Who: Bill Turner and Catherine Chabatier
What: Meetings and deals
Where: Sparrow and Turner's house, Tortuga Island
When: Tonight
Warnings: Billness

Bill had been called by Calliope the night earlier to set up a meeting with her long-time friend and, from what she said boss. That was fine with Bill, who liked meeting new members of their slowly growing group of vampiric allies and interests, if only to know who he had to keep an eye on. He set the meeting for 10pm, hoping it wasn't too early for Catherine, just making sure that his new ward, Agnes, was settled in bed and sleeping when she came by.

He tucked Agnes in at 8pm, he told her a story from his past, full of excitement and daring-do, before setting a glass of water on her bedside table, and he kissed her forehead and bid her good night. He closed her door behind him, leaving the nightlight on for the little girl, and adjourned to the sitting room on the first floor. He picked up a book and started reading, anticipating a knock on his door in two hours. For that time, a book was a perfect distraction, as was his bottle of blood-rum, and the mellow sound of the ocean against the cliffs nearby.

Catherine couldn't help but be struck by the beauty of the place as she landed. It still took her a few moments to catch her breath after taking the damnable portkey, but she'd have tarried even if not. She was a city girl, but vistas could still move her.

Calliope's directions had been specific, though, as to how to find the house, and before long she was standing at the door. It was a trifle early, but hopefully he wouldn't hold that against her. She was dressed nicely, in a fairly professional manner, though there was a hint of cleavage. It never hurt.

Bill heard her before she knocked and stood before she even could get a chance to. What he didn't expect, however, was a deep, dark beauty like her, Thinking only that Calliope's friend would be on par with her wickedness. He stood for a moment, almost enchanted, and then shook his head, "Sorry, it's not often that I'm struck speechless, you'll have to forgive me. Do come in." He opened the door further, and made a sweeping gesture with his hand. "I'm Bill, you must be Miss Chabatier. It's a pleasure."

Catherine jumped as the door opened before her fist landed on it, but had to laugh when she saw the bloke on the other side. He was handsome in a gruff sort of way, clearly older than her, with a voice used to shouting at sea. Calliope had said he was a pirate, and also a flatterer. Still, it was sweet. "Catherine, please. Likewise, I've heard quite a bit about you." She came inside, removing her blazer.

"All true, I assure you, Catherine," Bill said, taking her blazer and hanging it up on the rack nearby. "Would you like something to drink? I've got some nice wine, some blood rum, straight up rum, tea. Your choice." He stood with his hands folded before him, and instead of sizing her up or looking her over, he maintained eye contact. If Calliope had already warned her of how he liked to flirt, he'd like to, just for fun, either prove Calliope horribly wrong, or entirely correct, and at that point, he was leaning towards the latter. Only one struck blind and stupid would not want to at the very least flirt with Catherine.

"Wine would be lovely. Thank you." She could just tell this one was slick, but it had been a while since she'd had a real challenge. It was part of the reason she'd dressed demurely. "I must say, it's quite lovely here. When Calliope told me where you lived, I was curious why so far away, but the view does go a long way toward explaining that."

"It's been home for most of my life," Bill said as he walked to the wine rack, and poured her some from an already open bottle. "We bought th'island itself just recently, after th'city was leveled by an earthquake back in th'early 1900s, though, it's not quite th'same. Not even th'ghosts of home shiver here, now, just us." He held out the glass with a small nod. "Let's get up to my study, I'll start makin' th'talisman for you." He slipped past her, over to the stairs, leading the way past his ward's door to the study at the far end of the hall. The lamps and candles were already lit, while he walked past the rows of shelves to the back of the room, where he immediately went to the roll-top desk. "I'm thinking that you'd be best suited with a ring."

She took the glass with a thank-you, following him into the study, marvelling at its sheer size and composition. When he spoke about the talisman, Catherine couldn't help but be curious. "I have to tell you, if Calliope hadn't vouched for the efficacy of these things, I'd have thought it completely mad. For vampires to be able to day-walk in my ... home world, I suppose?" She chuckled, a genteel sound of isn't-this-all-insane. "For that to happen was unheard of. It's remarkable to me that it's possible." She sipped the wine, a pleased noise escaping her. "Excellent."

"Mm, it's all madness, but there's method to it," Bill said, smiling subtly at the sound she made to the wine, "Here, I'll show you how it works first, then." He pulled off his talisman, handing it to her, "Hold this," he instructed, before he pulled out a small UV pocket light, and turned it on, holding it over his hand, letting the skin sizzle and burn beneath its rays. He grit his teeth and continued, "It's a weak comparison to th'sun, I admit, but I've been walkin' in th'day my whole existence and th'worst I had was a sunburn back when I was fully human, and that was when I wasn't wearin' it." He nodded to her, then, and smirked, "Look, you're not at all harmed, are you?"

He put the light over her hands then, and looked at them, smiling faintly, his tone secretive, "You'd be burning away without my talisman in your hands." He turned off the light and set it aside, taking the talisman back and putting it around his neck once more, tucking it under his shirt. "Mayan secret, that. A rune they had in th'temple of th'Sun, to ward it away with th'greatest power available."

