Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger.
When: Monday evening sometime.
Where: Hermione's flat.
What: A surprise visit from Ron :D.
Rating: PG-13 -- simply because Ron has a potty mouth.
Status: Complete.

Hermione's day had been quiet, well planned out. She had systematically checked off everythign on her list. And for the second time in less than a week Hermione had managed to finish up what she had wanted done before she went home. She really was making head way on her projects at work and it brought her such happiness. Soon there would be more rights for all creatures. It was everything she had ever dreamed of!  Having any free time was a rare opportunity. If truth be told she was rather enjoying this little development. It gave her all the time in the world to relax in her home and keep an eye on Crookshanks. She had yet to get to the bottom of that mystery! But she was working on it.

Nestled into a large chair, her copy of Hogwarts: A History was splayed out onto her lap. One hand absently flipped the pages while the other hand gently stroked Crookshanks head.  It was nights like these that Hermione truly enjoyed. It gave her every chance to unwind. The stress of the day was gone and Hermione was able to concentrate on something that wasn't work related. She loved those moments. Reaching out she grabbed her cup of tea, slowly bringing it to her lips so that she could take a drink.

Nothing could be more perfect tonight. Well, maybe one thing.

Hermione bit down onto her bottom lip when he grinned like that at her. It melted her -- not that she would actually admit that to anybody! The color was back in her cheeks when he held out his hand with the flowers. He'd brought them for her? Reaching out she took them from him, her own hand gently brushing his as the flowers switched hands.

"Thanks," she said softly as she closed the door behind him. She wasn't sure why he'd brought them, but the thought was lovely. "You really ought to give reading a chance, Ron." Looking over her shoulder at him as she passed by she smiled. "That is if you know how to open a book."

She paused before entering her kitchen. "I've been just great. Work has been crazy, but I'm really making progress. They've rejected my ideas quite a few times, but really it's because they were rubbish at first. I think I was too over eager, but I've made them really great now. I can't see why they wouldn't accept them now I mean .." Suddenly she trailed off, quickly turning around. Yes, she was rambling. Yes, she was trying to get out of this embarassing situation.

"And how are you? Auror training going well? Your family?" Disappearing in to the kitchen she grabbed a vase and filled it with water. Returning to where he was she let her head fall to the side, placing the flowers inside the vase as she waited for his answers.

Ron felt Hermione's hand touch his as she took the flowers from him and he felt his own face getting hot. He knew he should be over this kind of thing by now, that every single touch and glance shouldn't set him on edge, but he just .. wasn't. The two of them had actually been making some progress once, but then everything terrible had happened, a lot of friends had died, and it was hard to worry about things like relationships. He still felt like an awkward seventeen-year-old, oblivious to the fact that maybe Hermione cared about him in the same way he did her. Neither one of them was doing a good job of admitting it.

He followed Hermione inside and tucked his hands into his pockets. As he walked, a leaf fell out of his hair and fluttered to the otherwise perfectly clean floor. Taking a furtive glance and assessing that Hermione was indeed busy, he kicked it underneath a rug.

She started to talk then, about her job at the ministry, a hundred miles a minute. He couldn't do more than stare at her. How had been been away from her for so long? Sometimes it was hard to remember that the two fought constantly, but then, wasn't that part of the charm?

"I'm sure your ideas are, uhh, really great." He rolled his eyes. Surely she wasn't still on this crusade to save the whales or whatever. "Training is good, a lot of fun, yanno? Oh, and family's good. Mum misses you like crazy. Wants to know why you haven't visited."

Hermione had never been sure how to approach the subject of them again. Yes, she had thrown herself at him once before, but it was different now. They were older and Hermione had never felt that she could do it again. Especially since she wasn't always entirely certain of the way Ron felt. Hermione had assumed that perhaps Ron wou;d have made a move, been more forward. But things, maybe, were just too hard.

Setting the vase onto her kitchen table she arranged the flowers, glancing at Ron every so often. She had noted the tone in his voice when it came to her ideas to deal with the magical creatures. A brow arched at him, but for the moment that was all he got.

"Training is fun?" She turned to fully face him, leaning back against the table. What Hermione really wanted to say was how much it worried her that he was back in harms way. Hadn't they had enough of it. She studied Ron, letting her eyes roam where they pleased. When had he grown up?

