Hermione Jean Granger ([info]ex_enchantin428) wrote in [info]ultrarpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger.
When: Monday evening sometime.
Where: Hermione's flat.
What: A surprise visit from Ron :D.
Rating: PG-13 -- simply because Ron has a potty mouth.
Status: Complete.

Hermione's day had been quiet, well planned out. She had systematically checked off everythign on her list. And for the second time in less than a week Hermione had managed to finish up what she had wanted done before she went home. She really was making head way on her projects at work and it brought her such happiness. Soon there would be more rights for all creatures. It was everything she had ever dreamed of!  Having any free time was a rare opportunity. If truth be told she was rather enjoying this little development. It gave her all the time in the world to relax in her home and keep an eye on Crookshanks. She had yet to get to the bottom of that mystery! But she was working on it.

Nestled into a large chair, her copy of Hogwarts: A History was splayed out onto her lap. One hand absently flipped the pages while the other hand gently stroked Crookshanks head.  It was nights like these that Hermione truly enjoyed. It gave her every chance to unwind. The stress of the day was gone and Hermione was able to concentrate on something that wasn't work related. She loved those moments. Reaching out she grabbed her cup of tea, slowly bringing it to her lips so that she could take a drink.

Nothing could be more perfect tonight. Well, maybe one thing.

Ron had been sitting in his flat, fidgeting, when he finally made the decision to go and see Hermione. He hadn't seen her too terribly much lately, what with the vast amount of work she was doing and his own auror training. He had been thinking about sending Pig out with a letter, but the truth was that Harry had been acting a bit strange lately, and Ron was lonely.

Ron peered into his mirror, trying to tidy up his hair or at least will the red blush staining his cheeks to go away. He wasn't sure why he was so nervous to visit Hermione. It wasn't like things were weird between them. Yeah, that's what he'd keep telling himself.

There was a floral table setting his mum had brought over sitting on the kitchen counter. It was a few days old and a couple of the leaves and flowers had started to wilt, but he figured it looked good enough. Ron grabbed it, took a deep breath, and apparated to Hermione's house. He'd meant to land in the back of it, hidden from Muggle view, but instead he landed in a bush. Great.

Dusting himself off, Ron headed to the front of the door and knocked loudly. He clutched his sad-looking plant tightly in one hand, completely unaware that his hair had a few stray leaves in it.

Having not been expecting anyone Hermione was particularly surprised to hear a knock at her front door. In fact, it had surprised her so much that she choked on her tea, choughing rather violently. Much to Crookshanks dismay she ceased the petting, closed her book and see it aside before she stood up.

Stashing her wand in her jeans she moved towards the door. One could never be too careful. After all of those years it was a difficult habit to break. Slowly she cracked open the door, peering out from behind it. "Hello?" She would ask first before recognition would set in.

"Ron?" she asked with a tone of surprise. Her eyes were dragged downwards by the flowers in his hand. How sad did they look? But it made her heart beat just a little faster upon seeing them, dying or not. "What are you doing here?" Hermione seemed to have lost all sense of her manners.

"Hermione?" Ron peered around the door crack to squint at his friend. "I came to see you?" He sounded unsure of himself now, wondering if he'd come at a bad time. Embarrassed, he quickly hid his flowers behind his back and took a step away from the door.

"Are you busy? Do you ... have company?" Ron shuffled his feet and stared at the ground. He should have owled her first, or even called. He'd gotten a telephone installed in his flat sometime after the war had ended.

"I'm interrupting something, aren't I?" Ron sounded gloomy, only encouraged by the fact that Hermione was only staring at him through a tiny slit in the door.

Quickly Hermione shook her head, pulling the door open even further. "No! Not at all," she said rather quickly. Her cheeks flushed, but she tried to cover it by continuing to talk. "It's just a surprise to see you. I hadn't been expecting you. I was just reading. That's all." She was sure she sounded a little guilty, even if she had no reason to be. It was a rush of feelings that she could hardly explain. There really was no one there and she really wasn't busy.

"Come in, really." She stepped back then, holding the door open for him. "You're not interrupting anything. Although, I'm not sure Crookshanks will be all too pleased." Hermione smirked at him. Crookshanks and Ron had such a loving relationship. You know, like Crookshanks loved to claw at Ron while he wasn't looking.