She was fascinated, she had to admit. She was no scholar, but she knew enough about ancient civilizations to remember the Mayans and their basic principle of sun worship. "How utterly extraordinary." Catherine looked up at him, eyes thoroughly diverted by new knowledge, but still a trifle amused. "I'm guessing you heal quickly, otherwise you wouldn't have engaged in such bravado just for me?"

"Rather used t'givin' that speech and show of proof, these days," Bill admitted, smiling modestly, closing his eyes for a moment. He waited for his hand and wrist to heal better, before going back to the desk. "But I heal rather quickly, yes. Flesh wounds heal within minutes or hours, while worse takes longer. Had my eyes taken out at one point, took me months to regrow those." He went to find a setting for a ring, looking over his shoulder at her, more to check what she'd look better with, before choosing a white gold base and a fine sapphire with the talisman already carved into its face, still brilliant despite.

"Do understand that if you want another, for any reason, I'm at liberty to charge for a replacement." He said, "Even for a beautiful women, there is a large charge for more work than absolutely necessary. This should last you at least a hundred years."

"Of course you'll charge." It was just good business. "I'm surprised you don't charge to begin with. But then again, I've always been a bit hard-headed about money." It came from having little of one's own when growing up, of course; it always did.

"I've been lucky when it comes to injuries, myself." She rapped lightly on the nearest wooden surface. "I've been shot twice, stabbed once in the back - that's the only scar I still have - and had a few fingers crushed, which was annoying. But I'd imagine your tales would outdo mine and half again." She chuckled, idly wondering if he'd ever get to see the blade scar. Mere curiosity.

The knocking on wood wasn't lost on him and it actually gave him a chuckle as he started putting the stone in the setting. "Aye, more'n likely. For bein' touted as th'nicest guy so-and-so's ever met, I sure get stabbed a lot." Bill turned around and held out the ring. "try it on, if it doesn't fit, I'll give it a better setting." He'd gotten a good look at her hands, and he wasn't too bad at guessing a ring size these days.

"Th'reason I don't charge f'the first one is simple dealer logic. Give them a taste, and since I'm th'only one in th'business of talismans, I know I've got repeat business."

"Calliope did tell me about some sort of incident involving the both of you. I gather you two have had your differences. I hope she's never actually stabbed you." She took the ring from him and tried it on. It fit her ring finger snugly, and she couldn't help but chuckle. "This fits well, but I'll be curious to see how many looks I get and questions about when's the wedding." She had to admire the handiwork; he clearly knew how to create things that would catch the eye.

"She only slapped me th'once, she's been very kind otherwise, which I hear is out of character for her, but that's Jack's word. While I trust his word about most things, women is strictly not one of those things." He took her hand gently and nodded, "It may be just a bit ostentatious, but I think it suits you." He looked up at her and then smiled, slipping away to offer her a seat. Bill smiled a little, "She told me very little about you, however. What I can tell from first glance is that you're distinctly aware of yourself and your surroundings, that you've lived in Britain for much of your life though you have spent time in France, and you'd be a horrible poker player."

Her accent likely gave away the time in France, any fool could tell she was aware of her surroundings, but the poker playing, that made her wonder. Catherine smiled, taking the seat, crossing her legs demurely and sipping her wine. "I'm French by birth, though I have lived mostly in England since I was twelve. Someone who is aware of their surroundings is equally aware of someone else who's the same way. But why the poker? I normally play vingt-et-un, incidentally." She didn't particularly like that he seemed to be able to read her, but at the same time, it was important information to know that he could.

"Because you have fairly easy tells, Catherine," He said easily as he settled into his own chair, and kicked his feet up on the edge of the table nearby. "Taking your hand, you didn't recoil, but didn't even move a fraction of an inch closer, which makes it obvious that you're comfortable with me, but not much more than you would be with, say, any new friend." He picked up a bottle and poured out a glass of blood rum, sipping it. "It's either you're an awful poker player, or uniquely comfortable with yourself, and to my knowledge, no one creature can be perfectly at ease with themselves."

"Well, that's so." No harm in admitting it. "Calliope, despite how others see her, is uniquely valuable to me, and would not steer me wrong. Therefore I have nothing to fear from you. And while it's true that no creature is completely at ease with themselves, there are very few people who intimidate me." It wasn't necessarily said as a challenge; merely a fact. "Though I must say, the only thing I can possibly divine about you that you've not told me yourself is that a Frenchwoman might keel over and die at your version of her language." The last few words were said in French, with a smirk. His English was accented in a strange way; not quite a normal American pronunciation. There was a lilt somewhere in there, and as a pirate, he'd obviously spent time in the Caribbean. He either spoke French or Spanish, and if he spoke French, it would be Caribbean, stunted and slangy.

