food and water. She'd even scored a folding chair out of one of the closets which she'd dressed up with a sheet from the thrift shop.

Lexie plopped down on the cot in the far corner, pulling her feet up to sit indian-style. "So, I'm guessing you're all patched up too, right?"

Elliot returned Lexie's smile and then glanced down frowning at the mud streaked across the floor. She raised an eyebrow at the circle of footprints that had been made by dancing. "Glad to have your room back?" She guessed, looking back up at Lexie.

Except for the mud, the room had a sweet, homey feel that made Elliot have to fight the urge to as Lexie if she could live there with her. Not only was it a ridiculous request given the size of the room and the single cot, but she refused to live in a closet even if things were desperate.

"I like what you've done with the place," Elliot said, with a smile. She pointed towards the flowers, her face softening. "That is adorable and this..." She said, moving to the covered chair. She sat down on it carefully, her eyes traveling up to the shelves above them.

"So this is what it looks like, pre-earthquake," she said with a nod. "It's so cute."

She raised her eyebrows at Lexie's question and nodded, her hand traveling to her side. "Don't ask me how," she said slowly. "I don't know if I want to know, but yeah, I'm all healed. I think everyone is." She paused, shaking her head slightly. "Lexie, how is that even possible?"

"Yeah," she said with a hint of laughter in her word. Was it weird to have back a room you could have died in? Lexie didn't care; it was her space and she'd worked hard to make it her space. She felt safe and welcome and peaceful in it; again, despite having the possibility of death a few days ago.

Lexie was not above living in her little hole in the wall. Not at all. In fact, she liked it. It was hers. It wasn't too big, and it wasn't too small, and it was close to work. Oh, yeah, and there weren't any roaches. That was a plus. It was a place to retreat to. So, to see Elliot looking around and appreciating her handiwork, Lexie felt an intense swell of pride.

"Thanks," she said, tossing her journal onto the floor as she settled in to get more comfortable.

When Elliot asked how something like this was even possible, Lexie shrugged. She didn't have a clue. It didn't make any sense at all. "I have no idea; though, I wish whoever did it would share their secret, we could save a lot of lives..." Her face darkened a little. So far, all the people who had died did so in circumstances that were catastrophic - where no medical help could save them. She feared the day when maybe someone did die under her care here. Or under anyone else's for that matter.

"I never got to thank you for helping me out of here..." She dropped her smile a second for a look of sincerity. "I'm going to take down the shelves, so you don't have to worry about a repeat performance."

Elliot nodded when Lexie said that she wished they could save lives with the knowledge to magically heal people. If only being a doctor was that easy. "I can't say I'm not relieved," Elliot admitted. "Having to work in those conditions was a nightmare. No ice, no monitoring systems, really no help at all..." She shook her head. "Half the time I just wanted to sit down and cry."

Elliot looked slightly embarrassed at Lexie's gratitude. She waved it off, looking up at the shelves. "That's probably a good idea," she said with a nod and thoughtful purse of the lips. She looked back down at Lexie, her face growing serious. "And don't worry about it. You would've done the same for me."

She cleared her throat and shifted in her chair. "So," she said, clasping her hands in front of her. "We've just survived a natural disaster and have been magically healed. What do we do now?"

"It was pretty bad," Lexie relented, shaking her head. She wasn't sure what was worse: working those conditions or not being able to do everything she wanted to. House had told her to go take up residence until she had two fully functional hands, and she did. It was demoralizing. Shaking her head she pushed the thought far away into the back of her mind. She didn't want to keep that sort of thing up for too long, otherwise she'll just wind up all miserable again.

Lexie smiled and nodded slowly as Elliot dismissed her thanks. She was used to it, not many people were good at being thanked, Lexie included.

"I'd say we'd go to Disney World, but that doesn't seem like a possibility," Lexie smiled. "I guess people are looking for ways out, though, I don't know how useful I'd be at that..." Lexie shrugged. She was a doctor not an engineer or a scientist or a mathematician. "Too bad there isn't any really good coffee... Or maybe a cup of soup? Anything warm and wonderful. Like Macaroni and cheese..." Can you tell that Lexie Grey eats when stressed?

Elliot laughed when Lexie said they should go to Disney World. "Probably not," she agreed. Elliot sighed when Lexie said she wished there was good coffee. "I'd kill for some good coffee," Elliot said. "Or Mac 'N Cheese."

