[Open to Park City Residents; Tag Jack Twist]
Who: Carlos Serrano and Jack Twist, Carlos Serrano and [open]
What: Talking to Jack about medical tests, talking to anyone else about any sort of medical advice
Where: Carlos' clinic in Park City
When: Monday afternoon
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

As he had promised Jack, Carlos was in the clinic right after his lunch break. It had been surprisingly busy for the size of the town, Carlos thought, which was encouraging. It meant that people were not worried about coming to see him for immigration reasons - he'd made sure to make it perfectly clear to everyone that he was not looking to deport anyone.

No, he'd dealt with enough of that when he'd been put on the case in California - he didn't need to worry about the same situation happening here when he had control over things. He wore the traditional white coat of a physician and proper attire - it was a change from the Genetics lab. Still, it as a change that he was glad about - helping people had been his main motivation in going into Medicine in the first place.

He sighed, tapping his pen against the edge of the table while he waited for a patient's blood tests. They were well-equipped for a small clinic, able to do basic tests in their own labs (and able to send out more complex exams to a nearby lab that Carlos had found was extremely efficient), which he was thrilled about.

Jack nodded a little at that. "S'fine, 'en. An' th'blood tests." He might seem niave in his acceptance of what was going on, simply because he was. He didn't want to make assumptions about what Carlos wanted to do- even if he had an idea- and as such, just agreed to go along with things, until something raised a flag.

"I'll be testing for things like signs of blood cancer, blood sugar levels, HIV status, and cholesterol." He smiled faintly.

"We have to worry about these things at our age." Yes, he was aware that he was about Jack's age ... so he felt that he could make that sort of comment.

He caught the talk of HIV status, but let it slide, knowing it was his job to suggest these things, not some sort of prejudice. "'F'you say so, Doc, I trust ya. Like I said... I ain't got no clue what I need t'get done, what bein' twenty years inna future an' all."

"It is still about six months ahead for me, if it's consolation. I've been reading medical journals for the past week."

It was true! Aside from that dinner date he'd taken Bobby on.

Jack nodded a little. "S'good t'remember we ain't th'only folk ain't supposed to be here, but s'still weird, an' all that. What wi-" Well, that was an odd though- was having died medically relevant, now? Probably not death by beating, if that's realy what it was. Still, it got a more-than-likely inappropriate chuckle out of him.

Carlos arched a curious brow at Jack when he laughed.

It would be medically relevant if something changed about his body chemistry, but knowing this place -- was it really all that likely?

"It's certainly very odd to be here, knowing that ... my friend at home aren't."

"Sorry," He excused himself with a cough, "Just... strange thought, s'all. Not important," Jack listened to the talk of his friends, nodding a bit. "'Got lucky there, 'th Ennis an' all 'em bein' here, f'now. Only one missin's m'wife, an'... she might be better fof without me, t'be honest."

He nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yes, I understand. I thought that about my wife right up until she outed me and we divorced." They'd still loved each other, of course, but ... well, she'd died.

"And yes, you did. Alma seems like she's got a good head on her shoulders. Does she take after her father?"

He nodded sympathetically at Carlos' story, trying to file away all the information he could. At the question of Alma, Jack smiled a little and nodded. "She's lot like 'im. Pig-headed, knows what she wants, but can be sweet as anythin' t'who she wants. She's a good woman," And Ennis, by extension, was a good man. But he didn't talk outright about it, still stuck in the conventions of his time and place.

"She's going to be working here part-time, at least." He wasn't sure if Alma had told Jack or Ennis about that particular fact. Carlos knew it must have been hard to deal with leaving Bobby under the circumstances she had, so he wanted to help out as much as possible.

"Would you like to make an appointment to come and get those vaccines? I could give the first one for the Hepatitis now, but you will need to come back in a few months for the next one, and again after that."

"Oh, she hadn't said. I was wonderin', 'bout-" About the man's interest in her. But that was rude, so he tried to redirect, letting it fall into silence as he failed.

"Yeah, I can come back, whene'er. I... 'gotta feelin' I'mma be workin' the mountain for mosta the next couple months, anyway."

He nodded. "Very well. If you're up for the blood work, too, I can always have the lab process it and call you when it's ready." No need to have Jack come down here for no reason, after all.

Another nod. He really had no idea what to say to the man, now that all the medical things were taken care of. He wasn't used to small talk, so he instead just sat back and watched Carlos write up the paperwork, still fiddling with his hat.

Carlos smiled. "Ah, all right. I can go and grab the vaccines and come back, if you like. Can I get you anything? You might feel a bit light-headed after the blood test."

"Nah, I'll be fine, Doc," He'd had worse than a few needle pokes. He wasn't worried about that.

He laughed. "I have to ask anyway." He slid out of the room and came back a short time later with the vaccines on a tray.

"I would make small talk, but you don't seem much like the type."

Jack shrugged, looking over the needles with the typical, idle curiousity. "Ain't much t'talk to a'home, between the herds an' Ennis," Which was probably a testament to just how little Ennis spoke, that he ranked under the herd on that.

Carlos nodded. "I understand. I talk mostly genetics now, and that usually makes people fall asleep." He filled the first needle with vaccine.

"As usual, this should sting a little, redness around the area is common, but if it persists more than a few days, come in for me to check."

He looked away as Carlos went to stick him with the needle, but didn't wince as he felt the poke; he just didn't like watching the action itself. "Yeah, well, can't 'magine what I'd talk 'bout, 'could interest you anyway, Doc, so we're fair," That got a little smile, as he sighed once the needle was withdrawn.

On to the second vaccine. "If it's all right with you, I am going to switch arms to take the blood - it'll be less likely to compromise the tests." The vaccines could screw with the results sometimes.

And Carlos couldn't help but smile. "I used to farm, but I can't say I have much experience with livestock. In Mexico with my mother, we owned some property."

"That's fine," He breathed out- maybe a little queasy with the needles, but that was just bad experiences talking.

He hummed a little at Carlos' next statement, glancing over as much as he could, without looking down at the needle, "Oh yeah? What'd y'farm?"

"There we are," he pressed a cotton ball onto the injection site before he headed over to Jack's other side, looking at the other man curiously.

"We can take a break first, if you like." And then Jack was asking him about his childhood.

"We grew mostly corn when I was younger. We had to sell the estate as the children grew up, of course. My mama, she lives in Mexico City now."

Jack saw the look, and shrugged it off, "S'okay. I just had a few bad experiences, in my time. Y'can keep goin', Doc."

He smiled a little at the talk of the farming, not considering it prying, per se, if the man was offering it up. "S'nice. M'Daddy did a lot of hired work, ranchin'. Did rodeo, m'self, while I could. Took up ranchin' when I threw m'knee out. Good f'you, gettin' y'MD an' at, f'I can say."

"Understandable. I think we all have." He smiled, shaking his head and discarding the vaccine's needles in the nearby sharps container. No need to be messy about things, after all.

"And I don't know, I could never have done it without my mother. She was always supportive of all of us." Himself and his brother.

"S'good." He watched Carlos go through the process of setting up to have his blood drawn this time, seeming interested in the gentle way he was handling the process.