"Oh, well, okay." Ron gave Hermione a lopsided grin and tried to nonchalantly hold the flowers out to her without actually looking like he was trying to give her a present. He was absolutely terrible at this kind of thing, though even this was better than the time he'd tried to give her a bottle of shampoo.

"Of course you were reading." Ron rolled his eyes and stepped inside her apartment, glancing around nervously for the beast of a cat she loving called Crookshanks. He wasn't sure why, but that stupid animal had never taken to him.

"So, uhh, how've you been? What's going on?"

Her words stung. Ron felt himself getting angry, getting defensive, and to be frank this was almost a welcome change to the strange awkwardness that consumed him the rest of the time. His fingers started to curl up into fists as she told him she fancied someone. Someone else.

"Yeah?! Oh, come on, Hermione! Just because you fancy someone doesn't mean they fancy you back!" How true that was. "You really have got it down now. Crazy and cats, you've already got that, now you just need to figure out how to be a lady!"

He mirrored her, folding his own arms across his chest. "Not like anyone but me can really stand you anyhow."

He did not just say that to her! Things had certainly taken a quick change. It was all Ron's fault anyway!

"Maybe I know that they fancy me! How do you know that I don't know that? It's not impossible Ron!" Hermione may not have actually fancied anyone but Ron but she wasn't going to ever let him know. She was going to torture him with this information.

For a moment Hermione was stunned into silence. Learn how to be a lady!? She turned quickly, facing him again. Her mouth seemed to open and close a few times before she could actually speak again. "You .. you insufferable prat! I'm more of a lady then you'll ever know! Who are you to say I need to learn to be a lady. What do you know about a proper lady!? Let's look at your history with women, Ron." Hermione paused, taking a deep breath. "Lavender is hardly someone I would call a lady. So, excuse me, Ronald if I don't take what you have to say seriously!" Even though Hermione was quite clearly upset by this.

"I'll have you know I went out for coffee just the other day with Noel! He can stand me! So that just blows your theory right out of the water!" She huffed then, glaring at him.

"What?!" Ron's mind jumped straight to her last sentence. "You went out for coffee with Noel?! NOEL VAISEY? Hermione! He's a Slytherin! I think he might even be, you know, a poof. Fat lot of good that does YOU." Ron could simply not believe that Hermione had gone out for coffee with a Slytherin.

"You know, it's really nice how I come over here to see you, since you've been so busy lately, and I find out that you haven't been too busy in general, just too busy for me." Ron's fists were clenched now, and so were his teeth. It was only a few seconds later that he acknowledged the rest of her rant.

Oh Merlin. She was psychic, why the hell else would she have brought up Lavender?!

"I, uhh, if you really fancied someone who fancied you back, why are you sitting alone in your apartment, huh?"

"Of course I went out for coffee with him! He asked me to!" Okay, well tht wasn't exactly true. It had been a silent invitation that Hermione had taken upon herself to make verbal. "He's a very nice boy, Ronald! Just because he was a Slytherin doesn't mean he's evil!" She had enjoyed his company!

Hermione was suddenly at her feet, staring down at him. It was really the only way Hermione could ever look down on Ron Weasley. Hands on her hips she continued to rant and rave. "Oh honestly, Ronald! Now you're just taking this out of context. I have not been too busy for you! I haven't exactly heard from you either recently! Up until now how much of an effort have you made!? You can't go putting all the blame on me!" Hermione was breathing heavily, brows furrowed as she stared at him. He was so frustrating!

Losing some of her fight she glanced away, crossing her arms over her chest. "Well, I haven't spent much time in my flat and I rather like it!" That was pathetic. And she knew it.

"Hmph." Ron stared grumpily up towards Hermione from underneath his lashes. He was pouting and he knew it, but he couldn't help but be completely miffed at the whole situation.

"Sure, sure. Very nice boy. Maybe if you'd told me that's the kind of company you're keeping lately, I wouldn't have come over at all! Remember the battle at Hogwarts, where all the Slytherins turned on their stupid snake tails and fled? Yeah, I bet Vaisey was one of them. Wonder if he left because he was too scared of a fight or if he supported You-Know-Who." This was a touchy subject for Ron, too. Just the fact that he'd been in the castle to know what had happened made him upset. He shouldn't have known. Shouldn't have been there, should have just stayed with Harry.

