When I was a child the New Year was celebrated further into the spring, closer to when the plants would start to bloom and the planting of that year's crops. It was strange to see it celebrated in the middle of winter, but it was nice to see it celebrated. As the blight took hold most stopped having the same feats and celebrations of the New Year, which I find I can not blame many for. Hard to want to celebrate when there is little to celebrate.

I have heard it is customary to make resolutions, or to set an intent for the New Year. I have given much thought to this over the past few days and find myself unable to come up with much outside of reading more books solely for the sake of reading them. Has anyone managed to make a list of resolutions? Or do most just simply find it a foolish endeavour?

What's wrong with just having one? Reading books for the sake of them is a good resolution.

I am not aware if anything is or isn't wrong with it. The concept is rather new to me. I do not dislike the idea of only having one, if that is an acceptable thing.

I heard most people don't even keep the ones they do make. Having one is easier to keep up with.

I could see that. Real change needs to come on your own terms, not solely to tick a box.

You technically don't need a resolution for that, if you're just trying to better yourself.

Which could be a journey started at anytime, to tie it to a particular date seems a little silly. To me at least.

New year, new you. People like starting over, it's appealing.

I still feel like I haven't gotten a handle on old me, let alone a new me. It would be exhausting, to feel like every year required a reinvention.

I don't know if it would be full reinvention. If you better a part of yourself that was lacking the year before, doesn't that already make you new person?

I suppose. I will have to ruminate on this one a little I think. I've never much had chance to reflect on parts of me that might be lacking, at least in the ways I believe is being meant here.

You're off to a good start. Do what makes you happy. Even if that's not making a resolution at all.

Aye, we celebrated New Years a bit differently where I'm from, but the idea of it is still the same. Fer me, any excuse for a party, you know?

I don't think making a resolution is a bad thing, lad.

What kind of celebrations did you do?

I do not have any strong opinion one way or the other. I see the merit in wanting to start a new year with a strong intent, but I also see how it could easily fail, or if your intent is not entirely pure finding it hard to stick to your resolution. Have you made any?

The time between Christmas Eve and Twelfth Night was a whole thing for us back home. New Years in particular meant a lot of traveling around and visiting friends, family and neighbors and drinking and singing and giving little gifts.

I don't have a resolution, but I have a goal. Does that count?

That sounds like a lovely way to celebrate.

I believe so. What is your goal, if you do not mind my asking?

Aye, it was fun. It was a bit of a more low key affair for my family since we were kinfolk, but we still had a good time.

To finish my GED so I can go to university. My education back home wasn't considered important, and I think this is my chance to change that.

It must have been nice to spend that time with them.

What is a GED?
That sounds like a very good goal though, I am a firm believer in the importance of expanding your knowledge. I am glad you will get the chance to do so here.

It was. I haven't seen them since I was shipped off. I miss them.

I think it's...actually I don't know what it stands for. All I know is that you need if if you didn't go to school beyond the primary years (which I didn't) and want to go on to University.

Aye, well, I see a lot of talk on here from others going and I wondered if I could go too.

Perhaps you will see them again one day. Vallo might seem it fit to bring some to you even.

I think it is something worth looking into more, Kellach. I'm sure those who are already going can help you sort it out.

Maybe, but I'm not sure if I want them to come here. I feel real bad about that, because I miss my family so much, but...Vallo can be a dangerous place and my Ma and sister aren't fighters. I don't want them to get hurt.

Thank you, Joshua. Abi is helping me. She was the one who told me about the GED and she's been helping me study for it. There's a lot I have to learn and get ready for.

That is very understandable. I find myself in a somewhat similar mindset. My brother can more than hold his own, but as much as I would like him here, I would only want to see it happen if Jill were here well. I would not want him to be here without her, despite how much I miss him.

I do not know how this all works here but if there is anything I can do to assist, or even if you just want some quiet company while you study, please let me know.

That's very nice of you to offer, lad. I'd like some company now and then, help me keep my mind on what's in front of me.

She became a ward of Rosaria after the war with the Northern Territories, and a great friend to both my brother and I. They have become quite inseparable since their reunion a few years ago.

Then company you shall have.

Thank you, lad. I appreciate it. I'll try not to annoy you too much with any questions I have.

People tend to make them and break them within the first two weeks. It’s just as arbitrary a date as any other time. Which is probably all to say if you want to make a resolution you do you, but you’re just as likely to stick to one you make on the 17th of July.

I am not sure I would go that far. Intervention was required to prevent the complete collapse of the world as we knew it. We were doing simply what needed to be done.

Choice was never something I had to begin with. Which is why we fought, so that others could choose how they wanted to live, and die.

Reading more is always a worthwhile activity. My resolution is to break two magical bindings. It will happen, foolish endeavor or not.

One I had unfortunately very little time to partake in before. Or at least outside the constant searching for answers back home. Nothing for sheer indulgence though, which I would like to remedy.

Breaking binds does not sound like a foolish endeavour. What sort of bindings are they?

[info]mutable

That certainly increases the worth. Do you have a favorite genre?

One is a transmutation spell initiated by the fae to bind a dragon in the shape of a human. The other is a life debt that makes it impossible for the cursed to be away from the person to which they indebted themselves.

I - do not know? I picked a few things today that seemed interesting and different from each other. So I suppose I will find out.

Both sound like a horrendous overstep on the caster's behalf.

How exciting then. You have time and peace to discover what moves you.

One was a punishment and the casters were not the ones who decided it. The other was simply faerie being its usual chaotic self. So far, our attempts to break the spells have been altogether unsuccessful.

I don't think there's any foolishness to the endeavor, provided that one keeps realistic expectations. It's new to me as well - the making of resolutions was not done either on the mortal plane or in the demonic realm.
