His grip on her tightened. For a moment, Perses thought that Thea hadn't answered his question and brought up a different topic instead. But, the longer he looked at her, the further he realized her omission was her answer; she didn't believe him.

What did she think? Why was she here if she thought himself involved, guilty? Did she---? His head jerked back, Perses thinking that if the hospital thought he had tried to kill himself, that would explain her presence here. If he had been brought in under the premise of attempting to end his life...

How was that possible? The scene--- Artie's kitchen--- They couldn't possibly have destroyed all signs of a struggle in---

Perses' trail derailed has he realized he had no idea how long he'd been unconscious. What would be the point to---? What would Asteria gain from---?

An act of guilt. The court could, would, see an attempt at his own life as an act of guilt, admittance, that he could no longer bare---

"I didn't do this," Perses asserted, refusing to let Thea go now. She had to believe him, he needed her to. He wouldn't; he may be frustrated, stoic and ornery and standoffish, but killing himself to escape his current reality? No. Though his strength was still a bit weak, he attempted to pull Thea closer anyway.

"I didn't try to kill myself. It was Asteria, the security wizard she's had since our grandfather died. He attacked me, poisoned me. It's been her, she'd behind my father and my grandfather, I didn't--- Listen to me. You have to believe me, I didn't do this. Thea, please, don't--- Please."

She blinked, alarmed by how increasingly agitated Perses was growing, realising she must have misinterpreted his question. Or had she? Had she just read into his question what she'd wanted to, projected onto him what she herself had been thinking? He had been so blasé when Thea had come to him a few weeks ago, had always been so apathetic about every damn thing—was it so mad for her to think that perhaps Perses…

Thea knew he hadn't tried to kill himself, probably would never actively take his own life, but he hadn't seemed too concerned about stopping a clear attempt on his life. "All right," she said, her hands going to his face as she leant in closer, concerned he might work himself into another fit that she would not be able to soothe. Although Perses was still wounded, she did not believe he would allow that to dull her reflexes if she reached for her wand. "I believe you. It's all right."

Not knowing his sister, Thea couldn't say if his accusation surprised her, but it did make a sort of sense. She would certainly be under the least suspicion with the most knowledge about her brother's whereabouts…

Stroking her thumb across his cheek, she struggled with how much to disclose to him now. "I know that you didn't do this to yourself—I'm sorry. I believe you." After a pause, she whispered,
"Will you let me go get the Healer?" Her other hand ran fingers gently through his hair, trying to be mindful of his various, still-recovering injuries. "I'm going to come right back."

Perses stared at Thea for a long time, his thoughts centered almost solely on how he didn't want her to leave. He wanted her to stay here with him, he didn't know what would happen once she left this room. Did other people think he had done this to himself? Admittedly, he had never really cared what other people thought of him (the reason he was in this mess in the first place, as he had been told by his solicitor). But...

But she believed him. Didn't she? He couldn't tell if she was lying or not. His head hurt, his chest ached too and his stomach felt like it had been gutted raw. But with Thea's soft touch, Perses' grip did loosen. His hands unclenched enough that his palms ran up her sides, one extending as far as her shoulder. He hadn't realized he was breathing so heavily until that moment.

Under the shaky premise that she believed him, his hand dropped after his fingers momentarily brushed against her neck. His other hand dropped from her too, but not before reaching to briefly clasp her fingers against his face. He held her hand before letting out a long sigh.

"Be careful," he murmured, his head turning. Her fingers in his hair had stilled him, enough that worry for her was easy to convey. Perses wanted to tell her to come right back, to come back soon, but there wasn't a way for his tired mind to form that without it sounding like an order. Instead, he frowned and tried to steady his chest.
