Who. Doug and Carrie
What. Finding Doug! Yay!
When. Late tonight
Where. NYC

Carrie had been taking notes on costume ideas when she'd heard the computer beep. It'd been a quiet enough noise that she hadn't lifted her head right away to turn to the screen. But then she stopped, her pen stilled in her hand and she faced the laptop.

Brow furrowed, Carrie typed at the keyboard for a few seconds. And then she went completely still. "Holy shit," she murmured to herself. "Doug."

Her fingers flew across the keyboard and she tried not to get her hopes up too high. It was entirely possible with the Joker on the loose that this was just some elaborate trap. Or someone else with the name of Doug Ramsey, with the right physical description had just happened to pop up in a NYC hospital. But the longer she sat in front of the computer, the more the facts checked out and the more real it seemed.

Carrie got dressed quickly and stole some gear. She could hide her utility belt under her clothes and a line gun in her pocket. She was out the door in a few minutes, dialing Nightwing and leaving him a message as to where she'd be. Then she was on her bike and rolling down the street, barely paying attention to the rules of the road. When she approached the hospital, she slowed and checked the premises out. It looked clean.

Trying to keep her hopes low, Carrie entered the building via line gun. She jumped into the right room. And peered down on a familiar sleeping form. "...Doug?"

Doug had been sleeping, one more long sleep from checking out, which they had finally grudgingly told him he could do at any time. But steps, however quiet, sent his mind scrambling for consciousness and his eyes snapping open. The form near him made his eyes widen, and then he grinned as he raised his hands to rub sleep-affected eyes.

"Hey, there, Lady of the Night. Nice to see you."

His voice was a little more confident, even in sleep, and his eyes warmer, than they had been before he left. A lot had happened and as he smiled up at her, he nodded. Carrie. Now things would be better.

"Hey," Carrie's face was blank, at first. Her voice was no more than a whisper. The lights in the room were dim and there were nurses hanging out just a few doors down. She didn't want to risk getting caught and kicked out.

It took everything she had to keep her voice down and not jump on top of Doug and embrace him. "You... I thought you were dead or kidnapped or..." She trailed off, mumbling slightly. "You're..." a grin, brighter than any smile she'd smiled the past week started to shine on her face, "How? And what? Dude!"

"Dude!" She repeated the word, almost laughing. "I could kick your ass or hug you right now. And I'm not a hugging person." Her voice was slightly unsteady. Carrie had needed good news. Finding Doug was probably one of the best things that could have happened to her.

He smiled, to see that smile, and nodded.

"It started during the AU weirdness. I got, literally, the shock of my lives. And everything kind of blurred from there. A lot has happened in the time since and I was kind of out of it the whole time. I am sorry I worried you. I didn't mean to. I didn't even get back to the forum until... much more recently. And even then not with time or brain to comment."

He smiled shyly, eyes full of tiredness and energy, both at once.

"Give me a few days to get my feet back under me more firmly and you can kick my ass all you want. Hugging I will accept at any time."

He blushed a little.

"It's really good to see you. My brain has only barely been waking up these last few hours, but apparently, other than needing to rest and eat a lot, I have a clean bill of health."

Carrie nodded. Somewhere in the middle of his story, she brought a chair that had been against the wall close to his bed and sat. "I knew about the shock. I tracked you up to the point where you left me in charge of the business - which I've been running but you can have back, if you want." Her hand dangled restlessly at her side and bunched into a fist. For a moment, she almost grabbed his hand but then stopped herself. Carrie wasn't touchy.

"I'm really going to injure you. When you're well enough." She smirked. And noticed something different in the way he spoke. Doug wasn't as... nervous. It was strange. "What happened to you?" She asked.

"I'm sorry."

He winced as he watched her, mind's eye cataloging everything. He was more aware of his power than ever.

"I got connected to the electromagnetic field of the earth, all of it. I... saw everything. Every pattern, every life force, every... thing. And It kind of swept me up and away. After laying me out for 25 hours."

He shook his head.

"I was in like a fog, clear as a bell and yet... somehow always disconnected. I had all these plans, ideas, things to do, and build, and yet most of the time, thinking about anything else was... distant, like a dream."

He smiled up at her, regretfully.

"I remember vague things along the way, but... I am sorry, Carrie. I never would have left like that if I had been thinking, if I had not been... whatever I have been these last few weeks."

He also waved a hand.

"And the business is yours. I have a feeling I will be busy. And I have a lot to show you... when I have rested a few more days."

"Huh," Carrie leaned forward a little. There was a dorky little part of her that wanted to understand what he'd done, how he'd done it. But she knew funky mutant powers were probably beyond her. "Weird," she said eloquently.

"It's fine." Carrie shrugged. "You had things. Next time, just leave a note and we'll be good." She raised a brow then. "What do you have to show me?"

His eyes twinkled.

"The Grotto. And trust me, the wait is worth it. There are presents down there."

