Who: Sophie Frost and Gar Logan
Where: Frost Mansion
Warnings: Emoface

Sophie had been in her bed for most of the past.. she'd lost count. She was curled up under the blankets, her head shoved under the pillow. She didn't think she'd ever cried this hard. Not with Quentin, not with Darius, not with the Cuckoos. She'd moderated her use of her diamond form back then, using it when she went to school. Now it was all or nothing. Moderation seemed wrong, somehow. Like it would dishonor their memory, or something. Gar's anger hadn't been misplaced; she was supposed to feel this.

The room was a little chilly. Earlier in the week, she opened the window to leave an entrance for whenever Jon came back. By now she'd forgotten about it, and just hadn't bothered leaving the covers.

Rose. Mom. Esme. Logan. Darius. Celeste, Phoebe, Mindee, Esme. Quentin. She screamed into her pillow, breaking into staccato sobs.

Gar wasn't used to walking everywhere he went. There were some people who hid their powers, who spent their day to day lives embracing normality only to drag out whatever DNA or chance had given them. Not Gar. He ran, he flew, he grabbed attention as only a green person could.

And now he was standing outside what he still thought of as Rose's house, having walked the entire way from the Portkey. It was a bit chilly, and the hoodie he'd worn hadn't been rated for the London chill. He ignored it and knocked on the door.

Rose and Logan would've been able to hear the knock, but Sophie realized Gar was there by feeling his mind nearby. She sat up a little, taking a shaky breath. She frowned, not sure what she wanted to do. He'd sent her flowers, so she knew he wasn't as angry with her now.

The front door was locked. She should go downstairs and let him in. He'd bothered to answer the door when she visited him, after all. She pushed back the covers and placed her feet on the ground. She took a few steps before falling on the ground, collapsing in a heap.

He waited for a while, then knocked again. It was, after all, a big house. Maybe she hadn't heard him. And there was, of course, the distinct possibility that she just didn't want to talk to him, which he couldn't blame her for. "Come on, Soph," he said, mostly to himself. "I'm sorry."

After another minute or so, he started to turn to walk away, but felt something pulling him back. Maybe it was just guilt or sadness or not wanting to lose one more friend. But he walked along the side of her house and spotted an open window where he thought the bedroom was. It'd been weeks since he'd last shapeshifted, but he didn't give it a second thought as he fluttered up to her window.

"Sophie?" He couldn't see her, just a heap of blankets on the floor.

The blankets rustled and moved, and a blonde head came out from underneath. "Gar?" she sniffled. She wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. She should probably be embarrassed, but she was mostly grateful that he was there. "Hey," she said quietly.

She dropped her gaze and set her chin on her knee, trying to hold back another sob.

"Hey." His first instinct was to rush over and help her up, even if they had been fighting. But Gar wasn't quite sure if he was welcome, and at any rate one didn't just rush into a girl's room uninvited. He settled on the windowsill instead and waited for an idea to come to him.

After a moment of awkward silence, he finally took the first step. "Can I come in?"

Sophie lifted her head from where she was crying into the blankets. She nodded to him. "Yeah," she said, sniffling. She wouldn't go back to diamond form. It was her first instinct when someone came in, but she wasn't about to do that now. She took a deep breath then sighed. She pushed away the blankets so she could get up, then realized how cold it was in her room. "Can you close the window?" she asked.

He fluttered into the room and human feet hit the ground. He didn't know how long the window had been open, but by the feel of the room, it had been a while. It explained the blankets, at least, even if it didn't go very far in explaining why she was on the floor.

Gar shut the window and turned around to look at Sophie. Then he quickly looked down. It was hard to tell when Gar was blushing, but his skin was a darker shade of green than usual. It was cold in here, and Sophie, like most girls, didn't wear a very thick shirt to sleep in. One had had a definite effect on the other. "So how are you doing?"

Sophie glanced down and quickly crossed her arms over her chest, covering herself. Way to go, Sophie. "Um." She hadn't really expected company, and she certainly hadn't been thinking of her wardrobe. Blocking out Gar's thoughts right now was definitely a good thing.

