A kitten with no apparent human attached just walked up to my desk in Special Collections to sit on my keyboard and demand pets. What's the protocol on spontaneously appearing animals here? Am I free to take him home and give him a pretentious name, or do I need to clear that with some Vallo authority first?

Sounds right. Isn't that just how the Cat Distribution System works in every world?

It's certainly how it works on my version of Earth. My only reason for concern is that I'm fairly certain the kitten just appeared here rather than walking in the door. I wasn't sure if animals needed to go through the DOA the way the rest of us do.

I also thought it important to mention in case the first response was "Oh no, the Teleporting Murder Kittens are back, arm yourselves!"

Oh. Well yeah that's fair. Does it seem bent on murder? I mean, more than most cats.

So far the only thing it's attempted to murder is my shoelaces. It hissed at the door but went no further than that, so my current ruling is that it's no more dangerous than the average Vallo resident.

Shoelaces are replaceable. So are doors. Congrats on the cat.

I would say checking around to make sure the little guy doesn't belong to anyone would be a safe call, and I think this post counts!

Do you get a lot of spontaneous cats at the Library?

We don't, which is why I thought bringing the matter to the network was wise. It wouldn't be easy for a kitten to make its way to my part of the library without being noticed, so given the ways of Vallo, I suspect he just appeared here by some means.

Definitely not impossible. I had a dog from my home planet appear here several weeks back. They don't seem to attract the same DOA attention that we Outlanders do. Is there anything distinct about the cat that might identify it?

Not especially. It's a white and orange kitten, fond of attacking shoelaces.

And its mouth apparently explodes into tentacles when it's startled.

Ignoring the tentacle situation for a moment, I would like to hear your pretentious name options. Do they change now that it might be a monster disguised as something adorable?

Initially I'd been considering famous redheads of art and literature as namesakes. Vincent Van Gogh still might work even with the surprise tentacles. I'm now running through my mental list of monsters and horrors and wondering if Hydra is too on-the-nose.

Perhaps that could be its middle name, so you can appease both sides. Vincent Hydra Van Gogh.

I rather like that. It's going on the list of possibilities.

King Henry VIII was also a monster with red hair, but I'm not sure he ever seemed cute and cuddly. Bram Stoker was a redhead who wrote about monsters; there might be something there.

Do you think someone released a bunch of wild kittens on Vallo? I found two in the sewer just now and they're very dirty. I'm going to clean them up but I don't think my lynx will like kittens around very much.

Yes! Her name is Irene. My sister found her wounded in the Carpathians while I was at school. I nursed her back to health and then she stayed with us.

Is magic involved in that at all, or is your family just uncommonly good with wild animals?

That's encouraging. Thus far this one just acts like a kitten. He has claws like tiny needles, as I just learned when he climbed my pants leg, but the tentacle tendencies apparently come out rather rarely.

With cats, there's always a chance for minor violence. One of the species's charms.