Elliot started thinking about how much she took her apartment back home for granted and then her thoughts shifted to her roommate, JD and her friends. Were they looking for her? Worried about her? Or had JD and Turk put up a disco ball in her room and started calling it the VIP lounge.

"At least the people here seem okay," Elliot said. She hadn't met anyone obsessed with disco balls or their best friend yet. "I mean everyone was in pain, but they were still nice." She smiled, thinking about her flirting with Dean. "And some were really nice looking too."

"I'm doing with Mac n' Cheese. I haven't been able to drink coffee since I OD'd during a rotation in the pit three weeks ago." Lexie shuddered a little, a headache threatening a the border of her forehead and scalp at the mere thought of drinking coffee again.

She watched as Elliot got a little more thoughtful, her own brain sort of turning to thoughts back at Seattle Grace. What was life like back in the pit right now? Had anyone noticed she hadn't come out of the Observation Lounge? Did they care?

"Yeah, they do," she smiled. People here did seem OK. They seemed real, too. Sure, there were some odd ones, but mostly they seemed just like anyone she might meet back home.

Girl talk. It had shifted to girl talk. "I know, right?" She asked in response to the question about the good looking ones. "Every single last one of them, good looking. It's like eye-candy. Maybe this disaster of a place thinks we'll be more OK with it if we have pretty things to stare at?"

"I know!" Elliot said, leaning forward and lowering her voice conspiratorially, despite the fact that they were the only two in the room. "Well, I don't know if I'm OK with it, but it doesn't hurt," she said, raising her eyebrows and grinning.

"I mean, I know 'Hi, I'm Elliot and I'm going to wrap your broken hands' isn't exactly the best ice breaker, but I've said worse." She paused. "I mean, heard worse."

She shook her head. "Anyway, it's a nice distraction at least."

Lexie reflexively reached up to cover her mouth as she giggled, as if her laughter was something that ought to be hidden away. "Don't hurt at all," her expression mimicking Elliot's.

"Oh gosh," Lexie laughed, knowing exactly what she meant. She also knew exactly who she meant and smiled conspiratorily. "Dean's a wicked flirt anyway," and he was. Really he was. Lexie had honest money that Dean would flirt with anything that moved. "Hi, I'm Lexie, if you could just drop trou while I sew up your leg, that' be great. Maybe later we can go out for slimfast?" Lexie rolled her eyes and shook her head as she laughed.

Elliot's smile widened when Lexie laughed. She had missed this kind of talk. She felt a sudden pang of lonliness at the thought of missing her daily gossip fix with Carla, but her smile only faltered momentarily.

Elliot felt her face warm as Lexie named Dean. Obviously she knew exactly who she was talking about. "He's gorgeous, isn't he?" She asked, thinking about his eyes and jaw and mouth. "Sometimes, when I look in his eyes, I think I could just get lost there."

Elliot sighed and looked at Lexie, giving a small laugh. "I don't think Andy minded." Her smile turned teasing. "Unless you mean Dr. House, in which case he is really good looking for an older man. You know, until he opens his mouth."

Lexie missed it, too. She didn't realize how much she'd missed it. Really, when it came down to it, she missed George. Sure, she could take or leave most of the other interns; but, George? George she really missed. Even if her thoughts toward him were still a bit raw and the way she felt about him still a bit on the uncomfortable side; she she treasured his friendship.

Was Elliot blushing? Really? Lexie offered her a conspiratorial smile, blushing as she looked at her own socks. "I know!" She said with a girlish giggle before looking up. Did she really just giggle? Seriously?

"He's a good one, Andy. A real keeper." In the scheme of things while Andy may not be as handsome as those Winchesters, there was just something so much more down to earth about him. It made Lexie smile just thinking about it. Though, that smile was cut off as soon as she started thinking of Doctor House. "He's such a crab. How do people go through life like that, anyway?"

Elliot heard Lexie's giggle and then matched it with one of her own. Amazing. Amazing how they could be sitting here in the wake of an Earthquake and she felt like they were sixteen years old and about to play Truth or Dare or something like that. Her giggle intensified at the absurdity of that thought and she couldn't help but feel a wave of gratefulness at Lexie for enabling her to laugh after the horrible things they'd been through.

"Yeah," Elliot said, with a smile and a nod. "He's a good guy. He really came through for Kim when everything happened. Kind of heroic if you ask me." She shut her eyes, embarrassment warming her face. "I feel kind of bad for calling him a wino when I first got here."