She pulled herself over to the bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and wrapping the blankets around her. "Not...good..?" she answered, shifting a little. At least she wasn't bawling, now. Being talked to gave her something to do besides cry. "You know."

"I know." It was awkward in a lot of ways. It didn't help that Gar didn't know what to do with his body, which was unprecedented. In most situations, he would just curl up on Sophie's lap as a kitten, or do something cute as a puppy. He could sit on her shoulder or chase around a string. But now he didn't know if he should be standing or if he should sit on her bed or if he should pull up a chair. He didn't feel comfortable enough to make a decision either way, so he continued to stand.

A moment passed in silence, then he said, very quietly, "I'm sorry." Then, a bit louder, "I'm sorry, Sophie. I shouldn't have snapped at you. I shouldn't have gotten mad. It wasn't my place to yell at you for how you... well, I'm sorry, anyway."

She frowned, shaking her head a little. "No, it's.. It's okay. I probably needed to hear it." She was too shaken up to really say what was 'for the best', but her relief at him being here outweighed any residual anger about the fight.

She glanced down at the bed, then flapped up the edge of the blanket a few times, offering a spot next to her complete with shared blanket privileges. "Sorry I wasn't there for you."

He sat next to her and pulled the blanket tight around them. "It's fine. Let's just say we both suck." Gar was doing it again. Deflecting emotions with humor. It was probably a huge character flaw, he thought. Something like that. He could cheer people up from the outside looking in; he'd done it for Rose often enough, and he'd been there for Sophie, too. But it was so easy to get self-centered in times like these.

Sophie leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder. "Yeah," she said, the humor apparently lost on her. "That sounds about right."

She sighed, closing her eyes. "I don't know what to do," she confessed. "I don't know how to do this. I just. I've just been lying here all week. I haven't even brushed my teeth. Gross." Thankfully, she was facing down instead of breathing on Gar.

Gar winced a bit to know she'd been there all week long feeling bad. He'd assumed that she'd been in diamond form until recently, which was part of the reason he'd taken so long to apologize; he was afraid that it'd just end up in another fight. And, if he were to be completely honest with himself, he was ashamed of how he'd acted. To know that she'd been as miserable as he was for the past week didn't cheer him up like he thought it would.

"I don't know what to do either," admitted Gar, "but we've gotten through this kind of thing before." He would have continued, but Sophie's stomach let out a noise not unlike a very angry goat, which gave Gar pause. "Well, that's a tension breaker," he said.

Sophie covered her face, blushing. "Agh!" There was just the tiniest hint of a smile on her lips. She really hadn't been taking care of herself. She should have just made her stomach diamond.

"There's no tension," she said, elbowing him a little. "There's sadness and everything. But don't be tense. Don't think that stuff, please. It's okay. We both probably needed time.." Something like that. "No tension. Okay?"

Gar would have accepted forgiveness. He'd only really hoped for forgiveness. Even just continuing to be mad but not actively wanting to kill him would have been acceptable. But to have Sophie acknowledge his fears and dismiss them in one go was kinder than she had any right to be.

"I can make you something to eat. I imagine you've never had to cook before." He nudged her back. "What do you think of deep fried bacon?"

Sophie was trying to regain some sense of normality. Her family was gone, her boyfriend was in outer space.. Gar was all she had, and she didn't want things to be weird between them.

She wrinkled her nose. "I'm not really a 'deep fried anything' type of person." She smiled a bit. "Food does sound good, though. Maybe I can powder my nose while you cook. Just promise not to burn anything down." She needed to spend some serious time in the bathroom if she was going to be fit to be around people.

"Sounds like a plan." Gar kissed Sophie on the top of her head and left for the kitchen. Doing so meant passing Rose's room, which made him stop for a brief moment before forcing himself onward. He hopped over the banister rather than take the stairs, as if forcing himself to be jovial. He was trying to actually accept his negative emotions and not just laugh them off, but he still wasn't going to let sadness win.