"Oh, yeah, it's all my fault then! We work in the same building, Hermione, but you never make time to come over and see how me and Harry are doing." Same could be said for him, really, but that wasn't the point.

"You probably don't." Ron had still been trying unsuccessfully to find some food in Hermione's house, but he took a moment to pause and give her a poke in the stomach with his finger. It didn't poke in very far at all, which he took to mean that Hermione just wasn't eating enough. Not that it was easy to tell with her stupid clothes in the way.

Ron's face started to flush, embarrassed that Hermione might somehow be able to tell what he was thinking about again. He tried to change the subject. "Ahh, what would it matter to me if you went out to dinner with someone? You're obviously already tainted." Trying to show that he was joking, sort of, Ron reached out and took the cracker from her hand, his fingers brushed across her palm as he did so. He had just popped it into his mouth and begun to chew when she made the comment about staying the night. He started to choke.

"You want me to stay with you tonight?" Ron's words were only half audible, covered up by a frantic coughing to unstick the dry cracker.

"I do!" Hermione had swatted at his hand when it came at her stomach. "I'm not too sure why you would care. You seem to be very interested in what I'm doing this evening. And bes -- Tainted!?" She made an angry face at him, but it was clear that she wasn't really angry. Oh, Ron would know if she was angry. That much was certain. It really sort of looked like she was pouting.

Hermione's face had never been so flushed in her life. Diverting her eyes she began to fidget with her hands. "I, well .. I mean you can stay if you'd like." She finally looked up at him, her heart hammering in her chest. She may have not really meant it that way, but it had been the way it came out. It wasn't as though they hadn't slept together in that sense. They'd spent many nights together. With Harry.

"I just -- I figured you -- That is to say you don't have to if you don't want to to." Oh Merlin. Oh Merlin. How had this happened?! She knew she must have looked ridiciulous. And obvious. S

It was possible this was the first time in Ron's life that he was completely and utterly speechless. Of course, that could have had something to do with the fact that he was still choking. His brain was going absolutely crazy, trying to stop him from dying and process Hermione's words at the same time. It seemed like it took ages, but Ron finally managed to swallow all of his cracker properly and breathe again.

Ron had spent a lot of nights under the same roof as Hermione. Harry had almost always been there, though, and even when Hermione stayed over at the Burrow she was in another room. It was hard enough to sleep those nights, knowing that his sister was bunking with Hermione. He'd seen Ginny's nightgowns a hundred times, but the thought of Hermione borrowing one for the night, just imagining what she looked like in proper bedclothes, was enough to keep him awake far too long.

"Like .. like stay the night?" Ron's eyes were frantic blue pools as he tried to figure out what the bloody hell she was actually saying. Five minutes ago they'd been biting each other's heads off.

Oh Merlin. He was quiet. And seemed to be dying. Reaching forward, a feat she wasn't even aware she was doing, and gently patted him on the back. A dead Ron would clearly not be a fun Ron. Was he quiet because he quite possibly was completely revolted by the idea? That was a possibility. Or maybe he was actually thinking about.

Hermione wasn't sure what was scarier to her.

"If you'd like," she said very quietly. Who was she!? Where had Hermione gone? Had someone slipped something into that cracker? Into her tea earlier? "I'm sure you're probably busy later and you probably have to be at work really early. I just thought that since we haven't seen each other maybe ..." Had she really thought that!? Now she was just spilling out things that weren't even true!

She hadn't thought about this! She hadn't!!

Ron was also wondering where exactly Hermione had gone. He had expected her to say it was some joke, or that he had been clearly mistaken in what she was asking. He was only vaguely aware of her hand patting him gently on the back, trying to make sure he didn't die. He might just die anyway, and it wouldn't have a damn thing to do with the cracker. He'd barely touched Hermione, hadn't kissed her or given her a good hug or anything since he was ... well, since he was seventeen. It was absolutely ridiculous to think that they had danced an awkward circle around each other for the last five years, though at the same time, hadn't they done it for five in school the first time around? He tried to tell himself it was because of the the horror and sadness that the war had caused, but maybe he had just been too scared, afraid of what might happen, angry at himself for how he had behaved.

