W H A T: The frighteningly scary first meeting.
R A T I N G: E for everyone!!
S T A T U S: Thread // Complete

There was a tightness in her chest that she wasn't exactly comfortable with, but it was a pain she knew would not go away. If anything it was bound to get worse before it got better. Asteria didn't handle new situations very well and this most certainly was a new situation. She didn't meet new people often, she preferred her safe, adorable, and well mannered circle of friends. There was no honest reason for why she was as shy as she was, but she had learned to live with the conditions a long time ago. As she walked from her apparition point, she took in several breathes in an attempt to loosen the tight grip on her chest. If she continued to remind herself that this would be nothing like being sorted into her house, there was a good chance that she just might make it to the planned meeting.

She had a sinking sensation that she was running late, particularly since she had spent a good hour going through her extensive closet. Clothing had been thrown to the side, the house elves were frustrated beyond a reasonable level, and she had been completely stumped. It wasn't that she was trying to look good or impress Davies...she simply didn't know what he meant by casual. What was casual for someone who didn't have their clothes specially ordered? In the end she'd simply grabbed a summer dress with a light cardigan. That was casual...right?

Now that she was approaching the door to the cafe, she could feel her nerves start to pick up. I shouldn't do this.....this was a bad idea! The thoughts of doubt were simply invading her mind despite her best efforts to keep them out. Even as she reached for the door handle, she had to fight against the urge to turn and head back to the apparition point. It took a strong internal shove to get her inside the door, but once she had managed that there was no turning back. She would have to go through the meeting now. She'd look ridiculous if she simply stepped in, froze on the spot, and stepped out. With a hesitant step forward, her eyes scanned the room searching for some sort of sign that Roger was present. She wasn't exactly a Quidditch fan, so he wouldn't be familiar.

"Well," Roger paused, trying to make sure that he wasn't going to risk offending her when he made his point. "you've only just recently graduated, right? Everything takes time to climb the ranks, but if you really want to do it, I'm sure nothing will stop you."

"Would you want to stay here in England, or go abroad?" Roger asked curiously, nodding again at one of the waiters to signal that he could bring the menus over. Roger had travelled all over the world, and had enjoyed most of his trips. Needless to say, there were some countries that he preferred over others, but Roger was quite sure that he wanted to settle down here in England. He couldn't picture raising a family in a foreign country, and though he was quiet about it, that was his primary goal for life.

"Unfortunately, all I have is time." she responded, with a small frown. She wasn't exactly the most patient person, but she did work hard at keeping her impatience under wraps. It wouldn't do to go to work and start pressing for a job that she was no where near receiving...no matter how badly she wanted it or how convinced she was that she could handle it. There was a difference between self-confidence and being cocky.

It was a good question; whether or not she wanted to stay in England. It actually took her a moment to respond. "I'd rather stay in England and travel when I have to rather than being a permanent resident at an embassy." It wasn't that she was particularly fond of England, but it was familiar. She knew policies, legislations, geography, social groups and most importantly that's where the majority of her family was. It didn't make sense to leave the comfortability of her home in order to relocate simply to do the same job.

As much as she felt comfortable in their current direction of conversation, she directed it back to him once more. "What about you? If I'm not mistaken the career span of a Professional Quidditch player isn't particularly long, not to mention the possibilities of injuries. Have you put any thought into what you would wish to do afterward?"

Roger nodded in agreement and understanding as Asteria explained her reasons for wanting to stay in England. Though it was still quite early, it was a relief for him that she wanted to stay close to home. They were going to have to figure out compatibility, since the Ministry obviously wasn't joking about this pairing thing. So far there wasn't anything glaring that suggested that they couldn't make this work.

Though Roger had always known he wanted to play professional Quidditch, his mother had always made him think of alternatives. But since he'd actually made it, some of the possibilities he'd thought up as a child no longer applied. "Assuming I don't get a premature injury and make it in the league for as long as I can...I'd probably become a coach," Roger admitted with a shrug. He didn't really want to think about the end of his Quidditch career, it was a little depressing. That being said, he was ready for it if it did come.

Quidditch again? He must really like the game... Then again, she assumed one would have to in order to play the game professionally. It didn't make much since to put so much effort into something you didn't truly love. She had a feeling, she might very well be taking a crash course in the sport simply to understand what it was he was talking about.

"Perhaps coach the team you currently play for, or did you have another in mind." she asked, the title of Magpies still floating around in her head without a place to associate it with. If she remembered correctly, she could vaguely recall her brother mentioning something about tornados...though she couldn't recall if that was a team, a broom, or whether or not he had actually been discussing sever weather patterns.

"I've been extremely blessed to be with the Magpies for this long," Roger said earnestly, a small smile on his face as he said it. "Though I was made Captain, there's no guarantee that I won't be traded sometime in the future, so I'm not entirely sure what team it would be for. Whichever one would take me... Even the Canons." A smirk spread across Roger's face as he said the last bit, though he realized that the joke was going to be lost on her.