Logan was--had been--a man of simple tastes, and Emma was a woman of class and distinction, so the kitchen had a strange mishmash of food. Cheap beer and frozen pizza occupied the same refrigerator as a '68 Bordeaux and imported cheese. It was moldy, but for all he knew that was a good thing. Regardless, Gar settled on making pancakes. It was the middle of the afternoon, but she probably hadn't eaten today anyway.

Sophie smiled up at him when he kissed her forehead. It was good to have him here. She disappeared into her bathroom, turning on the hot water. Sophie didn't take quick showers. She liked the steam, and now she could really use some relaxation.

After about a half hour, she was out of the shower and toweling her hair dry. She wasn't terribly pleased with her reflection, but Gar was sort of waiting on her. Is it ready? she asked telepathically, waiting for a reply before hopping out of his brain. She probably shouldn't do her hair and makeup if the food was getting cold.

"Gah!" Sudden psychic messages weren't something he was used to. Emma mostly did it to threaten him, which was different. "They're in the--" he began, before realizing that Sophie had contacted him with her mind. They're keeping warm in the oven, he thought to her.

It said a lot about his state of mind that he was talking to someone who, for all he knew, was in the shower, and he was not thinking about her naked.

Sophie pulled on a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Thanks. Ten minutes? She wasn't going out, so she didn't need to go overboard. She just wanted to dry her hair. She didn't bother styling it or anything. Once it was mostly dry, she ran a quick coat of mascara over her lashes and slipped on some lipgloss.

She was starting to feel better. She was starving, but it was probably a good sign that she felt like eating again. She pulled her slightly damp hair back into a ponytail and started down the stairs. Hopefully Gar hadn't been timing her, because she might have gone over ten minutes. She joined him in the kitchen. "Hey. Thanks for cooking. It smells good."

It was a little strange to see Sophie with her hair in nothing but a ponytail, but compared to the mess it had been before, it was an improvement. "It is good. I'm very talented, you know." He put a few more pancakes on her plate than she might normally have asked for; she probably hadn't been eating properly, and she needed to get on that.

His comment had been his general frivolity rather than the dark humor of recent weeks, which might have meant he was approaching normality. But approaching it wasn't the same as being there, and Sophie seemed to be at about the same point he was. Which meant that she would probably be able to offer a response when he asked, "Are you okay?"

She poured some fruit-based syrup over her pancakes and cut them into bite-sized pieces. She was quick to start eating, but tried not to look too rushed or crude as she did it.

She paused when he asked the question, lowering her fork. "I...don't know," she said carefully. "Not really. But better than I was." She frowned a little, looking down at her food. "I just.. I always wanted a family. Maybe it wasn't the most normal family, but when I was most alone, they were there. Now..."

Until that point, part of Gar's problem had been that he couldn't quite relate. He's lost his parents when he was five; he barely remembered their faces. But now he realized that she was only seventeen (or three, or something) and so she got to meet her family only when she was practically done growing. She'd had to construct a family out of bits and pieces.

That was definitely something Gar could identify with.

"Look, I know I haven't been... the most supportive person lately. Like we said. We both kind of suck. But as far as I'm concerned, you're my family." Gar gave her a small sort of smile. "It's not the best situation. One or both of us might disappear. But as long as we're here together, you've got me."

Sophie gave him a small, genuine smile. Gar probably understood family better than some of Sophie's blood relatives. By the end of it, Esme and the Cuckoos definitely had a warped sense of 'family'. When Darius had been a douchebag, Gar had been there for her, and known exactly what she needed. He ranked way higher on the 'Good Brother' scale than Darius ever had.

"I know," she said softly. "Thanks. For reminding me." She was really glad he was here.

"Any time." Gar really did understand better than most people would. A dysfunctional mess of friends was practically his definition of family.

