Demelza was running on an adrenaline high and saw no end in sigh to her energy. The office was in a scurry to her, people whirring around and papers flying half-hazardly, but it was only happening in her little corner of the office. Being a junior writer for the paper meant she didn't get her own space, but she did get a desk which was good enough in her opinion. She wasn't spoiled or high class, not even here, and could easily adjust.
The rest of the office was actually pretty dead as people were already going home. A few dedicated employees and interns were still around as well as one or two writers who hadn't finished something. Demelza was writing as quickly as she could with her quill scratching against the parchment in her excitement, dripping stray bits of ink here and there. It only took her a few more minutes to finish the article and file it with the right person and then she collapsed back into her chair.
After letting out a sigh, her face exploded into a grin. Working generally came first for her and she was serious about getting everythign finished. Now that she was done, she could relax, even though relaxing for her was just the opposite of others' definitions.
Jumping up, feeling too restless to sit anymore, she took off her witch robe and stuffed it into her backpack, pulling her hair down from the tie and letting the brown tendrils fall around her shoulders. Her genes meant that her hair was always stick straight, but she never minded that too much. Still feeling like her blood was rushing in her veins too fast to handle, she jogged to the floo, apologzing to several people she accidentally bumped into.
The floo took her to Devlin's and she stepped out of the fireplace and turned to the hooks hanging on the wall next to it. She knew he hated a mess and she could respect that even if it never bothered her (her own place was a disaster, but he rarely came there, if ever). With the backpack hung up, she found him and lept, letting her knees fall on either side of his legs so that she was straddling his lap, the grin still splayed goofily on her face. Demelza hadn't bothered checking her appearance before leaving work and thus still had a black mark across her nose and cheek and her hair had bits of ash in it - and she had no idea she smelled like smoke.
"An entire BUILDING exploded today. Right in front of me. I mean, it was already on fire when I got there but then it hit gas or something - there was definitely something illegal in one of the rooms - and it all just BLEW. UP. And it was purple of all colors. I never thought an explosion would look like that..." She talked too fast and ran out of breath but she was still hyped up and her palms fell on his chest. "Merlin," she added, her eyes too excited and active. Could a person explode? She felt like she might. But that had to be from the news she was covering mixed with seeing him right away.
Devlin...well, when things were good, he excited her even more. He was completely gorgeous and she was in love with him, had been for years. And there was something more than all of that. He'd woken up a part of her she didn't even know existed and while she knew that it wasn't a very good part of her, she knew that it worked for them. He was her exception to everything: her morals, her otherwise complete niceness, her judgement. She couldn't ever tell why he was her exception to it all and she hated even trying to explain to other people that he was different, but he was. And that was the end of the story as far as she was concerned.
