Who: Tonks and Connor [Anyone else in the vicinity of the clocktower?]
What: Tonks wakes up less alone than she went to sleep.
Where: The Clocktower
When: Day 23, 630-ish
Rating/Status: Low, Incomplete

Tonks was, honestly, more infinitely grateful for Connor coming for her than she let on. Though she kept up well enough in the journals, the witch was just a little more scared than she wanted to show. It wasn't that she was too tough-girl to accept help, just this shouldn't affect the Auror as much as it did. But it did affect her. The zombies had freaked her out.

Zombies were close to Inferi and those were some frightening creatures. The undead were frightening creatures. And it was understandable, being scared, but generally the pushed through it. She had to. At least when it came to scary things at home. Here at Vas Captio should really be no different. So why was this one so different? She kept trying to figure it out, going over and over what was so different. The only theory that she could come up with was that it wasn't different. Not really. Death Eaters would do the same exact thing. And that frightened Nymphadora Tonks. Especially because her friends and family were still there, fighting.

Normally, Tonks would have gone to Sirius and Remus with these rushing thoughts. She would have talked with them and joked around or let spill a little of her worries. But Sirius wasn't here and Remus had no idea about the war. It was going to stay that way, too. So that automatically crossed out Rose, since she too was friends with Remus. Tonks was going to just stick in her head, but Connor..saviour with a thing for dinosaurs..spoke up. He eventually got over to the clock tower, which really was a stupid stupid thing considering said zombies..but still. And Tonks spent the nite talking with him and joking around. It was comforting.

It took a while but she was finally able to go to sleep. It wasn't terribly deep or restful, but sleep all the same. She would have slept a little longer, since it was still dark outside, but there was some weird (gross) smell that was rousing her from the fitful sleep. Tonks sat up, looking around bleary-eyed.

"What is that smell?" Asked groggily, wiping at her eyes. If she were more awake, she might have teased Connor about needing a shower. But as it was, she wasn't fully awake. That is, until she looked over to her side and found a decaying Luna Lovegood staring at her glassy-eyed.

Tonks didn't scream, but did make a noise. A lot of noise. The first was a gasp, quickly covered by her hand, and the second was her clumsily trying to back away.

At first, the noise from the pretty young witch didn't rouse her companion for the evening from his rather deep sleep. It was a proven fact that Connor could sleep through anything, and it typically took effort on Abby's part to get him out of bed. This place had lessened that a bit, but not greatly so. After all, he did realise they were in danger at basically all times. But it was dark and he was relatively comfortable, his trusty fedora doubling as a head rest when needed.

But first he heard that voice, and for a moment thought he'd just dozed off while they were talking. And he started to rouse, getting ready to apologise. Then he heard her gasp and the sound of scrambling and then the smell hit him. "What the hell?" he mumbled.

By the time Connor lifted his head, he gagged. He couldn't help it, hard as he tried. He sat up in a hurry, taking slow breaths, forcing himself not to wretch. Unfortunately, breathing in excess only made the smell increase. Ew. Lying there a few feet away, right where Tonks had been sleeping a few moments earlier, was the zombie that he and Chris and Andy had faced two days prior. Andy's friend, Luna.

"Friend of yours?" he asked weakly, looking over at Tonks in disbelief. What a wonderful start to a morning, thanks, Management.

She was coughing, gagging on the smell, and nuzzled her nose in the collar of her shirt, trying anything to get away from the damn noxious odour. "Fuckin' management.." Oh, Luna. Palming her eyes as to wake up more fully and to stop them from watering, Tonks nodded. But, other than that, she didn't look away.

"I knew her. She was from my..world." Whatever they wanted to call it. Her hand balled into a fist then, wanting for all the world to just hit the people who did this. Not that it would do any good, but it might have made her feel a tiny little bit better. Tonks knew Connor was there, and knew that they'd have to get away from the smell soon, but she still couldn't look away.

"What if this is just it?" Asked quietly. "They get tired of us and, at best, put us back in our world..but make everyone else deal with this." She fingered the hem of her shirt. "What if this--" What if it was what her friends and family looked like at home?

Connor's heart sank. He hadn't considered back home in some time. Honestly, they were fighting for survival every day in this place. It was kind of hard to think about much of anything else. But Tonks' words brought him crashing back down. Back home, something had happened. They noticed he was gone, surely. But how? And what was left? What if they'd all been taken, wound up in places like this? The conspiracy theory lover in him was having a field day. Too bad this one actually involved him.