"A career in Quidditch is rather tumultuous," Roger admitted, picking up his menu, despite the fact that he could recite all of it from memory. "Only the future will tell."

"The Canons...Cannons," she frowned at the name, saying it softly to herself. Bells were going off but it took her several moments to understand why her internal warning system was going off over a silly Quidditch team. When realization sunk in, her nose wrinkled in distaste. "Aren't they the ones with that horrible shade of orange?" she asked, desperately hoping that she had been mistaken. "I'm not going to any of the games if I have to wear that colour."

To someone outside of the conversation, that statement would have sounded extremely funny...but not to her. Orange? No, she didn't think so. What a horrible though, indeed. She completely missed the fact that he had been joking or the fact that she'd all but said she would be going to Quidditch games with him.

Roger's eyes went as wide as saucers when Asteria started complaining about the color orange. A smile quickly spread across his face and he chuckled slightly before explaining, "I also happen to bear a strong hatred for the color orange. Particularly the shade of the Canons."

But beneath his mirth at her reaction, Roger was slightly shocked. Asteria was planning to come to his games? None of his girlfriends had ever bothered to come for more than one game, and the thought that Asteria would sit through a game for him was actually quite flattering. She obviously knew next to nothing about the game, and probably wasn't all that interested in knowing more, so it was pretty significant to him.

"Anything on the menu look good to you?" Roger asked, almost immediately adding, "if not, we can go somewhere else."

Okay, she could handle that. No orange, was good....though if one team was allowed to wear such a horrid shade, she was almost afraid of what the other teams were allowed to wear. Was there not some woman in charge of all that? If not, there very well should be. Leave colour coordinating to men and look what you get.

She was pulled away from her internal monologue by the the question of the menus. In all honesty she had not even glanced at the menu. She'd been much too concerned with not wearing orange. It was, after all, a serious issue. Picking up the forgotten menu she glanced over the different items, many of the descriptions sounded wonderful, but she still wasn't sure.

"Everything looks great." she assured him. There was no point trying to find another place when they were already here. "You seem to know this place quite well, any suggestions."

"I've got rather simple tastes," Roger admitted, looking down at the menu and spotting some of his favorites. "The duck is good... So is the salmon and the halibut... Crab cakes... Strawberry salad..."

"And the deserts are to die for," Roger added with a small smile, "do you like sweets? Or gourmet coffees with liquor?"

By the minute Roger was getting more comfortable with Asteria, and thanking Merlin that he had been given the opportunity to meet her. She was the kind of girl that he had been searching for, and she had been placed in his lap by chance.

"Salmon it is." she responded, with a small smile. She still felt awkward and out of her element, but the panic has started to retreat, leaving a little more room for her lungs to function properly. It helped that he seemed to be steering the conversation, it released some of the pressure she had felt and she didn't have to worry about trying to keep the conversation going and prevent that awkward silence everyone dreaded.

"Sugar and I are not friends, but I do happen to like dark chocolate. Preferably ranging between 50% and 65% cocoa. It's simply, but so addictive." With him taking control of the conversation, she was able to turn his questions around without too much hassle, something she often did when she was out of her element...which hadn't happened in a while, but was bound to happen again.

"Any sort of a salad or appetizer?" Roger asked, mentally deciding that he was going to have the duck as an entree, and the strawberry salad if she agreed to getting a first course as well. It didn't really matter to him if she did, because he intended to pick up the tab for dinner. He was old-fashioned that way, and hoped she wouldn't put up too much of a fight over it. Some women were so stubborn about who paid the bill.

"Dark chocolate is a favorite of mine as well," Roger nodded, glancing around the restaurant and spotting some familiar faces at the tables. Some of the nights, when he came in alone, some of the other regulars would invite him to sit with them. He gave a couple that he was particularly close with a small wave and a smile before returning his full attention to his lovely companion.

She shook her head at the question of an appetizer or salad. She would be perfectly fine with the salmon. When glanced away to a nearby table, she followed his gaze with her own eyes, raising an eyebrow as he causally waved to the couple sitting there. Alright, perhaps comfortable wasn't exactly a strong enough phrase. Not that it was a bad thing, of course.

She did have to admit that it was slightly reassuring to know that there were somethings that they had in common, even if it was something trivial like their favourite chocolate and the hatred for orange. Perhaps there would be other aspects of their personalities that matched...and perhaps this wouldn't be the very end of life as she knew it.

He'd probably have to eat something when he got home, Roger decided, when she opted not to have a first course. The training for Quidditch took so much out of him, and left him starving at the end of the day. But no matter how hungry he was, Roger was not about to order an additional course if his companion wasn't having one as well. He had plenty of food in his flat, and he was sure that something would appeal to him once he got home.

Roger got the waiter to come over after giving him a small smile, and barely listened to the specials, quite set on having the duck. It was one of his favorite meals, and he was quite looking forward to it. Once the waiter was done speaking, Roger looked to Asteria, obviously letting the woman order first.