She shook her head at Lexie's comment regarding Dr. House. "You'd be surprised. I've got two doctors at Sacred Heart who could be long lost brothers of his. At least I can't be shocked by it the way I might have when I was an intern." She leaned back in her chair. "I've decided people only act like that if they're incredibly insecure or just a huge jerk. Or both, which is just scary."

It was amazing because yesterday she'd broken to bits and had to be comforted by Andy. She knew Andy would never mention it again, and that was a comfort; but, it still happened. She'd still felt the lowest she ever had in life. Even lower than when Mom died. She felt useless and incapable then. Now? Now that all had slipped back into the recesses of her mind, missing but not quite forgotten.

"He does seem like a great guy, right?" She paused thinking more about Andy. He knew what to say to make her feel better. And it wasn't just that whole 'forget about it a little while,' sort of better feeling that Dean managed. No, Andy centered her. He'd made her feel alright. He'd made her feel safe. Lexie realized that she'd stopped her giggling a moment, looking at the floor with a blush. Shake it off, Grey, she thought, running her hand down her face.

"Two? Gosh, we don't even have one at Seattle Grace. I mean, Yang is hearless and Baily can be pretty rough; but mean like him? Not quite." She was back in Seattle Grace then. Did this make Elliot her George, at least in the sense that George was her really good friend she could talk to about anything, not in the sense that she had loved George.

"I think in his case it's both," she smiled conspiratorially.

"Definitely," Elliot said, still thinking about how judgmental she'd been when she first got here. It was shaming really, how wrong she'd been. Then again this place didn't make any sense. Maybe she was being too hard on herself. In the real world she could've trusted things and maybe people to be what they seemed, but not here. Everything was broken here, the buildings, the heroes, everything.

She sighed, trying to push back the sudden influx of negative thoughts. She focused her attention on Lexie and was suprised to see some color in her cheeks. Was that because of the giggling or because of Andy? Elliot, tilted her head to the side slightly to study Lexie her mouth slightly open as she thought whether or not she should ask.

Then Lexie moved onto Dr. House and she let the topic slide momentarily. Elliot leaned forward. "Did you cry? I mean, at the beginning? Did it ever get so hard that you thought being a doctor wasn't for you?"

Elliot gave Lexie a small grin. "I don't think you're wrong."

"The doctoring part? No, that wasn't really the hard part. The hard part seems to be my teachers. Yang doesn't want to teach, she's too busy trying to land herself on the fast track in Cardio land that she doesn't seem to think her interns need their resident..." Lexie shrugged. Seattle Grace was such a soap opera she opted against going in to everything with Meredith or George. No, that didn't need saying. No, learning the procedures and the names and everything, that was the easy part. The hard part for Lexie sometimes seemed to be navigating the politics and personalities of her coworkers.

In a weird way Lexie wasn't looking forward to going back. She'd had an odd bit of autonomy here - and while she hadn't needed to perform a single surgery, she felt like she was in charge of her own destiny. Like she could really be a real doctor.

"Though, House did make me cry... I'll never give him the satisfaction of knowing, but he did. He's such a jerk sometimes." Lexie rolled her eyes. "At least people like Andy, Sam and Dean make up for it, you know? The jerks of the world, I mean."

Elliot made a disgusted sound and leaned forward. "Don't even get me started on teachers. Dr. Cox is so freaking negative! If he's not trying to insult you he's telling you that we're only delaying the inevitable by treating half our patients. The majority of the ones we see in internal medicine will be back again and again and again and again until they die." Elliot stopped, a look of horror coloring her face. "Oh, God. Now I sound like him."

She sighed and shook her head. "The thing is though, he doesn't believe it. He's a jerk, but he tries to save as many people as he can. I think he's just so jaded and disillusioned that he can't help but push it on the rest of us. Maybe his way of helping is not helping, or something. I don't know. I used to get so frustrated because he obviously favored my friend JD...who is a huge suck up, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I'm a good doctor and I got there on my own. He taught me how to stand on my own two feet and I guess I'll always be grateful for that."

Elliot sighed, her eyes moving towards the light coming through the small window. Her gaze quickly moved back to Lexie when she said Dr. House had made her cry. "He did? What did he do?" She nodded. "That's the spirit. Never let them know." She smiled at the mention of Dean and Andy. "Definitely." Pause. "Wait, who's Sam? Have you been holding out on me?" She teased.