But that wasn't exactly what Tonks needed to hear just then. Getting to his feet, he edged his way around the small body and knelt at Tonks' side, gathering her into a hug. Geeks were sometimes very good at hugs. "Shhh," he said softly, giving her a squeeze. "I'm sure that's not it at all. Maybe... Maybe in your world she's considered missing. No one knows. This could be bad witches, see. You're an Auror, you arrest them." He was trying to keep some levity in his tone, but it was difficult with those lifeless blue eyes watching them.

Tonks wondered a whole bunch of things at the same time very often. It was sometimes difficult for her to turn off her brain, hence thoughts like that. She didn't register the hug for a moment, but then turned and offered a wan smile in thanks for it.

Looking back at Luna, Tonks took a breath..and started coughing again. Bad idea, that whole breathing thing. Connor was right, attempting to joke aside. She was an Auror and arrested people like the management. She could do this. Right? Honestly, she wasn't too sure anymore. "How long is this going to go on?"

"I don't know," Connor admitted, leaning back on his heels. "Till they get the results they want? We're a science experiment, right? Usually, an experiment has a set time. Once the results are achieved..." Of course, he didn't know what results they were looking for. How long until all of them died? That wasn't exactly helpful. How long it would take to drive them all mad? Also not helpful. "Or maybe they'll lose funding, it's got to take a bloody fortune to keep this place running, you know?" Keep trying to be logical. It was the only way Connor knew.

"We should... You know." He nodded his head towards the body lying there on the floor. She'd probably been quite pretty once. Was that a trait among all witches, he wondered? Girls would probably find Chris pretty fit, too, and he was a witch, as well. Strange, the places one's mind went when they didn't want to face up to the fact that they were dealing with a very dead and decomposing body in front of them.

He sounded so precise, so..logical. It was actually a good thing. Tonks nodded and then pushed a hand through hair that went mousey sometime during the short time period of the ordeal. She closed her eyes for a minute and then nodded again.

First things first though. She crouched down again and reached over, fingers passing over Luna's open eyes to close them for her. It was a stupid, little thing really. But Tonks felt it was the least she could do. She looked up at Connor then, eyebrows furrowed together.

"I've never--" She paused, shrugging up her shoulders. "I've never lost anyone before." Well, she had, but she didn't know about it. So it didn't count.

Connor's eyes closed for a moment. It was one thing to know this woman had been a living and breathing person, but to befriend two people who'd obviously cared about her? It made her a thousand times more real, and she deserved a moment of respect as Tonks carefully closed her eyes.

"I have," he said quietly, a moment later. "A few, actually. It's...my line of work, I guess." How many times had he seen employees of the ARC get trampeled, diseased, or attacked? And then there'd been Tom and Steven and... "Before I got here... Right before, I lost someone. He was...everything to our team. I don't know how they're managing without him now." Biting his lip, he shrugged, then knelt down next to the rotting corpse. Despite her current condition, he couldn't help but have his heart go out to her. She didn't deserve to end up this way. No one did.

"Have a dog handy?" he asked, attempting a small smile. "They could dig for us." Ugh, that was a morbid thought.

"You'd think I would have..but we've been really lucky so far." With the fighting and drums of war sounding. "And I'm so sorry." She couldn't imagine losing the integral people of the Order. Tonks couldn't imagine losing any of them.

In spite of herself, Tonks laughed. It was a quick laugh, unexpected even from the woman who was fast to that sort of noise, and was followed by coughing at the stench. All the same, she glanced over to Connor with a small smile of thanks. Then ruffled up her hair again.

"I dunno of any dogs running round..but I think I could do the digging." They'd need a shovel. She looked around the area, eyebrows drawing downward as she sought maybe a piece of wood that could be fashioned into a shovel.

Connor's face still showed the hurt of the losses they'd faced at the ARC. Too many funerals. And he was going to miss the next one. Probably already had. Maybe they were having one for him, not knowing what had become of him. It hurt, to be quite honest. And yet a secret part of him wondered who would be there to mourn. What sort of search would go on. It was definitely something to consider.

