After taking some Tylenol (I cannot handle an extra glass of wine like I used to, not because re-lived my college years somewhere out in the city) to nurse this stereotypical New Year's headache, I realized that this month marks my sixth month here. I keep thinking this place is going to kick me out like it has the first two times. It's definitely the longest I've been here, and while I miss the two main males of my life, I'm grateful to still be around.

But this sense of staying around long-term has made me realize that I need stable employment to spoil people with. Please see this shameless photo of who I am in need of spoiling. It's both of them.

Background: Military, NASA, Engineer, Astronaut, space-traveled, crash-landed on another planet a galaxy away from Earth, married the prince, became queen, did a lot of politics and sword battle. I enjoy getting my hands dirty. I also enjoy wearing jeans again versus the royal garb.

Would anyone have any leads on some kind of mechanical work? I'm a bit rusty, but I've retained a lot over the years, and if I can successfully figure out the kinks of a one-thousand-year-old spaceship that needed oil changing, I can most likely translate that into smaller vessels.

We're pretty short-staffed at the auto shop, it's just me and Talcott at the moment. If vehicle repair is something that interests you and you don't mind having to talk to customers every now and then.

Oh, I don't mind at all. My diplomatic people skills are permanent. Where are you located?

Downtown Vallo. The shop is Boyd's, with a huge mural on the side thanks to my husband. We do good, honest work there, but I'm not exactly trained in spaceships, so we could use someone who knows their way around hovercrafts and thermal engines.

You also get free rein of the junkyard. Toph always said it was a selling point to potential employees.

As long as you'll be patient while I re-acquaint myself with a few things? I pride myself in being a quick learner at the very least. So far what I've done is kind of like learning how to ride a bike again; some challenges, but overall, the familiarity is there.

That it is. It'll be a good resource to have in case something on my daughter's ship breaks.

You're in good hands. I've had to train a lot of people on the job before who knew nothing. You're better off than most with your foundational knowledge.

If something does break, would you be opposed to me watching and learning from you on how to fix it?

Excellent. I'm excited for the chance. I can come in whenever you're available? I'd love a tour.

Not at all. The ship's been converted into a residential home, but the function to fly and its weaponry remain. It's actually powered by very specific crystals, which has been - interesting, but the rest of it is very much gears and wires and filters.

Of course. I'm there on Wednesday mornings if you'd like to come by then.

I like interesting. Can't say I've ever worked on or driven a vehicle powered by crystals, but I'd like to learn. Now it's my turn to preemptively ask for your patience.

Not yet! I thought maybe I should do a display case with a plexiglass cover so they won't fall.

They're not made of glass but I can understand the precaution. I can see something hitting this place hard enough that it rattles Darla.

Aren't they? I couldn't get you Barbies as a little girl - Eternia had dolls, yes, but not Barbie - so finding someone to make custom ones was something I worked diligently on. I'm glad you liked them.

Take it from one ex-royal to another, the realization that the stay here's for the long haul is a bittersweet one. I'm still unravelling the threads of what I want to do, what I feel obligated to do, what I've been taught to do, and what I should do. Luckily I've got a good bunch here willing to put up with me while I figure it out all.

It is bittersweet, though I am enjoying this - vacation? Early retirement, if this happens to become a permanent home? Vallo reunited me with the daughter I once lost (magical portal kidnapping, it was a terrible time) and that's kept me quite busy.

You're a young royal, though. You have a lot more expectations. How long has it been for you?

I'd gained and lost a title at home, anyway. Spare then heir then shadow monster (it was a terrible time), but it's worked itself out. I've been here for nigh on three years, if you don't count my brief foray into another world when Vallo got saucy.

You though. Muscle memory. How are you taking to your early retirement? (I admit, I've only a vague notion of what an astronaut is other than 'entirely awesome').

I've always hated the 'spare' logic. Did becoming a [...] shadow monster renounce you of your title completely?

Well, I've become a grandmother here and that's been delightful. It helps with the ache of having my husband and son back home, but I've hope to see them here again someday. Having been an astronaut has definitely been an 'entirely awesome' experience and what got me to where I am life, though I do miss traveling among the stars.

I hid it decently for a while, but when it came to light... optics. As you might imagine.

It's a common refrain here, unfortunately - many of us adventurers find that the borders of this world chafe. But there are enough perks here to scratch the itchy feet, as you've indicated. And we could use a mechanic, since Brigitte left.

What does the shadow monster detail entail? I'm imagining something that would seem... obvious? Difficult to hide?

Brigitte. I've heard the name. I also heard she was brilliant in a way that I could never be, but I'm happy to try.

I wouldn't change it. I don't exactly agree with the saying that 'things happen for a reason,' but things have fared well despite all the change and loss.

You've a little one as well, don't you? I've seen you speak about her.
