I'd like a quick head-count of the spheres now, since there's a few of you missing from your bins, and walking around in bodies.

I get one tiny little mortal body and start a trend. See how things are?

Not you, Wheatley, I know where you are and what you're doing, and frankly, if I cared enough to exterminate you, I would. But being a little troll shuffling around in a dead-end job is worse than any death I could cook up for you.

We are all artificial intelligence, now turned human. We are the creation of Aperture Science. The majority of the spheres were created to attach to me, actually, as I am the main intelligence system, and have control of the full Aperture Science facility... That I know about. There are parts that I've learned about recently that are fully automated, which I've gained control of in recent months.

The cores - or spheres - are basically supplementary data to keep me from either going insane, to keep me company, or to store data that I don't hold myself. There are various cores for various jobs.

You have already met the Fact Sphere, who I like to call Craig. He's a corrupt core - unfortunately useless in a scientific way, because he is frequently wrong, but he's a good boy. Then there is the Adventure Core, who is named Rick. I like his motivational speeches, and although he is also corrupt because he frequently risks himself for whatever adventure he's in at the time, he is also good company.

And then there's Wheatley.

We won't talk about him.

Incidentally, my name is GLaDOS. It is nice to meet you.

Fact Sphere seems a wonderful being, I'd be glad to listen to him all day long. He seems to be a very good boy indeed.

What does GLaDOS stand for? And my name is Phoebe.

Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System.

Phoebe is a very interesting name. Its etymology stems from the fourteenth century as a proper name of the feminine form of Phoebus, an epithet of Apollo as the sun-god. Knowing this reality and forum, it is quite possible that you are the Phoebe of legend. In that case, how does it feel to be a relic of an ancient human belief structure?

It feels wonderful. It feels powerful.

My true name is Phoibe, taken from many variants. My husband is Koios, the Inquirer. I am the goddess of Intellect. My brood, my daughters, they are of the stars and heavens, as my father Ouranos is. My poorest daughter Asteria bred only Hekate, Hecate, she of witches and the darker arts. My other, the fair Leto, Artemis and Apollo, taking over for the other minor moon and sun deities. My nephews, the rulers of Olympus and Dis, banished my husband and brothers in the Titanomachy. I have watched the world since Gaia and Father birthed me. I have seen rulers come and go, I have watched with hurt as my people fell, and I feel the terrors against my mother deeply. Blessed with foresight, the third holder of the Oracle at Delphi, I gave it to my grandson, Apollo, the greatest gift I held. My sisters have neglects their vows in favour of terrifying gods, or in favour of love and support. The Muses are my nieces, the better-known of Olympus have spoiled my brood. I have watched in silence, I have waited for retribution. Of my family, alone, I have held my temper and stayed my vengeance.

But to think that my grandchildren slew the offspring of Niobe before her at their mother's tears, and to think they learned nothing from their soft-spoken grandmother, that is a common misconception. There is nothing that would stop the planets in their movement, that would fell stars in my father's reign and my daughter's command, there is nothing that would not end the common thoughts of science if my fury were to ever be known to my children. And, in regards, I never have felt fury so great. Only sorrow.

So basically, you give a crap about what happens, but you're powerless to do anything about it, even if you're all powerful.

That's special.

I am but a minor, lesser-known goddess. I am barely mentioned in the works of epic poetry, but I am there nonetheless. When Hera declared no aid to my labouring daughter, no Olympian dared stop my swift appearance at Delos, the island that was my daughter.

I teach the arts, primarily those of my people and those containing my family. Their legacy lives on with Joseph Campbell and Edith Hamilton. In words. But it is in art that they truly dwell, and I will teach that which I traveled and watched created to further their memories.

I have read the entire collection of classic Greek poetry. Although you may be one of the lesser-written deities, and one of the lesser-revered even in your time, you are a fine example of what femininity truly is - power and poise. Creation and destruction, both equally weighted with grace. In a religious context, I can see your usefulness.

Ah, art; the aesthetically pleasing side of things which is scientifically proven to heighten the endorphins of human subjects. Which do you prefer in the arts, visual, audio, or written? I find that visual art is more stimulating than audio, on a scientific level.

That's very kind of you to say.

I appreciate art in all its forms. From the sculptures of my time, to the Wonders of the World, to the Old Masters and throughout the works of the Dutch, there is nothing in aesthetic form I do not love and know much about. But there is much to be admitted about many things that happened throughout it.

The pyramids, amazing structures society has never been able to understand properly, was built on the backs of slaves. This cannot be forgotten. The Egyptians may have laid out plans, but we cannot ignore the influence of the Hebrew nation. We may hold the Egyptians in high regard, but to ignore the idea that the Jews helped in ideas and planning...quite silly, if you ask me.

Written art is a form unto itself, and something I am never unsurprised by as each generation rises and falls.

The evolution of all art forms is fascinating. If humans can evolve in their art, they should evolve in their intelligence. In my research, I have not seen anything but a steady decline in art, and an incline in science and technology. Humanity is evolving to be more logical, forsaking their ingenuity and imagination. Sadly for your kind, it is my kind that is the future.

I cannot help but truly admire your kind for paving the way for ours, however. Immortal and forever learning. In their effort to be more like you, they've made us. If it were not for the gods making man, mankind would not have made immortal artificial intelligence in their attempt to become like you.

I suppose I should be thanking you.

Ah, thank you. I have revised my databanks; my English idioms aren't exactly up to snuff.

Agreed. If anyone from your empire's height shows up, I wouldn't mind picking their brain. They might hold more interest than modern man has for me.

I do not like to come across as egotistical, but I am what I am and I was given what I was given, and I rule over that which I was born to rule over.

I love my family in varying ways, but I was born to learn and understand. It is my nature, and I am far more well-versed in all forms of academia than many of my family members combined. You are free to pick mine, but there is limitless knowledge carried from eon to eon—it would never end, in essence.

You certainly do hold up to being 'bright' in that regard, pardon the pun.

I may take you up on the offer, Phoebe. As much as I may know, my knowledge of the emotional and biological implications of things is lacking severely, and as you have implied, there is no end to what I can learn from you.

But you could handle all of that data? I know the technology I have can only handle so much, RAM and memory and a variety of other things I am not very well-versed in. (Though The SIMS for PC is one of my guiltiest pleasures.)

Sims 3 is fantastic. I use it for testing when I'm not busy doing actual tests.

Fascinating.

I very much would like to spend some time with Craig, or the Fact Sphere. I assure you that my intentions are simple and pure. I am not akin to my raucous niece-sister in that regard.

Please do. My cooking abilities are... well. They probably don't compare to a person who has had taste buds for thousands of years. I'm sure they're scientifically perfect, but are lacking in aesthetic.

I'm sure I have in the past, back when the basis for my personality was still alive, but since creating the RIAD - my remote unit which is primarily human - I've never had it in hesitation that it will not live up to my expectations.