But his mind went elsewhere when she ruffled her hair. Very cute, that little gesture, even if it had gone mousey with mourning. "Hang on," he said, feeling around on the walls. The tower was made of stone, right? Shovels were made of stone. And the stupid building was ancient. "We'll be exhausted after we do this," he advised her, but grinned as he eased a loose piece of the wall out. He held his breath, not only for the stench but because with his luck, the whole thing could go crashing down. When it didn't, he began the search for a second one. "But you're not doing it alone, either."

Tonks caught the look of hurt that was on Connor's face and nudged against him lightly. He was still alive, and they were in it together. "Thick an' thin like." Said quietly, though she didn't begin that particular thought out loud. So might get a weird look for it.

When he moved and pulled loose a piece of stone, Tonks stared at him in a mixture of incredulity and curiosity. Then smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Connor." She took the second stone and looked again at Luna. A single nod and then she looked around, walking over and picking up the blanket that had been left at the clock tower. "We can use this for her." Still her, not it.

Connor was the same bloke who'd once tried to pick up girls in a bar with a line concerning comic book characters. Tonks wasn't going to be getting any weird looks from him! After all, who was he to judge? As far as he was concerned, weird was just another level of brilliant.

Though his smile was weak, he offered her one just the same. This wasn't like burying one of his close mates. He hadn't even known her. But people he'd become friends with did, and after the long night of chatting he'd had with Tonks, he definitely considered her a close friend. He handed his makeshift-shovel to her and took the blanket instead. "Here," he offered, and spoke no more as he held his breath and gently wrapped the blanket around Luna's limp body. Though she'd tried to attack him only two days prior, she looked completely innocent in death. With a deep breath out of the side of his mouth, he scooped her into his arms and nodded Tonks towards the tower's entrance.

Honestly, Tonks would have totally gone along with the line. Provided that the comic book was part of her Muggle wealth of knowledge. And even if it wasn't, then she would have asked about it. That was just how she was. Not to mention the fact that she loved weird people. Quirky people. They were the interesting ones. Suave and debonair sort of folks wouldn't likely deal with her shenanigans as well as quirky ones would.

Either way, she was returning Connor's wan smile and nodded. Tonks moved forward to help him, but the smile was flashed again briefly in gratitude. Instead, she hurried forward and cleared the way of any debris that might have been in his way.

Once they were outside, Tonks pointed to an area that might be good for the..burial. "Over there, yeah?" Quietly asked. Then she was walking again. "I didn't even really know her, honestly. Not at this age." She paused, thinking about it. "I'm not even sure about in my older age." There had always been this feeling that there was something Luna wasn't saying to her.

It was still dark out. Why was it still dark? No wonder they'd slapped watches on them, otherwise they'd have no way of telling whether a day had gone by or not. No, it wasn't particularly late, but it was definitely later than all that. At least a glimmer of the sun should've been peeking up by then. Clearly, whether the zombies were out and about or not, they weren't getting sunlight today.

"You obviously knew her well enough to make them happy," he said quietly, gently laying Luna's body down before kneeling to find a soft patch to start digging. He was gentle less for the dead girl and more for himself. Dropping her body with a sickening thud would've made his stomach turn an indescribable amount. That and it was just disrespectful, really.

He looked up at Tonks, giving her a smile. "But you did know her? At some point, I mean?" Reaching out a hand for the bit that was going to be his shovel, he bit his lip. He kind of hated manual labor. This was worse than X-Box by far. He missed his X-Box.

It was dark and oughtn't be. And there had been a niggling voice in Tonks' head the past few days that it was her fault. She had asked for no moon..for Remus..and this was what she got. No moon. No sun. The guilt had been there, but stayed quiet..a dragon hiding in its cave while she dealt with eye-pecking birds and brains-eating zombies. But now? Now the dragon was out, and she was feeling like a snowman underneath its flame.

Shaking off that thought, both mentally and physically, Tonks crouched down as well and started working on loosening the earth. She stared at her work, intent on it, and then chuckled. "I think they like t'fuck with us regardless." Whether she knew the blonde woman well enough or not. But Tonks looked up as well and nodded. "I did know her." Proud to have known such a good woman, a good witch.

Even if Connor had known about Tonks' deal with the Management, he wouldn't have blamed her for wanting to step in and help a friend. He'd have done the same thing in her great big boots. It was part of having a big heart, he supposed, putting yourself on the line for your friends. And really? They could all deal with a little darkness. It was annoying, sure, but not impossible to live with.