"While we're still talking about serious things, I'll ask this now. And then I'll change the subject and talk about something silly. Have you decided what you're going to do about... everything?" The house, school, the world she lived in, Gar wasn't sure what he was talking about, but Sophie might have.

Sophie frowned slightly, thinking on that. "I don't know. I'm going to finish school. I hadn't really thought farther than that." She gnawed on her lower lip. "Do you think I could stay with you for a little while?" She wasn't really thinking of what to do with the house, she just knew she didn't want to be alone.

"I'm pretty sure Jon is on Mars." It was a little off-topic.. Or was it? More things that she had to make decisions about it.

It wasn't exactly a surprise that Sophie would want to stay with him, but the bluntness did throw him off for a second. He rallied quickly, though. "Of course you can stay with me." Gar had a three bedroom apartment for what was very possibly a terrible reason: because he'd come across it, and in the New York housing market, a three bedroom in Manhattan was a bit like a swimming pool in the desert with a fully stocked bar.

"Who--oh, your boyfriend? Why's he on Mars?" The underlying question was why isn't he here with you but he wasn't about to ask it.

She smiled a little and nodded. "Thanks." She took a small bite of pancake, chewed and swallowed. "I'll need someone to feed me," she said with more lightness than she'd managed in a while.

"Yeah, boyfriend." She shrugged. "His mom and sister disappeared, too. Probably the same time as mine." It was all weird and sorta creepy, so many people being wiped out at the same time. "He left me a note." She understood all that. She'd distanced herself, too. So had Gar. Needing space was natural.

"And his ex was named Mars."

Gar smirked. "That's why I'm so popular. Culinary skills. Get used to pancakes, by the way, because I don't know how to cook much else." Normalcy was still pretty far off, he knew. But it seemed like an attainable goal, at least.

"His girlfriend was Mars? That's kind of weird, to be honest. But my ex-girlfriend is a reformed demoness whose father and brothers strive to conquer the world and remake it in their terrifying and unholy image. So I suppose I can't judge."

"I'd better grab the number for that Chinese delivery place when I'm packing," she teased. She normally didn't have Gar's tendency of coping with humor. She really did think he was helping, though.

"Sailor Mars, or something. She had magic. She disappeared too. Around the time Quentin died, I think." Sophie pursed her lips, a little less than pleased about the whole thing.

"He'll be back. Some people grieve together, some people go it alone. Some people go to Mars. That metaphor got away from me at the end, but he's probably missing you, too." Odds were good that he didn't even know that Sophie's family had disappeared. Gar grimaced slightly. That would be an awkward conversation. He was glad not to be in Jon's shoes right about now.

"I'm going to have to clean out the spare room," he said, changing the subject slightly. "Have you ever met my roommate? She's pretty sweet. Just don't accept anything she offers you to eat unless it came out of a box. She's... she's a weird one."

"Yeah," she said, though she wasn't entirely convinced that everything would be all right. Maybe he was on the moon, or Pluto, or wherever. There wasn't really a point to worrying about it now. Sophie shrugged. She wasn't even really in that much of a hurry for him to get home, now. She kind of wanted to put off the awkward.

"You don't have to. I can do it." She smiled a bit, shaking her head. "I don't think I have."

"You have plenty to do without shoveling my crap out of a back room. It's okay, I was only storing stuff in there to give the illusion of being relatively neat to--" To Rose. "--people," he finished lamely. "But you should always be yourself, Sophie. See, that's me being familial. I'm giving you an aesop."

He didn't know how to describe Starfire aside from her weirder habits. It said something of his life that "orange, flying, superstrong, green-eyed laser girl," was normal, but "drinking mustard" was a bit off.

Sophie abandoned the rest of her pancakes. She was full, and feeling more sane. She stood up, taking her plate to the sink. "Oh, just don't want me to see all your embarrassing stuff, huh?" She shrugged. "I can help. After you hide all the porn."

She put down the plate and then turned to wrap her arms around Gar in a hug. She would probably be stealing a lot of those in the weeks to come. "I'm glad you're here," she said. Here the house and here the dimension.