"I, uhh, I do need to be to work early." What the hell was he saying?! Was he trying to give up his chance? Was this even a chance? What did she want from him? Was she expecting something to happen? Maybe she was playing with him, though that seemed unlikely for someone like Hermione.

"Maybe we could go to work early together in the morning. You just have to wake me up.." Oh Merlin. He'd said yes.

Ron was pretty sure that if Hermione knew some of the things he had been thinking about her, she would have much worse things to call him than a lecherous old man. She seemed to take his scarlet women comment in stride, at the very least, so he could breathe easier. Of course she would know what he was talking about. She probably remembered everything that everyone had ever said to her in her entire life.

"Okays'fine." The words were out of Ron's mouth before he was entirely sure what he had said. It took a few seconds to actually sink in, and then his pulse was racing. He was going to stay over Hermione's house, and he was going to share her bed. They hadn't kissed each other in five years and now they were going to bed together. Surely this was backwards? Oh, well, it wasn't like anything was going to happen. Ron was almost positive that he was going to lay there all night making absolutely positive that any part of his body refrained from touching any part of hers lest he have a mental breakdown. Maybe he could wrap himself up in a cocoon with an extra blanket or something.

"Like before.." Ron repeated quietly, his vision unfocused as he thought about those old times. He hated it. Hated thinking about anything that had happened back then. It was just a huge sea of horrible memories. The only good thing that had come from it all was his first kiss, his only kiss with Hermione. What price had it come at? Sometimes at night Ron would have nightmares that involved Bellatrix Lestrange and the sound of Hermione's screaming voice as she was tortured.

"Idunwannatalkaboutbefore." He muttered, kicked the ground, and stuffed his hands into his pockets. His teeth were clenched.

The sad thing was Hermione would be grateful to hear what Ron was actually thinking. It was scary, too. Who knew what she might find out!

"Really?" She asked tentatively. Ron Weasley was really going to sleep in her bed. How did she think she was actually going to sleep tonight!? More than likely she'd lay awake tossing and turning. But no touching!

Before. Hermione winced slightly. Even though it had been so many years before the wounds seemed so raw still. She wasn't sure it would ever really be okay.

Reaching her hand out she grasped his, lacing her fingers with his. "We won't." She squeezed his hand a bit before releasing it and turning around. "So, Weasley, since we're having a sleep over what do you propose we do?" Glancing over her shoulder at him she smiled. "I already have my copy of Hogwarts: A History out. Maybe we could read a bit from that. It's truly fascinating. What do you think?" Hermione was more than certain that Ron would rather poke his own eye out than read that book.

Her skin was unbelievably soft. Ron felt his hand be tugged out of his pocket, felt Hermione's smooth fingers lace through his for just a minute before they slipped away. He thought about grabbing her, forcing her to stay close, but he shook his head visibly and placed his hand back into the pocket of his jeans. He stared at her for a moment, kind of sadly. Maybe it was just as hard for her as it was for him to think about those times. Maybe not.

"Huh. Granger, are you bloody mad? You want to read a book?" Ron was incredulous at first, but then -- "Okay, yeah. Let's do that." As boring as it would be, it would give Ron something to think about other than being in a bed with Hermione. If he was focusing on that stupid awful book, he probably wouldn't get himself into an incredibly awkward situation involving the shifting material of his pants.

This whole thing was mortifying, really. Ron almost wished he'd owled Harry for advice first. But then, Harry might have brought up Ginny, and that wouldn't have helped at all.

Shaking a finger at him she pretended to be upset. "Language, Ronald." Yes, even after all these years she would reprimand him for his foul mouth. She would have even continued to tell him about watching his mouth had he not actually agreed to it.

"I really wasn't expecting you to agree to that. You can't honestly want to read a book together! There must be something else you want to do!" She really wasn't herself tonight. Ron Weasley actually wanted to read a book and Hermione was offering to do something else. Reaching forward again she placed a hand onto his forehead. "Are you ill? What have you done with Ron?"

