When I return from Hong Kong, I'm going to get a dog.

Dogs are awesome. I miss mine.

I've never had a dog. What happened to yours?

He's probably home, I'm sure. I'm in my past. I have a llama.

Oh. Right. I'm sorry, I should have realized. Why a llama?

It's fine, you don't know me. Well, they're cute, and I shear him and spin his fur into wool.

I guess I've been here so long I have a tendency to forget that others might not.

I assume he lives outside? How is that in terms of the actual pet-owner relationship? And what do you do with the wool?

Well, I'm not supposed to be born for a while yet.

Yup! Well, I don't get to cuddle him or anything, but he knows his name and he comes when I call! I knit a lot of things, so that's what I use the wool for. I'm making gloves and a hat for myself right now.

I am familiar with that phenomenon here.

I see. That's rather interesting, really. I don't believe I would have ever given a llama much thought as a companion animal. Why don't you get another dog though, if you miss yours?

And you'll have to forgive me. Usually when I think of people who knit, it's the elderly grandmother-type in a rocking chair by a fire.

Yeah, it happens a lot and it sucks.

I'd get a goat for the milk to make soap with, but my dad said no. And I live with my family still, I don't know. I'm still settling in.

Really? People say that a lot.

I can only imagine. It must be very strange for you.

No offense intended, but you don't look like the soap-making type, either. Perhaps that's why people say it? You present an unusual juxtaposition of assumptions to the casual observer.

I can see why you might not want to commit to a dog under those circumstances.

My parents are so young!

I make soap and I look like me. I didn't know that there was a type!

Not yet, maybe soon.

How did they react to meeting you? Pretty surprised, I'd wager.

I think it's the pink hair. Sorry. Not that there's anything wrong with having pink hair, but knitting and soap-making is associated in my mind with hair that's more... blue.

Sounds like me. Puppy or dog?

Surprised, but my dad and I are really close. We just picked up where we left off.

Oh, it's natural. My dad's cherry red, and Mom's purple.

Well, there's lots of older dogs that don't get homes and get put down 'cause puppies are cuter. Dog.

Where you left off? I don't understand.

... I see. I don't think I've ever met anyone with pink hair before.

Exactly my thinking. Also, with a dog, you know what you're getting.

We're as close as I was before I left!

Oh, my grandma has pink hair, I think that's where I got it from.

And you don't have to potty train.

So you've been here before, then. Left and came back?

I have to ask, given the number of other and more than human beings here, which category you fall into. Are you fully human? I wasn't aware that pink was a natural human variation for hair color.

An excellent and important point.

Oh, nope, I'm from the fuuuuuuture~

Well, my grandmother was part muppet? So I'm a tiny bit muppet. We all have hair like this, though my cousins are mostly just streaked. My mom was also a genetic experiment, so I'm really strong.

I have 'em sometimes.

Oh. I think I understand what you mean, then. You get along well with your father in the future, and it translated to your arrival here.

Muppet? As in, Jim Henson's Muppets? Wow. All right. I suppose I've encountered my share of... interesting things here, why not? A genetic experiment? May I ask how so?

My future dog thanks you for it.

Exactly!

Well, her dad made her in a test tube and enhanced her DNA. She doesn't like to talk about it.

You're welcome!

I'm smart sometimes.

This is me, blinking at the screen. I won't ask, then.

Maybe even two of them, if I'm feeling ambitious.

Well, I'm not a geneticist, I don't know how it worked!

Wow, that's a lot of puppy.

Only sometimes, though.

I just don't want to open up old wounds. Or sound like I'm prying.

I'll have a lot of free time on my hands when I return.

Well, better sometimes than never?

Her father was a crazy genius. I don't know much about the how, but she's stronger than anyone I've met that isn't a god, and and smarter than a lot of people. She can also learn things by playing video games. That's her favorite.

Why? New job?

I suppose. I think my intelligence is slipping lately. Or maybe that's just my common sense.

I think a lot of people would choose video games over school. You sound very proud of her. Are you close?

No, nothing like that. If I've interpreted correctly what I've read, my girlfriend just broke up with me. I'm swearing off relationships with people of the bipedal variety.
