Hermione Jean Granger ([info]ex_enchantin428) wrote in [info]ultrarpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger.
When: Monday evening sometime.
Where: Hermione's flat.
What: A surprise visit from Ron :D.
Rating: PG-13 -- simply because Ron has a potty mouth.
Status: Complete.

Hermione's day had been quiet, well planned out. She had systematically checked off everythign on her list. And for the second time in less than a week Hermione had managed to finish up what she had wanted done before she went home. She really was making head way on her projects at work and it brought her such happiness. Soon there would be more rights for all creatures. It was everything she had ever dreamed of!  Having any free time was a rare opportunity. If truth be told she was rather enjoying this little development. It gave her all the time in the world to relax in her home and keep an eye on Crookshanks. She had yet to get to the bottom of that mystery! But she was working on it.

Nestled into a large chair, her copy of Hogwarts: A History was splayed out onto her lap. One hand absently flipped the pages while the other hand gently stroked Crookshanks head.  It was nights like these that Hermione truly enjoyed. It gave her every chance to unwind. The stress of the day was gone and Hermione was able to concentrate on something that wasn't work related. She loved those moments. Reaching out she grabbed her cup of tea, slowly bringing it to her lips so that she could take a drink.

Nothing could be more perfect tonight. Well, maybe one thing.

Ron was staring at his lap, staring at the hand that had just touched Hermione's thigh. Seemed like it should look different or something. He took a deep breath and tried to concentrate, to focus, to figure out what to say or how to fix this situation. Why couldn't he just act like an adult? Ron was fairly certain that most 22-year-old boys didn't freak out if they touched a girl's leg. No, in fact, even thinking about it was stupid. He supposed he really should have gone out sometime in the last five years and met someone, gotten all the awkward sex stuff over with so he wasn't so stupid now, but there was no use wishing at this point. To Ron, the last five years had barely happened. Sometimes he felt like he was stuck in a twenty-two-year-old's body with a seventeen-year-old's brain. Everyone else had moved on, even his little sister (he really didn't want to think about what Ginny had been doing with her spare time) while he was just stuck.

He couldn't look up. "Maybe I should go home." He said quietly. It really seemed like the best idea at this point.

Slowly turning Hermione sat down next to him. Her legs dangled off the side of the bed. She had wanted to reach over and take this hand. But how could she right now? Had things not gotten so out of hand perhaps she would have. Maybe she just needed a bit more courage.

Neither of them had moved on. They were both stuck in this endless loop and she wanted it to end. She wanted to just let it all out. It was obvious, though, that perhaps Ron wasn't ready for that admission from her. She felt her heart squeeze painfully when he mentioned going home.

It probably would have been for the better, but the illogical side of her brain wasn't processing it properly. "If you really want to go I won't make you stay."

"Hermione.." Ron sighed, staring hard at his friend as if maybe she could somehow just read his mind, take all the thoughts and feelings he couldn't control and sort them out for him. He had the weirdest tearing sensation in his belly at the moment, as if maybe he had done something horribly wrong but also horribly right.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled and stood up, collecting his shoes from underneath the bed and shoving his feet into them. "I didn't mean to ruin your night." That wasn't what he wanted to say, though! He wanted to say so many different things but this just wasn't the time, wasn't the place to say them. He didn't know when the time or the place would be, exactly, but he couldn't think clearly now.

One thing Hermione had promised herself was that she was not going to cry. At least not in front of him. So instead she bit down onto her bottom lip, watching him watch her. As strange as it might have seemed she might have understood some. It probably stemmed from her own thoughts. On some level she knew how he felt.

"You don't have to be sorry about anything. You didn't ruin my night," she said quietly. It was hardly his fault. Pulling her feet up she tucked them off to the side of her body. "I'm glad you came." And truly she was.

Ron had his doubts that Hermione was actually glad he'd come. He'd interrupted her book, made a mess in her kitchen (which she would surely find later and scold him for), fought with her about various men, and literally caused the most awkward night he'd had in five years. He was sure it must have ranked pretty high on her list of awkward nights as well.

"You know this, this would have been weird." Ron was shaking his head, almost talking to himself instead of his friend. Maybe he was trying to convince himself he was doing the right thing by leaving. Five years ago, when Hermione had come on to him, he had given in so easily, completely oblivious to the fact that a war was going on. Today she was asking him to spend the night and he was running off in fright. Clearly things were backwards here. He wondered when it would get better. Then he wondered if it would ever get better. Maybe they'd had a chance once and now it was gone. Time's up.

He couldn't even look at her as he got ready to apparate.

There it was -- his defeatus attitude. She knew that Ron. She knew he didn't believe her. So things hadn't been perfect, but things have been them. Well, sort of. She couldn't just let him go like this.

"Ron, wait!" As quickly as her little legs would take her she scrambled off of the bed, nearly falling as she did so having gotten caught up in her sheets. Wouldn't that have been graceful? It probably would have just added to all the excitement to the evening.

Even though he hadn't been facing her she still flung herself at him. She wrapped her arms around his middle, squeezing a bit. Resting her cheek on his back she sighed. "I really am happy you came by. Even if it was weird." She felt like maybe by being this close to him the truth would seep into him.

Ron froze. He had literally been three seconds away from disapparating without even saying goodbye. He looked down slowly, eyeing Hermione's arms and their position tucked securely around his waist. He closed his eyes and leaned very gently backwards, just enough that his back was pressing her front without too much force. He liked feeling close to her that way despite the fact that neither one could say anything even close to that out loud.

Ron placed his own hands across Hermione's, sort of like he was hugging himself and Hermione's arms just happened to be in the way. It was almost easier this way, without looking at her face. Ron instantly regretted thinking that, but it wasn't like she could read his mind. In theory.

Hermione couldn't explain the relief she felt when he didn't pull away from her, but instead leaned into her. It had been subtle, but just enough. She took a deep breath, breathing that familiar scent of Ron in. But now that she was here how could she let go? How could she even be thinking that.

Instead of thinking, for probably one of the first times in her life, she just did. She stopped thinking about everything and just allowed herself to enjoy the moment with him. It would be over soon, she knew he would leave. Hermione was sure that she would seem pathetic, clinging to him. Most of her dignity was already in shreds so what else did she have to lose?

"I'll see you, uhm, later." Ron gently pried himself from Hermione's grasp and took a step towards the door. He knew he should turn around and say something to her, to apologize again for something he wasn't even sure he was doing, but there just weren't any words. Ron wanted to go home and think. He'd probably spend the night tossing and turning, unable to get any actual sleep, and then he'd be dead tired in the morning. Maybe he'd be able to get Harry alone long enough to try and talk to him about the whole thing.

Ron turned very slightly to look at Hermione over his shoulder. His face twisted into a look of pleading, hoping that she'd just understand what he'd never been able to say, that she wouldn't be too mad at him this time, and then he disapparated.