But before she had more time to dwell guilt flashed across her features. "I miss your mum, too. I suppose I've just been caught up at work. I haven't had a day off in ages. There's just to much to be done. I'll have to stop by, though on my way home one night."

"Yeah, fun. Harry and I, we'll be real Aurors soon." Ron couldn't contain his excitement at the thought. Ever since he'd been a little boy, he'd wanted to do something good, something great even. He finally felt like it might be happening for him. He had a cool job, his own apartment, and a ... well, he didn't actually have a girlfriend, but he had a Hermione. Sort of. Unless she'd found someone else or hated him now or had never liked him that way to begin with or maybe had once and then stopped because he took so bloody long to do anything about it.

"It's probably a good thing that they've got guys like us on the force now. You know all the Death Eaters weren't ever caught, and I know they haven't been causing any trouble, not since he isn't coming back, but it's good to be ready, yanno?" Ron watched as Hermione leaned against the table. When he was fourteen he had barely noticed that she was a girl at all, and now he couldn't not notice. She had curves, skin that looked incredibly soft, and she smelled nice. It was particularly easy to notice now that he was inside Hermione's flat, alone with her.

"Oh, she wants you to come for dinner. You could come on Sunday. That's when I usually go."

Hermione knew how much Ron wanted this. A chance to be out of the shadow and in the limelight. A way to prove he was more than just the youngest Weasley. Hermione smiled a bit before casting her eyes down. She already worried enough, but this was going to worry her to death. She was almost certain.

"I don't know why you boys think you need to keep saving the world. Didn't you have enough of that yet?" Hermione turned to him, her eyes boring into him. "Isn't there something more ...safe you could do?" Pushing herself up off of the table she made a move towards him. For a moment she just stood still, silently watching him. She was doing a lot of this.

Without warning she suddenly stepped foward, gently placing both hands on either side of his face. "I rather like you in one piece. Please be careful." Chocolate colored eyes pleaded with him to not doing anything stupid even though there was nothing going on!

Her hands dropped, one dragging down his arm. "Come on, let's go sit down." She gave his wrist a little tug, pulling him towards her couch. "You want me to come Sunday? I'm sure I could make it," she said over her shoulder. Why did her stomach flutter at the thought? She'd been to the Burrow millions of times before. This was no different.

Sitting down she patted the seat next to her. "Will your sister be there?"

"Well, I didn't really do so much saving." Ron kicked at the carpet and averted his eyes. He couldn't look at Hermione without thinking about how he had abandoned his friends when they really needed him. It was hard to think about how he'd been such a coward, how he'd left and Hermione had stayed. Those months were unbearable.

"Safer? I dunno. It's pretty save right now. Not much going on, and hey, you don't think I could handle myself?" She was inching closer towards him, something he did not fail to notice. He was about to open his mouth again to speak when she suddenly grabbed his face.

"One piece," he repeated quietly. He felt kind of dazed, like he was in some sort of dream. Hermione hadn't been that close to him in a long time. He wondered if maybe he should kiss her, but then she was gone, her fingertips leaving a burning trail down his arm before tugging him towards the couch.

"Yeah, Sunday." He tried to regain his composure as he sat down next to her. His knee bumped into her leg.

"Ginny, uhh, I'm not sure. I'll have to send her an owl to ask, but she usually shows up. I bet you talk to her more than I do these days."

"Oh honestly, Ron. You --" Hermione faltered when his knee came into contact with her leg. When she initiated contact it was all right. But the moment it was the other way around it seemed like a dream. Ron hardly ever made a move to touch her.

"You still don't give yourself enough credit." She scooted closer, angling her body more in his direction. "I clearly think you can handle it all. I just would rather that you were safe and sound always. That way you would never have to miss a single dinner at the Burrow." And she'd never have to miss him a single day. She smiled at him.

"You're sisters a bit hard to see, too. She's got that crazy Quidditch schedule. I was hoping to con her into a lunch date with me. In fact we had started to discuss it, but I believe it's gotten away from me. I certainly hope she shows up to dinner. I'd love to see her."

"Credit." Ron expelled air from between his lips loudly and settled deeper into the couch cushions. Maybe it was one of the reasons he couldn't seem to just make a move with Hermione. He never felt like he'd be good enough for her.