Hermione was sure Ginny was going to have a field day with this. IF she ever found out. Oh. Hermione would just never tell her. That was all. Simple.

Ron briefly wondered if someone was playing a very cruel joke on him with the use of Polyjuice potion. "Rally? Are YOU alright? You don't want to read the book? It was your idea after all..." Ron was going to push Hermione's hand away from his forehead; it always reminded him of his mother when she did that, but he paused. On second thought, maybe that would be useful tonight.

"Wh-what else is there to do?" Ron silently cursed himself for stuttering again, but he had caught a peek of Hermione's bed through a crack in her bedroom door.

"Maybe we should just go to sleep. Very tired, have to get up early you know..." His voice trailed off as he tried to avoid looking at her bedroom again. Bollocks! Now she was going to think he was trying to lure her off to bed, playing the 'oh I'm so sleepy' routine or something.

Ron was staring at his lap, staring at the hand that had just touched Hermione's thigh. Seemed like it should look different or something. He took a deep breath and tried to concentrate, to focus, to figure out what to say or how to fix this situation. Why couldn't he just act like an adult? Ron was fairly certain that most 22-year-old boys didn't freak out if they touched a girl's leg. No, in fact, even thinking about it was stupid. He supposed he really should have gone out sometime in the last five years and met someone, gotten all the awkward sex stuff over with so he wasn't so stupid now, but there was no use wishing at this point. To Ron, the last five years had barely happened. Sometimes he felt like he was stuck in a twenty-two-year-old's body with a seventeen-year-old's brain. Everyone else had moved on, even his little sister (he really didn't want to think about what Ginny had been doing with her spare time) while he was just stuck.

He couldn't look up. "Maybe I should go home." He said quietly. It really seemed like the best idea at this point.

Slowly turning Hermione sat down next to him. Her legs dangled off the side of the bed. She had wanted to reach over and take this hand. But how could she right now? Had things not gotten so out of hand perhaps she would have. Maybe she just needed a bit more courage.

Neither of them had moved on. They were both stuck in this endless loop and she wanted it to end. She wanted to just let it all out. It was obvious, though, that perhaps Ron wasn't ready for that admission from her. She felt her heart squeeze painfully when he mentioned going home.

It probably would have been for the better, but the illogical side of her brain wasn't processing it properly. "If you really want to go I won't make you stay."

"Hermione.." Ron sighed, staring hard at his friend as if maybe she could somehow just read his mind, take all the thoughts and feelings he couldn't control and sort them out for him. He had the weirdest tearing sensation in his belly at the moment, as if maybe he had done something horribly wrong but also horribly right.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled and stood up, collecting his shoes from underneath the bed and shoving his feet into them. "I didn't mean to ruin your night." That wasn't what he wanted to say, though! He wanted to say so many different things but this just wasn't the time, wasn't the place to say them. He didn't know when the time or the place would be, exactly, but he couldn't think clearly now.

One thing Hermione had promised herself was that she was not going to cry. At least not in front of him. So instead she bit down onto her bottom lip, watching him watch her. As strange as it might have seemed she might have understood some. It probably stemmed from her own thoughts. On some level she knew how he felt.

"You don't have to be sorry about anything. You didn't ruin my night," she said quietly. It was hardly his fault. Pulling her feet up she tucked them off to the side of her body. "I'm glad you came." And truly she was.

Ron had his doubts that Hermione was actually glad he'd come. He'd interrupted her book, made a mess in her kitchen (which she would surely find later and scold him for), fought with her about various men, and literally caused the most awkward night he'd had in five years. He was sure it must have ranked pretty high on her list of awkward nights as well.

"You know this, this would have been weird." Ron was shaking his head, almost talking to himself instead of his friend. Maybe he was trying to convince himself he was doing the right thing by leaving. Five years ago, when Hermione had come on to him, he had given in so easily, completely oblivious to the fact that a war was going on. Today she was asking him to spend the night and he was running off in fright. Clearly things were backwards here. He wondered when it would get better. Then he wondered if it would ever get better. Maybe they'd had a chance once and now it was gone. Time's up.

He couldn't even look at her as he got ready to apparate.
