Entry tags:!shelved, connor temple, day 23, location: clock tower, nymphadora tonks

Who: Tonks and Connor [Anyone else in the vicinity of the clocktower?]
What: Tonks wakes up less alone than she went to sleep.
Where: The Clocktower
When: Day 23, 630-ish
Rating/Status: Low, Incomplete

Tonks was, honestly, more infinitely grateful for Connor coming for her than she let on. Though she kept up well enough in the journals, the witch was just a little more scared than she wanted to show. It wasn't that she was too tough-girl to accept help, just this shouldn't affect the Auror as much as it did. But it did affect her. The zombies had freaked her out.

Zombies were close to Inferi and those were some frightening creatures. The undead were frightening creatures. And it was understandable, being scared, but generally the pushed through it. She had to. At least when it came to scary things at home. Here at Vas Captio should really be no different. So why was this one so different? She kept trying to figure it out, going over and over what was so different. The only theory that she could come up with was that it wasn't different. Not really. Death Eaters would do the same exact thing. And that frightened Nymphadora Tonks. Especially because her friends and family were still there, fighting.

Normally, Tonks would have gone to Sirius and Remus with these rushing thoughts. She would have talked with them and joked around or let spill a little of her worries. But Sirius wasn't here and Remus had no idea about the war. It was going to stay that way, too. So that automatically crossed out Rose, since she too was friends with Remus. Tonks was going to just stick in her head, but Connor..saviour with a thing for dinosaurs..spoke up. He eventually got over to the clock tower, which really was a stupid stupid thing considering said zombies..but still. And Tonks spent the nite talking with him and joking around. It was comforting.

It took a while but she was finally able to go to sleep. It wasn't terribly deep or restful, but sleep all the same. She would have slept a little longer, since it was still dark outside, but there was some weird (gross) smell that was rousing her from the fitful sleep. Tonks sat up, looking around bleary-eyed.

"What is that smell?" Asked groggily, wiping at her eyes. If she were more awake, she might have teased Connor about needing a shower. But as it was, she wasn't fully awake. That is, until she looked over to her side and found a decaying Luna Lovegood staring at her glassy-eyed.

Tonks didn't scream, but did make a noise. A lot of noise. The first was a gasp, quickly covered by her hand, and the second was her clumsily trying to back away.

Tonks caught the look of hurt that was on Connor's face and nudged against him lightly. He was still alive, and they were in it together. "Thick an' thin like." Said quietly, though she didn't begin that particular thought out loud. So might get a weird look for it.

When he moved and pulled loose a piece of stone, Tonks stared at him in a mixture of incredulity and curiosity. Then smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Connor." She took the second stone and looked again at Luna. A single nod and then she looked around, walking over and picking up the blanket that had been left at the clock tower. "We can use this for her." Still her, not it.

Connor was the same bloke who'd once tried to pick up girls in a bar with a line concerning comic book characters. Tonks wasn't going to be getting any weird looks from him! After all, who was he to judge? As far as he was concerned, weird was just another level of brilliant.

Though his smile was weak, he offered her one just the same. This wasn't like burying one of his close mates. He hadn't even known her. But people he'd become friends with did, and after the long night of chatting he'd had with Tonks, he definitely considered her a close friend. He handed his makeshift-shovel to her and took the blanket instead. "Here," he offered, and spoke no more as he held his breath and gently wrapped the blanket around Luna's limp body. Though she'd tried to attack him only two days prior, she looked completely innocent in death. With a deep breath out of the side of his mouth, he scooped her into his arms and nodded Tonks towards the tower's entrance.

Honestly, Tonks would have totally gone along with the line. Provided that the comic book was part of her Muggle wealth of knowledge. And even if it wasn't, then she would have asked about it. That was just how she was. Not to mention the fact that she loved weird people. Quirky people. They were the interesting ones. Suave and debonair sort of folks wouldn't likely deal with her shenanigans as well as quirky ones would.

Either way, she was returning Connor's wan smile and nodded. Tonks moved forward to help him, but the smile was flashed again briefly in gratitude. Instead, she hurried forward and cleared the way of any debris that might have been in his way.

Once they were outside, Tonks pointed to an area that might be good for the..burial. "Over there, yeah?" Quietly asked. Then she was walking again. "I didn't even really know her, honestly. Not at this age." She paused, thinking about it. "I'm not even sure about in my older age." There had always been this feeling that there was something Luna wasn't saying to her.