He tried to lighten the mood, laughing quietly. Everything just seemed so much louder in this house, especially since they were alone. "Oh, come on. Safe and sound isn't fun. Mum could deal with me missing a dinner or two." He wondered though, if that was true. Molly Weasley had been the same loving woman as always, but since Fred had died she had been a little sadder, a little more empty than usual. A few years had passed, but he knew that would never make much of a difference with his parents, and definitely not with George.

"Yeah, she's always surrounded by adoring fans and all that." He scoffed again. Even his sister was a bigger star than him. "You should send her an owl, I guess." Very casually, he placed his arm on the back of the couch. It wasn't close enough to Hermione that it looked like he was putting his arm around her, per se, but it was maybe in the realm of possibility.

Hermione wanted to just scream. Nobody could stand Ron missing a few dinners, least of all Hermione. He needed to be here safe and sound. Safe. That's all she wanted for them.

Hermione had noticed his arm, but tried to not look into it too much. "I really should send her an owl. I keep meaning to and then I get sidetracked. I've only had two real evenings to myself. I thought Quidditch was starting up soon. She might just be a bit busy."

Her hand reached out then, poking him in the knee lightly, lingering just a bit. "So tell me Ron Weasley anything exciting happening? Any lucky girls?" Now why had she asked that? Because if we were being truthful that was the last thing she wanted to know about.

"Is this one of your evenings alone? I didn't mean to bother you, I just thought it would be nice to visit." He silently chastised himself for sounding like a ponce. It would be nice to visit? Merlin. Sometimes, when things were this awkward with Hermione, Ron thought back to being sixteen and being with Lavender Brown. She certainly hadn't minded his awkwardness, and he really had to owe his ability to kiss at all to her. She had been mildly appalled the first time they'd kissed and had quickly corrected his technique. Then Hermione and the stupid canaries -- the corners of his mouth turned up slightly as he thought about it.

"Girls?" He choked. Ron frantically wondered if Hermione could read his mind, could tell that he'd been thinking about Lav for just a second. Or .. no, maybe not. Maybe she was hoping he'd tell her about some girl he'd met so she could get away with telling him about whatever guy she was seeing. Ron had a tendency to be incredibly paranoid, which was mostly due to his terrible insecurity. He took his arm off the couch and draped it over his leg instead.

"No girls. How about you, uhh, not girls though."

"Ron, I'm pleased that you came to visit me. You know, contrary to popular belief I actually like having company every so often. Actually, I like your company." ...Had she really just said that. A pink color quickly rose to her cheeks. How could she have just carelessly said that?! Perhaps he would miss that whole thing entirely.

Hermione had begun rearranging herself on the couch, but in reality she was moving closer. Secretly she hoped Ron wouldn't notice. "You're not seeing anyone?" To say she was pleased would be an understatement. But she wasn't going to let him know that.

"I'm surprised, really. But you shouldn't even have to ask me. You know the answer to that. I work too much to even meet anyone." Although, there was the small fact that she still owled Viktor, but she would keep that part to herself. At least for now.

"Yeah?" Ron perked up a bit at her admission, though even he didn't realize exactly what Hermione was saying. He did notice the blood flooding her face, however. It was nice, really. Made her look alive.

"No, I'm not seeing anyone." Ron did notice Hermione moving closer. While he was not great at picking up verbal hints, he was painfully aware of every physical movement his friend made. "You should take a break, sometimes. Or maybe you could meet someone at work?" WHY? Why was he trying to convince Hermione to find a boyfriend?!

His voice lowered in pitch. "Scratch that. All the guys at the Ministry are dolts anyway, you wouldn't find anyone you liked there. Maybe you should just be alone." Ugh. Now she was going to think that he was insulting her, trying to force her to be some old hag.

"You've already got part of the crazy cat lady bit down, I guess." He had not failed to notice Crookshanks lurking around the side of the couch.

Hermione sat, staring blankly at Ron. Had he really just said what she thought he had said? Alone? Cat lady? Wouldn't Ron just love that?

Shaking her head she made a face. "Alone? That's how you want me to spend my life? Alone!?" She had sat up straight then, placing her hands onto her hips. "As a crazy cat lady!?" Crazy!? Oh, she could show him crazy.

"Just because I'm not dating someone doesn't mean that I don't fancy someone!" She bit out, falling back into the couch and crossed her arms over her chest. Git.