Picking up on the cue, she politely ordered, before waiting patiently for Roger to do so as well. Without even realizing she was doing it, she had placed the menu, neatly folded at the edge of the table closest to the waiter before straightening her cutlery. When she did realize what she was doing, she pulled her hand a way, wincing at the sudden movement. There were times when she honestly felt like she made a fool of herself every time she had the chance. Had it not been so embarrassing, she would have sworn she enjoyed it. Thankfully, her brothers were not present to see her attempt to organize the entire world.

With a slight flush, she waited until the waiter had left before attempting to hide her blush and return to a safe topic of conversation. "So...quidditch." she finally managed, returning to the first thing that came to her mind. "When do you play again?"

Roger had always been observant--it was what helped him so much in Quidditch and school--so Asteria's ticks weren't missed on him. Instead of commenting on it, he just filed it away, assuming that the information would benefit him at some point. At her actions seemed rather impulsive, as she forced herself to stop, which made Roger even more determined not to comment. He had routines that he stuck by and hated being questioned on, and he thought Asteria could be the same way.

Roger was slightly surprised that Asteria was steering the conversation back to Quidditch, but he let it happen. "My next match is on Friday," Roger said after a moment's thought, not wanting to give her the wrong information. Though playing the game was his entire life, that didn't mean that he knew when every match was. On the contrary, he tended to figure out whether he had practice or a match the night before. "Against the Harpies."

She relaxed slightly when Roger didn't seem to notice her strange need to organize. She really didn't want to explain it and she got enough grief from her brothers....though she supposed, if they didn't give her a hard time they weren't exactly doing their 'brotherly duty', as they liked to call it.

"The Harpies would be....the women's team?" she asked, hesitantly. Alright, so Quidditch wasn't her strong point, but she was taking the initiative. That had to count for something. She didn't know if this whole forced marriage issue was going to go through or not, but if it did....well, Quidditch would be one thing she wouldn't be able to escape and Asteria had never enjoyed not knowing what was going on.

"I think you know more about Quidditch than you're letting on," Roger said with a small laugh. There were plenty of people who didn't know what color the Canon's were, or that the Harpies were the all women's team. Granted, if the person knew anything about mythology, they might get a good hint on the latter matter, but still. He was impressed by her effort, and was wracking his brain for a way to try to learn more about things that mattered to her. It wasn't fair that she was making all the efforts and he wasn't.

"So... What can I learn about international affairs?" Roger asked, taking another sip of his wine as he waited for Asteria to reply. Granted, it wasn't the smoothest segway, but Roger was trying... "Is there a particular country you're interested in?"

She flushed slightly when he commented on her knowledge of Quidditch. "I just know when to comment and when not to comment. My knowledge on the sport is in small pieces. I've two older brothers who are more into the sport than I am. I'm sure I've got more random pieces of information floating around."

She couldn't help raising her eyebrow when he turned the conversation to international affairs. For a moment she didn't know how to respond. After shaking off the surprise, she settled for the reply that first popped into her mind. "If you're looking at international affairs you'd best have an eye for detail. It's easy to sneak something into the clauses."

She didn't even want to think about the hassle that erupted in the legal department when someone was careless and didn't read through a document carefully before signing it. "As to your last question, I'd say Japan. Most look to the European continent, but honestly Japan is overlooked. Did you know their constitution limits the amount they spend on their military to 1% of their GNP and they still have one of the best militaries running. I don't know about some, but financially stable with a strong backing sounds like a very good friend to me."

Despite being a professional Quidditch player, Roger actually could hold his own in conversations that didn't center around his sport. The perks of being a successful Ravenclaw meant that he could generally converse about almost anything, even if he didn't have extensive personal knowledge on the subject.

"Have you ever been to Japan?" Roger asked curiously, having never been there himself. He'd heard plenty of things, but had never had the pleasure of being there himself.

"Unfortunately no. I once tried to talk Daphne into going with me, but not even the claim that it was 'the fashion capital of the world' could get her to go with me." she responded, somewhat amused. She'd been upset at the time, but looking back it was amusing. Despite how well they got along, Daphne and herself were two completely different people.

They had gone for quite sometime without incident and Asteria could feel herself all but relaxing in her surroundings. The cafe had been a good choice. It suited the purpose of a conversation, but wasn't as secluded as many of the other restaurants in the area. "Have you been?"

"I haven't," Roger admitted with a shrug, "I would be interested in going eventually, though."

"I've traveled a lot, due to Quidditch, but have to admit that my travels haven't taken me that far. Eastern Europe is the farthest I've gone yet, for work or pleasure," Roger said in a thoughtful tone, mentally running through all of the places he had been to be sure that he was telling her the truth.

"How about you? You strike me as the worldly traveler type," Roger said with a slight smile as he looked over at his companion.

Asteria shrugged. "Not particularly...though it isn't because I don't want to. I've just been so focused on accomplishing my goals that I've never taken the time. First with school and then with the Ministry. The only time I've had to travel was the holidays with my family and that was usual to one of our estates."

It was a little disappointing when she thought about it. There were so many places they could have gone and not once had they put the effort into it. "In all honesty I've only been throughout the British Isles, Switzerland, Germany, and France."
