Helena had promised to take Christina to the bookstore, partly as Christina needed a book for school and partly because she wanted more reading materials. But of course Helena being Helena couldn't just walk into a bookstore and not come out with a few books for herself. So after seeing that Christina got the book she needed for school, Helena ensured her daughter was alright looking through books herself. She let her know what section she'd be in and began heading there.
Even with the current crime rate being as high as it was, Helena felt relatively safe letting Christina out of her sight for the time being. It was a bookstore, and Helena wasn't moving all that far away. She could easily get to Christina if the need arose.
As she began to peruse the books in the science fiction section, she wasn't aware of the impending trouble that was brewing in the bookstore. Someone had decided to set the bookstore on fire, wishing to cause more chaos and panic. Possibly also with a side of just because they could do it and they thought it was fun. Nevermind the people inside the building the store.
"Mummy!" Christina said excitedly upon finding an interesting book. She turned and began to head towards Helena had gone, wanting to show her the book and asking if Helena would allow her to get it. Despite not quite being nine years old yet, Christina was already quite the accomplished reader, reading books well above her age bracket. It had been a trait that she'd both inherited from her mother and that her mother also encouraged within her.
However, as Christina was looking for Helena, that's when smoke began to become noticeable in the store. Christina stopped and looked around, a puzzled look on her face.
"Why is there smoke?" She asked to no one in particular.
