A kitten with no apparent human attached just walked up to my desk in Special Collections to sit on my keyboard and demand pets. What's the protocol on spontaneously appearing animals here? Am I free to take him home and give him a pretentious name, or do I need to clear that with some Vallo authority first?

How do you feel about short stories and poetry? The first two pieces of feline literature that come to mind are Poe's "The Black Cat" and Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

I feel strongly amenable to them. Anything I can read aloud to my wife in the evenings, the better. And now she will be serenaded with cats.

Do yourself a favor and do not look up the musical based on the Eliot.

So you know the musical as well, then? You have been holding out on me.

Why would you subject yourself to Andrew Lloyd Webber's cocaine-fueled madness?

You are actually making it more interesting, I hope you know. Cocaine-fueled madness.

No, but it's not the good kind of cocaine-fueled madness. This is not New Wave or early Stephen King. This is the bad kind of cocaine-fueled madness, all wrapped up in the lowest form of theater.

Do not underestimate how low I will stoop for terrible theater. I also have not the slightest clue what New Wave is or who is Stephen King. Should I?

If you're roughly contemporary with Mary Shelley, you're in no way ready for New Wave. It won't make sense without punk, which doesn't make sense without progressive rock...and so on and so forth. Try listening to "Maple Leaf Rag" and see if it offends your ears, and we'll work up from there.

You might enjoy some Stephen King, though. Salem's Lot isn't too steeped in Americana and modern references; try that one, if you're looking for more vampires after you take on Dracula.

I am truly the luckiest woman in all of Vallo. PLEASE do not look up the musical

It will be better than the howls of actual cats, I promise you.

I have a lovely singing voice. I do not know what you are going on about.

It should be interesting to hear you sing along with your accent, at the very least.

How diplomatic of you to call it interesting. You believe it's going to be awful, and I plan to lean into it.

I find your accent to be delightful! The musical is a side of horrifying.

It is the only way to keep balance in the world, I assume. If I was singing something lovely, you would be unable to contain yourself.