He nodded, slowly, pushing himself up some.

Curiosity shone in Carrie's eyes, but she held in most of her questions. She could wait a day or two. But the way he spoke and the look in his eye made Carrie wonder what exactly he'd been doing while away.

"When are you getting out of here? Do you need a ride or something?" A pause. "The Joker's loose in the city. It's probably a good idea to get out of here as soon as you can. Just in case."

He smiled at her, almost bouncy in his bed, but threw back his sheets to show he was in a full length gown at her question.

"I can check out any time. I was going to wait until tomorrow, since I did not have any help here, and had not thought, you know, yet, to call. But if you are willing to drive, I would like to go home, now."

"Can you take a motorcycle ride right now or do you want me to get a cab?" She looked over him, a little doubt in her eyes. She didn't want to take a sharp turn and end up making him feel worse. "I can get you home either way," she added quickly. The idea of getting him home pleased her much more than having him sitting in a hospital.

He shook his head.

"A cab, or I can call the car."

He grinned at her and pointed at the side table, straightening up slowly, his grin faltering as he concentrated. His body was noticeably short of muscles and thin, very thin, right now, but he still had more confidence, or felt like it.

"In there, top drawer, is my stuff, including the remote. Somehow, when I left the Grotto, my weird brain-ness made me bring it."

His grin came back.

"Do you like to drive sedans?"

Carrie glanced Doug over once. "You're sure you can get out, right? You're not going to pass out?" Normally she'd be more delicate, but she decided it would suck to have Doug back only for him to pass out once at home. Still, she walked over to his belongings and hauled them over to him.

"You have a remote control car?" She smirked, inspecting the remote. It was fancier than what she expected. "My bike's the same way." A pause. "I can handle a sedan, I think." She almost laughed.

He smiled slowly, still tired, but wanting out. He was glad she had come. he had no doubt, and never had, really, that she would find him. She was just that good.

"I wont. As long as we go slow, I will be fine."

He nodded to her and started pulling out clothing, then grinned up at her.

"If you will kindly turn around, I will slip into these?"

He kept talking as he fished out the remote.

"It just turns it on, or off, and calls it to center on here, activating a GPS guided, lights oriented cruise control. Fifth generation threat board allows it to avoid accidents. So far."

He offered a wry grin.

"It's a very special sedan."

"Oh!" Carrie raised a hand and brought it before her eyes. Then, she turned and stared at wall. "Sorry." There was a clear grin in her voice.

"Sounds cool," she said, stretching. "Our bikes work on a similar model. It's really great to watch people stare at a bike that's riding itself down the street." For a moment, she rocked on her heels. "You want me to meet you downstairs? Don't think the nurses will be happy seeing me here. I think breaking and entering is frowned on around here."

He chuckled.

"No worries."

He skinned out of the robe and into the clothing. Truth to tell he would not have minded her watching, but he did not want her to think he was trying to be inappropriate. Event eh thought of that made him blush. She was his friend, and involved, even married, and he would never presume to make a move on her. He respected her too much.

When he was done, he levered himself up.

"Done."

He slowly slid his stuff into pockets then nodded.

"Nah. They can deal with it. This whole wing was refurbished last week by a grant from Cypher Industries. They are very polite."

He nodded.

"The car should be downstairs soon. We can take our time in the elevators, if you don't mind?"

Carrie grinned. This new, not nearly as shy as he used to be Doug was interesting. "Alright," Carrie said. She turned slowly and then headed to Doug's side. "If you need to lean..." she offered. Carrie looked tiny, but was surprisingly strong for her height and weight.

He nodded and laid a hand on her arm, not quite leaning, but not quite walking completely on his own as he walked with her. They had to stop for him to sign papers and the nurses looked utterly disapproving of this strange woman sweeping their patient off. Doug stood firm, and led the way, doing his best to not let his weakness show as they made their way into the elevator.

Once inside, he rested against one wall.

"I hate hospitals. As a kid I spent entirely too much time in them. I was always the kid who was slower, weaker."

He shook his head.

"Never got used to having to go to them."

Carrie'd done her best, while Doug had signed himself out, to look completely innocent. She'd avoided the eyes of surprised nurses, who'd probably been wondering where the hell she'd come from. Slightly self conscious, her hand moved to one of her back pockets, where her line gun was hidden.

Once in the elevator, she raised a brow. "That sucks. Sorry." There wasn't much else that could be said. Carrie could empathize with being small and weak, but it sounded lame to try and compare their experiences.

The doors slid open and Carrie held out her arm for him to take. "Your car awaits, sir," she said, trying for some weak humor.

He chuckled anyway, and nodded his head in his best bow, and took her arm, walking slowly with her toward the doors. Outside, to the side in one of the few spots available, a simple gray sedan waited. He fished out the remote and his a blue button as they approached the the doors unlocked. The engine was running quietly and Doug smiled, eyes running over it.

It looked just like he had imagined it would.

