You've got to be kidding. I went on my first actual date, ever, and didn't even realize that's what I was doing? That's so blighted typical of me.

And what in the Void am I supposed to do now?!?

Well first you ask if she'd like to go out again. And then you take her somewhere nice.

Or if somewhere nice would weird her out and make her think you've been replaced by a pod-person, take her somewhere she'd like to go, like the zoo or something.

We already have plans to go out again, to do the same thing we did a few days ago. Except pizza for dinner this time instead of Italian. Which probably isn't as nice. But it was her idea, so maybe that makes it okay? Or should I take her somewhere nice instead?

Maker have mercy, I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. I always thought when you went on a date, you'd know. Someone would tell you that's what you were doing, or something, or it'd be planned. I didn't think it'd happen by accident!

If she suggested pizza go for pizza. I cannot stress this enough. Changing dinner plans at the last minute is awkward and weird and only works out for the better if you're changing them from 'going out' to 'staying in and cooking' and even that's debatable.

Accidental dates happen all the time. My husband and I had a few of those at the beginning.

Oh, good, I'll happily not change the pizza plan. I love pizza. The Maker himself eats it, I'm convinced.

That's encouraging, I think.

You could always ask her.

Sure, but I give myself about six words before I manage to stick my foot in my mouth, and it's hard to ask things around a foot. Also my socks taste terrible, which would be very distracting.

Uh, is going to see Conan with you a date too?

Socks generally taste like feet, wool, and shame. But I'll tell you a secret - girls tend to think it's cute when blokes put their feet into their mouths. Don't know why, it's like when puppies fall over.

What? Oh, no, I um. There's this guy, and um. No, no.

Really? You'd think I'd have them falling over me in droves then, I put my feet in my mouth so regularly it's a wonder I don't have to be carted around to get anywhere.

And, uh, good. I mean, not good, I mean you're nice and all, but Aveline's, I mean...I seem to suddenly have enough trouble as it is, so that's just as well. And Aveline's...nice. Glad to hear you've got 'this guy', whoever he is.

...but why is it that my going to a shooting range and dinner with one woman is a date, and going to a movie with another one isn't? I swear there's some rulebook for this stuff that everyone's read but me.

You fancy Aveline. You don't fancy me. Which is fine, I think I'm taller than you anyway.

Because men and women can be friends, silly. When you and I watch a movie, I don't want to shag you after. Duh.

But I didn't know I fancied her! I mean...no, actually, I think that is what I mean. Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'd better think about that one, it's kind of come out of the blue for me. What has height got to do with it?

I thought that's what I was doing with Aveline too, though.

Yeah, you might want to think about these things before you tell her them and get punched in the face. And I don't know, I like men that are taller than me so I can wear heels. I'm six feet tall! It's awful!

... yeah. Go think before your dangly bits are in worse danger from certain pretty redheads.

Nothing wrong with women being tall. Though it's true you'd be taller than me in heels, so it's just as well we weren't going that route.

I'm not sure there's much point in thinking about things, actually. She's sort of married. Friends is the only option. It can't have been a date, no matter what anyone says, even if I do fancy her.

...excuse me, I think I need to go dunk my head in a bucket of water or something. Or get very, very drunk.

Do me a favor? Tell her you fancy her. Please? The worst she can do is say no, but then you'll have the air cleared.

That's not the worst. The worst is she says no, it's all awkward and embarassing, I lose the friendship of one of the most amazing women I've ever met, the new job I don't even have yet becomes a disaster, and let's not forget the part where I die of moritifcation.

All right, I'm exagerrating a bit..

I'll think about it.

Just be careful, Your Majesty. Assume nothing, if I might be so bold.

She's married; I don't think there's anything to assume, in those circumstances. Just my hard luck, I guess. But thanks for the advice.
