[Rachel] Hey. Are you alright? Haven't seen you around.

So. Anyone else I should be checking in with? Mia, Harkness cult? You guys alright?

Yeah, all she has to do is look at them. But animals too, wow.

Puberty's when a lot of metahumans seem to come into their powers. Gotta love it. How old were you when you came to X-Factor? Still 13?

And I don't read the books about my galaxy either. Unless it's in the past for me, since that was all in history lessons anyway.

Yeah, it's... interesting, to say the least. Thankfully, most of the animals I morph now, I can control completely. Otherwise it can be a little... shocking, to have the brain of, say, a fly.

I was twenty, when I landed here. The war was three years long, then three years... off. We were on our last mission when we landed here- Jake, Marco and I.

No. From what they say, they're narrated by us. Like, our thoughts while we were in the middle of fights and things like that. It's not... I don't want to relive it.

...Ow. That sounds like it would hurt.

Do you like vortex world better than your home?

I don't blame you. If something came out with my thoughts in it? Ew.

It's not... pain. It doesn't feel great, but it doesn't hurt. Adrenaline probably had a lot to do with that, and now I'm just used to it.

Considering I'm 99% sure I was a second away from death, at home? Yeah. I was... there wasn't anything for me, at home. My girlfriend was dead, I had no family, no education. I was living as a hawk in Yellowstone, for the three years after the war. The only the I had left was some... friends. Alien friends. Long story.

Especially considering we weren't the most... yeah, Ew is succinct.

I have to say, since you probably don't remember, you being a Jedi sort of made my life. For the record.

So when you're a fly... never mind. At least you really get to be that fly on the wall, huh?

Long stories usually are.

I don't remember, yet, but I get that a lot. Glad I make people's days. Lives. Whatever. As long as you're not one of those creepy fans who dresses up like a Wookiee.

Early on, yeah, we had hive mentalities as insects. They seem to fade, the longer we have the morphs. Also? You ever see like a fly? It's not as ideal as people let on.

You hear it, later on in life. If you really want to hear it again, I'll bore you later.

Creepy fan I'm not. I have plenty of other ways to be freakishly large and hairy, I don't need hot, impossible costumes.

But you still know you're you when you're whatever. Hm.

Sounds good.

Smart answer. I like you already. So, do you remember this happening as what got you into X-Factor? Is this one of those weird time thingies?

Yep, two minds, one body. (Also? The only reason I could understand that, was because I have many, many friends with such profound logic. :P)

Actually... no, I don't particularly remember this being it. I remember going to see my wife- girlfriend, at the time, Rachel, in NYC. I wanted to stay by her, but I wasn't what you would call 'financially gifted', and didn't feel like sleeping in Central Park. Bird or not, it is cold this time of year. So I went in to talk to you guys, and crashed there.

What can I say? That kind of logic is a gift. And "whatever" and "thingies" are the technical terms.

Crashing is very acceptable. So this changes the timeline thingy, then? Or it could still happen that way. Or, you might not remember this. Or, this is making my head hurt and I should stop thinking about time things.

Of course they are. That's what we call the Hernandez School of Engineering. 'If it's broke, beat it into submission.'

Especially considering I didn't so much need a room, as one of the artsy lamps around. I still sleep as a bird, most of the time. Years of familiarity. Also, I choose not to think about the timestream. That's Torchwood territory, and I'm just a blissfully naive Yank with a freakish talent.

That's my thoughts exactly.

Oh, I'm sure there's plenty of rooms, especially since I'm sharing with Jamie. Leaves one open. Unless you wanna sleep somewhere else, with Isabel or something. I'm sure she'd love another dog around sometimes. ;)

You're very smart to leave time stuff to whoever else wants it. Knew there was a reason Jamie hired you.

You and Marco get along well. Better than Jamie really approves of. ;)

Isabel doesn't really know what to think of me. I think I smell like a bird even when I'm in morph, now. It confuses a lot of animals.

One of the five smartest idiot humans, back home. And I'm still convinced Jamie hired me out of pity. But that's alright.

And there's Rahne and Anakin that share a room too, cause X-Factor is sorta...

uh, what? You should see the face I'm making right now. Don't tell me Jamie actually has a shred of jealousy/possessiveness in the future.

I can try and explain it to her. I love being able to communicate with animals sometimes.

X-Factor needs all kinds. He has his reasons.

A couples lounge that happens to help people on occasion? Yeah, we know.

Well, maybe not to your face, but I think he just disregards Marco on principle. Not to mention, he has Coo- Ceridwen, to worry about.

It's alright, I'm used to it. She's a good dog.

This is true. Then again, you got four-of-a-kind with this deal, so. He was getting his money's worth, at least.

*just laughing and facepalming*

Who has who to worry about?

She must be getting kinda old in 10 years, but I'm glad she's still around.

I was gonna ask if your friends ever joined, but it sounds like they do.

Marco, one of the other Animorphs- what we called ourselves, also, one of my better friends. He's married to Ceridwen Jones- part of Torchwood, and the expansive family attached to Jack Harkness. Somehow.

She's sort of old, which is why she doesn't chase me around as much anymore, but she's still got some fight. Good dog.

They're not on the payroll, really. They just help out. We're a package deal.

I think Torchwood is to them what X-Factor is to us. And they have a Jack, and we have a Jack. Plenty to go around.

Oh good. Good. She's lasted me longer than some men and lots of friends have, I'd hate to lose her anytime soon. Don't tell me she tries to chase you when you're in bird form or whatever?

That sounds generous.

Yeah, pretty much. And there's a lot of overlap, on top of everything. I go where the action is.

Oh, she does sometimes, but she can't exactly catch me. I'm smarter than your average hawk.

Honestly? It passes the time. After Jake digests the first war, he realizes that we can't really get away from the good fight. They help out on cases they we have knowledge on, some alien encounters, things like that.

Good to know we're doing good and not still just a couples lounge years from now. And fighting the good fight is the best way to pass the time.

I really do love that dog. I'll have to have a talk with her.