Indeed, he knew French, and Spanish, though he was no stranger to proper French. The way he spoke it, however, was as she supposed. He replied in kind, "I've kept most people swayed far easier with my Italian, but French is a close second." He chuckled, and went back to English, "Sorry, rusty at it, only ever time I used French recently was to talk to th'Creole men who had lived nearby in our Louisiana home. Easier to talk t'them in that than it is to speak English. Couldn't understand a word of their English."

"I've actually never been to America. Though I daresay I should remedy that." Catherine answered in English as well. "It's only been the last thirty years or so I that I had enough money to travel, and there were no portkeys in my home world." She smiled, remembering. "I've been all over Europe, and I went to Hong Kong and Tokyo a few times." She had to chuckle. "My Italian is likely lamentable; I've not been back since the late Fifties, but I spent some fond years in Rome." Learning from an old mentor; someone who had taught her so well he'd fallen in love with her and tried to kill her. That part, obviously, hadn't been so fond.

"Well traveled as you are, I'm surprised you haven't made it to America. I was never fond of going far inland, if I can't smell the ocean, I feel utterly lost, but I've made it to Montana for a hunting trip with a couple friends of mine. I've been as far in as Austria, as far as Europe is concerned, though that was not as pleasant a trip as I had expected for it." He paused and then came back into discussion after a sip of the rum. "Been all over th'coasts of th'Americas and Europe, some of Africa, been to China, been to Australia, really, anywhere my Captain wished to go, we went. But mostly, we stayed where he reigned, right here in the Caribbean." He smiled fondly, "It is my heart, my soul."

He then added, "It's been a productive two and a half centuries, and how about your time, Miss Catherine? I'm sure that if you wished to see the sun, you were looking to expand your own horizons."

Catherine remembered Calliope saying he had a lover; well, more than a lover, but Calliope always did have a way of understatement. How very romantic it all seemed, and she said as much. "I've built my company from the ground up, and now that it's in somewhat capable hands, I can have a bit more leisure." Not a lot, mind. She smiled. "I've had little time for romance of that sort, though I'd like to indulge perhaps a bit more."

He smiled at the prospect of Catherine enjoying herself more, and then perhaps, enjoying another person as well. He looked over at her, "There's always time for that, I find, but then again, I'm not a man at the head of a madly corporate business. Simply a grass roots operation." He finished the glass and set it aside, leaning a little closer. "Indulgence is my life, I breathe it and embrace it. And I've yet to have any ill effects from it."

"Perhaps I should make time for it." Her eyes were dark and amused, although she was at least partly serious. "I hear excessive cares and worries cause wrinkles." She finished the wine, setting the glass gingerly on a nearby table. "Calliope looks after me, but I don't think even she can keep age completely at bay." She did age, and she did notice. It was just more slowly than humans.

Bill slipped his hand closer, but only enough to brush his fingertips over her wrist. "You could always take care of yourself, but I know from experience that sometimes, it takes a caring hand of another to truly brush those worries away." His words, while entirely innuendo, were spoken devoid of hinting. He had a knack of stating everything quite literally, while his expression spoke otherwise. At the moment, he was keeping his eye contact with her, and his smile hadn't dissipated, merely turned just the slightest bit more devious.

It made her laugh delightedly. "I hope you're not suggesting my relationship with Calliope ought to be any deeper than that of a trusted friend." Catherine murmured, baiting him because she could. She'd been told her eyes were permanently fixed in a devious sort of smirk. It worked for her.

"There certainly are." She laughed, but it was a deeply satisfied sound, with no mockery implied. "Calliope did tell me you've a soulmate of sorts, though. Really very sweet." She meant that. "However, soulmates tend to get jealous. I'd be worse than a homewrecker if I disrupted that. Wouldn't I?"

That got a warm, easy chuckle out of Bill and he shook his head, "Jack and I have an understanding. Do you really think that a marriage could be functional if it were stifled to the spouse alone? Much less for two and a half centuries? I certainly can't imagine it. And I'd been sleepin' with him since 'fore my wife died. So I'm not particularly up on th'whole monogamy thing to begin with." He rubbed his fingers and thumb over his mustache and beard, smoothing it out a little, but only to hide the nearly bashful grin that came with admitting it.

"I wouldn't know; I'm a child compared to you." Catherine laughed, shaking her head, her lips now pursed in more than a bit of a smirk. "This year is my one hundred ninth birthday. Never been married; not yet." She enjoyed the game too much; between the power trips and the surprising amount of sex that was actually good, why give it up?

As for Bill, why the hell not? They were both willing, he swore she wouldn't get filleted, and he was attractive. And clearly thought she was attractive. "So. What did you have in mind?"

"Well," Bill started, slipping out of his chair and into a knelt position before her, "I'm not really one for well-thought plans, it seems rather stifling, at least for this particular sort of thing." He moved his hand over her knees, his fingers trailing up the skirt in teasing gentleness, for as rough as his palms were.

"It really depends entirely upon what you want."

She held his eyes the entire time, and when he knelt, she laughed softly, an 'aha' sort of noise. "Clever man." She'd have to reciprocate if he did that, but that was all right with her. It was a chance to impress.