They worked in silence for a bit, Connor occasionally looking up to check on Tonks. "You okay?" he asked a bit later, then smiled and shook his head. "Who'm I kidding? You're probably better for this than I am. Training for witch coppery or what have you. Coppery? Cop-being? You know what I mean. We run around a fair bit, but there's no real training for that. My flatmate, Abby, she's the real athlete. Does kickboxing and the like. Could beat my arse if I let her." Sure, he was rambling. But it filled the silence, and digging a grave wasn't something he really longed to do in silence. Mostly cause it was just weird.

She worked in silence, which was always a bit weird for her. What was even more weird was that she couldn't think of what to say. Hence the silence. Although it did take a bit of concentration to try and break apart the earth with a stone shovel. Why couldn't it have been all wet and misty today, rather than before? Oy.

She looked up, deer-in-headlights style, when Connor asked if she was alright and grinned wryly. "Witch Coppery. I like that." She was definitely going to take that home with her. And shrugged a little, "S'different because there aren't spells being thrown an' I don't have the ability to throw them back.." Trailed off there, but mostly because she started laughing. Quiet, but laughter all the same. "Us birds are tough. Don't you forget it." Said with a wink. "I'd like ta meet this Abby." Said after a moment, smiling a bit as she went back to work.

"Though, not here."

Connor winced at the very thought of Abby being dragged to this place. Granted, she wasn't one who'd take it lightly. She'd be all over the place, telling off the Management anywhere she thought they could hear. And since the possibility of dying was around every corner, maybe he'd actually make a bit of progress with her. But at the end of the day, he really didn't want her here.

Even if it might be nice for her to see him with friends who weren't completely dorky like him. And, you know, looking somewhat useful. Hmm.

He rocked back on his heels, giving his knuckles a stretch before he went back to the digging. "She reminds me a bit of you, actually," he admitted, his cheeks flushing a bit. "Spunky. Doesn't take anything from anyone. She loves animals. It's her whole life, honestly, she's a zookeeper when she's not running around dealing with portals through time and the like. Reptiles, they're her specialty." Yep, still rambling. And about another girl. Connor really would never learn. "We actually have a pet dinosaur at home. Rex, he's called. Little guy, flying sort, really kind of cute till he decides my scarf makes a better bed than his terrarium."

Tonks understood the wince. When she learned that Remus was here, even if it wasn't the Remus that knew her yet, there was a slight happiness at knowing someone. And the distinct feeling of dread, felt more keenly because she did know him.

She listened as he rambling, chuckling and looking up from time to time. "A zookeeper? That's pretty keen, actually. I'd be dead worried that I'd fall in with the monkeys or something!" Tonks looked up again, blowing a piece of hair out of her eyes once more, and then grinned. "So you've asked her out yet?"

Wait. Wait. "A flying dinosaur! As a pet! That's way better than an owl!"

Connor nearly choked when Tonks asked her question and was grateful for the reprieve. Was he that bloody obvious? Yes, he was head over heels for Abby and she had him completely wrapped. But that didn't mean... It would be unprofessional! They couldn't possibly. Besides, she knew him too well, she'd never actually go out with him. "Uh, yeah," he sputtered, skimming over the subject completely. "He's a pretty brilliant excuse for a pet. She's got lizards and snakes and things, too, but he's more like a pet dog would be. Comes when he's called, follows you around the flat waiting for treats..."

He grinned, then, rocking back on his owls. "Do all witches have pet owls, then? Or are odd flying pets all the rage with spunky arse-kicking girls? What's wrong with dogs and cats, here?"

Well, the Auror wasn't an Auror..and wasn't nosy..for nothing. She hadn't been sure, but that definitely tipped her off. "If she's really like me as you say, she'd be thrilled." Trust Tonks, Connor. If a certain older werewolf got the gumption to ask her on a date? Over the moon. But that was that for the subject of Abby, and she was moving on easily.

"I've always wanted a dog! And some people have owls. They're dead helpful, really. Personal delivery for your post, rather than going to the Owl Post Office, and really clever..Some people have cats and rats..Toads were popular when my mum was a kid, I think." She grinned a little, eyebrows lifting. "I've got fish is all."

His eyebrows lifted and he grinned as he wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. Even from that distance, he could feel his mum thwapping him upside the back of the head for that little gesture. Well, it wasn't like he had a towel there, Mum.

