[Open to Park City Residents; Tag Jack Twist]
Who: Carlos Serrano and Jack Twist, Carlos Serrano and [open]
What: Talking to Jack about medical tests, talking to anyone else about any sort of medical advice
Where: Carlos' clinic in Park City
When: Monday afternoon
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

As he had promised Jack, Carlos was in the clinic right after his lunch break. It had been surprisingly busy for the size of the town, Carlos thought, which was encouraging. It meant that people were not worried about coming to see him for immigration reasons - he'd made sure to make it perfectly clear to everyone that he was not looking to deport anyone.

No, he'd dealt with enough of that when he'd been put on the case in California - he didn't need to worry about the same situation happening here when he had control over things. He wore the traditional white coat of a physician and proper attire - it was a change from the Genetics lab. Still, it as a change that he was glad about - helping people had been his main motivation in going into Medicine in the first place.

He sighed, tapping his pen against the edge of the table while he waited for a patient's blood tests. They were well-equipped for a small clinic, able to do basic tests in their own labs (and able to send out more complex exams to a nearby lab that Carlos had found was extremely efficient), which he was thrilled about.

Carlos smiled. "Ah, all right. I can go and grab the vaccines and come back, if you like. Can I get you anything? You might feel a bit light-headed after the blood test."

"Nah, I'll be fine, Doc," He'd had worse than a few needle pokes. He wasn't worried about that.

He laughed. "I have to ask anyway." He slid out of the room and came back a short time later with the vaccines on a tray.

"I would make small talk, but you don't seem much like the type."

Jack shrugged, looking over the needles with the typical, idle curiousity. "Ain't much t'talk to a'home, between the herds an' Ennis," Which was probably a testament to just how little Ennis spoke, that he ranked under the herd on that.

Carlos nodded. "I understand. I talk mostly genetics now, and that usually makes people fall asleep." He filled the first needle with vaccine.

"As usual, this should sting a little, redness around the area is common, but if it persists more than a few days, come in for me to check."

He looked away as Carlos went to stick him with the needle, but didn't wince as he felt the poke; he just didn't like watching the action itself. "Yeah, well, can't 'magine what I'd talk 'bout, 'could interest you anyway, Doc, so we're fair," That got a little smile, as he sighed once the needle was withdrawn.

On to the second vaccine. "If it's all right with you, I am going to switch arms to take the blood - it'll be less likely to compromise the tests." The vaccines could screw with the results sometimes.

And Carlos couldn't help but smile. "I used to farm, but I can't say I have much experience with livestock. In Mexico with my mother, we owned some property."

"That's fine," He breathed out- maybe a little queasy with the needles, but that was just bad experiences talking.

He hummed a little at Carlos' next statement, glancing over as much as he could, without looking down at the needle, "Oh yeah? What'd y'farm?"

"There we are," he pressed a cotton ball onto the injection site before he headed over to Jack's other side, looking at the other man curiously.

"We can take a break first, if you like." And then Jack was asking him about his childhood.

"We grew mostly corn when I was younger. We had to sell the estate as the children grew up, of course. My mama, she lives in Mexico City now."

Jack saw the look, and shrugged it off, "S'okay. I just had a few bad experiences, in my time. Y'can keep goin', Doc."

He smiled a little at the talk of the farming, not considering it prying, per se, if the man was offering it up. "S'nice. M'Daddy did a lot of hired work, ranchin'. Did rodeo, m'self, while I could. Took up ranchin' when I threw m'knee out. Good f'you, gettin' y'MD an' at, f'I can say."

"Understandable. I think we all have." He smiled, shaking his head and discarding the vaccine's needles in the nearby sharps container. No need to be messy about things, after all.

"And I don't know, I could never have done it without my mother. She was always supportive of all of us." Himself and his brother.

"S'good." He watched Carlos go through the process of setting up to have his blood drawn this time, seeming interested in the gentle way he was handling the process.

"You haven't had a doctor like me before, have you?" He was guessing, but. "My mother used to tease that's how she knew I was gay -- light hands."

"Ain't no such thing as light hands, with ranch folk." A beat, as he decided how to continue that, "N'any doctor, decided t'himself I was gay, s'a lot less likely t'try an' make m'comfortable, not wantin' me to think it was a pass or something," There was surprisingly little malice in his voice; it was just how his life had been. Part of the fascination, with this man that seemed so... open about himself.

Jack almost wanted to find that within himself, now, if he dared to believe he could.

"I suppose it's why I wasn't cut out to work on the farm for long," he admitted with a smirk. "If you take anything I do as a pass and you point it out, I will be sure to correct you." After all, he was interested in Bobby ... but admittedly, Jack was nearly the same man physically. Perhaps not emotionally and mentally, but there it was.

"I try not to assume things, anyway. I treat all my patients the same regardless of sexuality, race, or whatever else you can think of. I try to, at least."

Jack smiled, "S'alright, Doc, I ain't mean nothin' against you, by that. Y'good man," He'd already seemed to reach that conclusion, and figured it bore saying, considering Carlos had an interest in his son. They weren't going to have problems, so long as he and Bobby kept from bothering Alma, doing what they wanted.

He shook his head. "No, I take it as compliment." Carlos smiled. He wasn't going to mention Bobby as long as Jack didn't seem bothered by it -- it wasn't something he wanted to pry about.

"This is going to pinch a little," he murmured, sliding the elastic around Jack's arm.

"Had worse done by me, Doc, don't worry," Still, he winced slightly as he felt the prick, that needle slightly larger.

"I don't doubt it." He smiled a little, shaking his head. "It still bothers me a little and I've been blown up, so."

Jack gave him a look. "Blown up?"

He blinked, not meaning that to sound as inappropriate as it did. He thought better than to try and excuse himself, not wanting to draw attention to it, in case Carlos missed it.

He laughed. "Someone did not agree with our monitoring genetic enhancements and that sort of thing - he came into the lab with explosives strapped to him and blew us up. We ... lost our lab coordinator and a friend of mine lost her leg."

After a pause, he carefully removed the full vial of blood and eased the needle out of Jack's arm, holding a cotton ball to it. "It was about a year ago."

"S'awful, man. Sorry t'hear 'at." He seemed much more relaxed, now that the needles were out of the equation.

Carlos capped the vial and labeled it with the appropriate tests.

"It's all right. We are ... dealing." It had been hardest on David - Jill had left, Caroline had died ... and then his father's suicide...

He nodded a little. "F'ere's anything I can do, jus' lemme know, a'ight?" Jack didn't know how many of the affected were here; frankly, he didn't really care. He's offer to help, even if it was just for Carlos' sake.

"I will, Jack. Thank you." He didn't see any of the lab techs from home here.

"And you're finished up. I would hate to keep you from the ranch - I know how demanding it can be sometimes." And exciting.