"If you will take the driver's seat, madame?"

From outside, the dash and controls looked normal, but the moment the driver sat down, the truth resolved. protected by sight mechanics, the real control board was something out a a race car and computer geek's dream, with controls and monitors far more in place in a spaceship than a car.

As Doug slid into the passenger's seat and secured himself, he grinned.

"It's a very special car, designed for someone to use when needed for speed, backup, and quick analysis in the field. As well as a few other tricks."

Carrie had waited until Doug had begun to slide into his seat. Then she walked across and got into the driver's seat. Once the door shut behind her, she blinked. "Whoa. Sweet." Carrie looked around, admiring the tech. "This is like a wet dream I once had." It was so different from the inside. It had looked do humble from the outside and was pimped from this vantage point. "This is almost like... like the Batmobile back home," she smiked. "It looks like a rock on the outside but it's gorgeous and..." she tested the wheel and her fingers flew over a small keyboard. "This is awesome."

He blushed bright purple at her words.

Argh!

But he grinned as she admired the car, and relaxed, settling back in his seat more.

"I'm glad you like it because I am hoping you will use it, on occasion. It needs a good driver, one who is worthy of it in skills and brains. That person is you."

"Shucks," Carrie said, only slightly distracted by the shiny things. Almost against her wishes, she was "ooh"ing and "ahh"ing at monitors.

Carrie put the car in drive. She almost put it in turbo but then remembered, at the last moment, that Doug was still on the mend. "You want me to drive you around or something?" She asked.

He was resting back on the seat, watching her with a grin.

Carrie took a turn. "In and out of duty?" She sounded confused. "Seriously?" For a moment, she fell silent and thoughtful. To be in duty, she'd have to be fighting crime. Carrie thought she might not be on the streets for a while. "I..." she nodded, "Maybe in a while."

He fell silent for a moment.

Carrie picked up a little speed. It helped her to not focus on the bad. "The Joker showed up," she said, voice even. "Jason got exploded." Quickly, before he could react, she added, "He's alive. And going to be okay. But the Joker exploded the Times building, Jase works at the Times building. Then Cass went after the Joker and..." She almost wanted to laugh. "She's in the hospital with Jason now. Healing."

Carrie fell silent and took another turn. They approached Doug's place. "And then after we turned the Joker in, Batman disappeared. Not poof disappear. But..." Her voice was extremely even, her eyes didn't leave the road. "According to the papers, Bruce Wayne died in a plane crash." She wasn't sure how bitter she sounded, but she did taste something sour in her mouth.

Her flinched, then shook his head All of that? What-- so much had happened, and he did not even know it. This sucked!

He sighed as he looked at her.

"I'm sorry. It sounds... I don't even know what to say."

His hands twitched and he shook his head again.

"You... I'm sorry I worried you on top of all this. You didn't need it, no doubt."

He felt tired, all of a sudden. The joy of seeing her again, of all the memories in his head, of new things to share, kind of dimmed in that tide.

"If you just want to drop me off and come back another time, it's cool. You must have a lot on your mind. But... anytime you want, this place is always open to you."

He nodded.

"Don't apologize," Carrie said. "Really. You couldn't help what happened." She put the car into park and kept her hands on the wheel.

"I spent the week after..." She stopped then. Deep breath and then she started over. "Bruce left us. I haven't really talked about it with anybody. But he left. He chose to leave." She nodded. " The week after, I spent almost every day in bed. Thinking and sleeping and being upset. I'm tired of thinking. So," she turned to look at Doug, "I'll take you up and make sure you're okay before going."

He nodded.

"Okay."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Come on in."

He slipped out and moved, slowly but surely, toward the house, fishing through his pockets until he found the key. Into the lock it went, and then the door opened soundlessly, lights coming on inside.

"Good evening, Douglass, welcome home. Good evening Carrie, welcome to the House."

Doug colored as he stepped in.

"Evening, Jeeves. IS all in working order?"

"All is functioning and online, Douglass."

Doug nodded and turned to her, motioning her in.

"Ah, welcome to the house. I don't remember all I did, but I think it is pretty, ah... interesting."

Inside, it was all quiet coloring. Simple creams and reds, alongside browns and brief splashes of other colors painted a warm setting. The furniture was not lavish by a long shot, merely functional in most places.

"Um... would you like something to drink?"

He felt awkward, as he stood there. Guesting was something he knew nothing about.

"Of course. I have vague... flashes. Like the car, and that there is a passage from here to the Grotto and that there is more down there I wanted to show you, and... flashes of like things I saw on monitors?"

He rubbed his forehead, shaking his head and wincing. His head hurt, and had for awhile. Everything seemed so confusing and yet so clear. This was highly annoying.

"But I am glad you are here."

He smiled at her, then looked around, face screwed up as he thought.

"I think there ares pare keys around here somewhere".

He was sure they were not in the room stand, but they might be in the kitchen... maybe? He groaned and shook his head.