But something Tonks said had caught his interest and he peered at her. "Wait...the Owl Post Office? You get your post delivered...by owl?" Okay, now that? Was kind of brilliant. Sure beat the scary old bloke who came by the flat! "I'm guessing at that rate I'd want one, too." For a moment, he actually wondered who would take care of her fish with her here. But that couldn't exactly be a top priority when he was worried about the actual humans involved.

No towels and this was sweaty manual labour. The management were kind enough to turn up the heat. Just in time for dead bodies and physical work. Thanks, management. Or, you know, not.

"Yeah! They're ace at finding people, you know?" Actually, she didn't know how that worked exactly..the owls finding people all over the place. It wasn't something she ever really thought about. It simply was. Back to digging, coughing as she inhaled too much dirt and rot-smell. "We have owleries too, so you can borrow one? They're fun. Don't always like me though. I've knocked over their treat bowls one too many times."

Connor looked up worriedly when she started coughing, but shortly resumed his work once he realised she was okay. Automatic reaction, he supposed. This place had lost enough people, he'd do what he could to make sure she wasn't next.

"They don't bite?" he asked curiously. "Abby'd get a kick out of a pet owl. Or else she'd start trying to teach Rex to bring in the post. That's just how she is. He'd do it, too," he added with a laugh as he thought of the little green dinosaur. "Silly thing, never actually acts like a lizard. I've even caught him sleeping at the foot of her bed." Did that make him sound like a stalker? Like he'd been watching her sleep? Oh, he hoped not, he felt weird enough in this place! "See? Just like a dog. Bet you don't have many owls who'll do that one!" Not that he was competing, he just found it kind of funny.

They were getting pretty deep for two people using stone not much bigger than their own hands. But if they were going to put a human down there, it had to go deeper. What a morbid thought that was.

Quirky little smile flashed at his worried look. She was fine. A trooper, even. They all were, around here. Shrugging at his question, Tonks looked up briefly before digging deeper. They could be here all day. And were definitely going to hurt in the morning. The witch hoped that she'd get a reprieve and be able to sleep. "They bite. Sometimes little love-nips and sometimes angry angry nips. But I think any sorta pet is great." Unable to help herself, she burst into a short but loud round of laughter at the thought of a dinosaur (a dinosaur! Really!) fetching the mail.

"If she could do that, she'd give the entire Wizarding community a run for their money."

Connor grinned despite their grim situation. Props to her for making him smile in spite of the stupid Management and their awful idea of a morning surprise. Of course, it also made him a little wistful, remembering days spent getting ready for day-to-day life at the ARC with Abby puttering around the flat and Rex sitting and watching him as he ate his breakfast. But at least it was a good memory, unlike some of the more depressing ones he'd been reliving recently.

"Hang on," he said a beat later, climbing down into the hole they'd created so far. The least those people could've done was given them a crane, or at least a few proper shovels. It'd be easier to continue their work from down there, though. "She'd think you lot were amazing, I bet. Might not even believe it at first." He had. How could he not? Magic and witchcraft had been on that list of things he desperately hoped really existed. "Wish I could see it, you know? All these worlds and times we keep seeing about here?"

Unable to help the face that she made when he jumped into the hole, Tonks shook her head a little and tried to focus on things other than the fact that Connor was jumping into what would soon be a grave. Don't do that, she wanted to say. Not that she was a terribly superstitious person..just it was macabre.

Instead, she focused on what he said. "But you believed right quick, which I think is fascinating." It always intrigued Tonks how Muggles took to the knowledge that magic was real. Her grandparents, so she had been told, were startled but welcoming all the same. Harry's aunt and uncle, she knew were not so open-minded about it. It was just interesting.

Connor caught the face she made and looked up at her with a soft smile. "We won't get it deep enough to hide her completely if I don't get down here. It'll be alright." Reaching up, he gave her booted foot a gentle squeeze before continuing his work. She could move the dirt he tossed up out of the way; she didn't need to be down there with him. The worst case scenario that ran through his head was some sort of dirt cave-in, and he didn't want her involved.

"To be honest," he admitted as he continued, "I've always wanted to believe all of that was real. And vampires and werewolves and ghosts...things that go bump in the night? I've always been into cryptozoology, too. The Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, all of that. I actually got the job studying the anomalies by investigating a potential hoax that turned out to be real." He grinned at the memory of Cutter and Steven's reactions on seeing the paper. And then his face fell a little, remembering he wouldn't talk to either of them again.