It was still dark out. Why was it still dark? No wonder they'd slapped watches on them, otherwise they'd have no way of telling whether a day had gone by or not. No, it wasn't particularly late, but it was definitely later than all that. At least a glimmer of the sun should've been peeking up by then. Clearly, whether the zombies were out and about or not, they weren't getting sunlight today.

"You obviously knew her well enough to make them happy," he said quietly, gently laying Luna's body down before kneeling to find a soft patch to start digging. He was gentle less for the dead girl and more for himself. Dropping her body with a sickening thud would've made his stomach turn an indescribable amount. That and it was just disrespectful, really.

He looked up at Tonks, giving her a smile. "But you did know her? At some point, I mean?" Reaching out a hand for the bit that was going to be his shovel, he bit his lip. He kind of hated manual labor. This was worse than X-Box by far. He missed his X-Box.

It was dark and oughtn't be. And there had been a niggling voice in Tonks' head the past few days that it was her fault. She had asked for no moon..for Remus..and this was what she got. No moon. No sun. The guilt had been there, but stayed quiet..a dragon hiding in its cave while she dealt with eye-pecking birds and brains-eating zombies. But now? Now the dragon was out, and she was feeling like a snowman underneath its flame.

Shaking off that thought, both mentally and physically, Tonks crouched down as well and started working on loosening the earth. She stared at her work, intent on it, and then chuckled. "I think they like t'fuck with us regardless." Whether she knew the blonde woman well enough or not. But Tonks looked up as well and nodded. "I did know her." Proud to have known such a good woman, a good witch.

Even if Connor had known about Tonks' deal with the Management, he wouldn't have blamed her for wanting to step in and help a friend. He'd have done the same thing in her great big boots. It was part of having a big heart, he supposed, putting yourself on the line for your friends. And really? They could all deal with a little darkness. It was annoying, sure, but not impossible to live with.

They worked in silence for a bit, Connor occasionally looking up to check on Tonks. "You okay?" he asked a bit later, then smiled and shook his head. "Who'm I kidding? You're probably better for this than I am. Training for witch coppery or what have you. Coppery? Cop-being? You know what I mean. We run around a fair bit, but there's no real training for that. My flatmate, Abby, she's the real athlete. Does kickboxing and the like. Could beat my arse if I let her." Sure, he was rambling. But it filled the silence, and digging a grave wasn't something he really longed to do in silence. Mostly cause it was just weird.

She worked in silence, which was always a bit weird for her. What was even more weird was that she couldn't think of what to say. Hence the silence. Although it did take a bit of concentration to try and break apart the earth with a stone shovel. Why couldn't it have been all wet and misty today, rather than before? Oy.

She looked up, deer-in-headlights style, when Connor asked if she was alright and grinned wryly. "Witch Coppery. I like that." She was definitely going to take that home with her. And shrugged a little, "S'different because there aren't spells being thrown an' I don't have the ability to throw them back.." Trailed off there, but mostly because she started laughing. Quiet, but laughter all the same. "Us birds are tough. Don't you forget it." Said with a wink. "I'd like ta meet this Abby." Said after a moment, smiling a bit as she went back to work.

"Though, not here."

Connor winced at the very thought of Abby being dragged to this place. Granted, she wasn't one who'd take it lightly. She'd be all over the place, telling off the Management anywhere she thought they could hear. And since the possibility of dying was around every corner, maybe he'd actually make a bit of progress with her. But at the end of the day, he really didn't want her here.

Even if it might be nice for her to see him with friends who weren't completely dorky like him. And, you know, looking somewhat useful. Hmm.

He rocked back on his heels, giving his knuckles a stretch before he went back to the digging. "She reminds me a bit of you, actually," he admitted, his cheeks flushing a bit. "Spunky. Doesn't take anything from anyone. She loves animals. It's her whole life, honestly, she's a zookeeper when she's not running around dealing with portals through time and the like. Reptiles, they're her specialty." Yep, still rambling. And about another girl. Connor really would never learn. "We actually have a pet dinosaur at home. Rex, he's called. Little guy, flying sort, really kind of cute till he decides my scarf makes a better bed than his terrarium."

Tonks understood the wince. When she learned that Remus was here, even if it wasn't the Remus that knew her yet, there was a slight happiness at knowing someone. And the distinct feeling of dread, felt more keenly because she did know him.

She listened as he rambling, chuckling and looking up from time to time. "A zookeeper? That's pretty keen, actually. I'd be dead worried that I'd fall in with the monkeys or something!" Tonks looked up again, blowing a piece of hair out of her eyes once more, and then grinned. "So you've asked her out yet?"

Wait. Wait. "A flying dinosaur! As a pet! That's way better than an owl!"
