Perses stared at Thea for a long time, his thoughts centered almost solely on how he didn't want her to leave. He wanted her to stay here with him, he didn't know what would happen once she left this room. Did other people think he had done this to himself? Admittedly, he had never really cared what other people thought of him (the reason he was in this mess in the first place, as he had been told by his solicitor). But...
But she believed him. Didn't she? He couldn't tell if she was lying or not. His head hurt, his chest ached too and his stomach felt like it had been gutted raw. But with Thea's soft touch, Perses' grip did loosen. His hands unclenched enough that his palms ran up her sides, one extending as far as her shoulder. He hadn't realized he was breathing so heavily until that moment.
Under the shaky premise that she believed him, his hand dropped after his fingers momentarily brushed against her neck. His other hand dropped from her too, but not before reaching to briefly clasp her fingers against his face. He held her hand before letting out a long sigh.
"Be careful," he murmured, his head turning. Her fingers in his hair had stilled him, enough that worry for her was easy to convey. Perses wanted to tell her to come right back, to come back soon, but there wasn't a way for his tired mind to form that without it sounding like an order. Instead, he frowned and tried to steady his chest.
