afternoon at mother's house.
Subject: Look who's back among the living
Who: Mary Roper
Where: A park near Anna's rented townhouse in the fashionable section of town.
Warnings: none
Open to:  whoever

The young lady's eyes were wide and dreamy, her face serene if not exactly happy. Her dress was new and the latest thing from Paris. Anna had made it her immediate mission to begin her daughter's new career as the daughter of Italian nobility- there were already papers attesting that Cesare Manzoni was her father and her name was to be Mariana Lidia dei patrizi Manzoni. She even had a circlet to wear when they went to Italy. So the dress was new, the shoes.. everything. She'd not returned to Harry's house and she supposed now she might never get the opportunity though she missed Lady Jane's kind unwavering face. Mother was insistent about the rounds of balls and parties  they were to attend now, and there always seemed to be more of them. She was to be a courtesan perhaps, Mother said but it would be better to marry first. Advantageously. Added to those were lessons on Italian, literature and a madcap running through of politics and etiquette and fashionable dances. She'd scarcely had a chance to breathe, much less consider her decision to be here at all...

Mother said she was lucky- if only Mother had had someone to teach her all this so early on she might have achieved even greater fortunes and titles. Mariana had tried her best to look grateful though she was none too sure she wanted much part of it. The games her mother enjoyed were difficult and for all their edges didn't have the razors of old Jon's or Slater's, there were dark places as well.

She sat delicately as she had seen other real ladies do- back straight and shoulders positioned just so, head at a certain angle as she turned at the sound of footsteps. "Good afternoon, Miss Manzoni," a passerby said. He was familiar, well-dressed, his features more handsome than not. Probably an acqauintance from the last party...  the one the other night at Lady... oh, Lady Someone's. She nodded without much interest though she summoned a warm smile and smoothed  the cream skirt of her dress.

"Good afternoon," she said with a small nod. Even the voice was barely her own, the accent copied from her mother's, complete with occasional slight accents hinting at time spent abroad.  He tipped his hat.

"I hope I may still call on you tomorrow?"

"Indeed. I shall be counting the hours," she said with a smile she told herself was real.

A few more moments of idle chatter passed, the man smiling and her own gaze admiring, and then he left and she settled back into the safer confines of her imagination as she gazed down the path that would lead her back to Mother's house. There the palace of Paribanou stood, grand and great and empty; masked from mortal eyes and to it she was bound to return. But there was no returning whence she had come, for that way lay only an emptiness more vast than any fairy cavern and twice as dark. She had bound herself to the djinn and what came before could never come again- going onward was the only chance. This new game brought a chance for leaving everything where it ought to be. With a sigh, Mariana Lidia dei patrizi Manzoni rose from her seat and began making her way along the path which would lead her to her mother and another round of parties.

Patience still listened to gossip even if she didn’t partake in it anymore. After all, not listening would be rude and more than that would leave her without the most important thing any socialite ever had – knowledge. Oh, you didn’t need books or anything so boring as that but knowing who was who and what they did and who they went around with – on such important things were marriages and empires formed.

And she was quite surprised to hear that there was an Italian aristocrat and her daughter on their shores now, and quite delighted if gossip had proved true that she was about to run into the daughter.

"Miss Manzoni?" She questioned.

Mary was startled out of her dreams by the voice and turned wide eyes on the person who had spoken. A beautiful girl who looked like the picture of a fairy princess. Her smile was hesitant- she wasn't yet accustomed to girls who looked like fairytales speaking to her. A part of her had been a nursemaid and a servant and worse but luckily for Mary, she could hide behind her part. The girl looked vaguely familiar as if she had seen her before somewhere though perhaps only in passing.

"Indeed," she said in the voice of Mariana Lidia. "I am sorry, you seem to have the advantage over me this afternoon- I do not believe we have been introduced as yet?"

“Oh,” Patience said, not a bit disappointed to discover she was un-known to the young lady. After all she had guessed correctly. “Miss Patience Hurst. You must excuse my rudeness, I would have been just awfully embarrassed if I had been incorrect, but I had been hearing quite a lot about you and I cannot stand to hear so much yet not be able to put a face to the name.” Or know the truth of what I have heard, she thought to herself.

Mary blushed and hurried to address Patience- of course, Lord Hurst's daughter... "There is nothing to excuse but my own scattered thoughts, Miss Hurst. I should have recognized you at once- everyone always remarks on your eyes and they are so remarkable. It's only that I fear I'm not... entirely accustomed to London yet." Anna's story had been that she had been raised in the quiet of the country by her father's request and there was of course the quiet whispers that she might have been in a convent school but there were always rumors and she had no idea what Patience might have heard. "I do hope you've not heard anything too terrible," Mary added with a shy smile.

"How kind of everyone." Patience said, a smile on her lips. She would have to remember that her eyes were her most remarked on feature and make the most of them in the future. "Nothing terrible at all! Nothing very much in fact. Only that you are here with your mother, and that your father is unfortunately no longer with us."

“I would suppose London society to be quite different to Italy, no?” She asked, beginning to walk and gesturing for Miss Manzoni to join her.

Mary smiled at Patience reaction to the compliment but it faded quickly as they walked along the path. "I cannot truly say, Miss Hurst. We thought it best I wait until Papa was better before I was presented to society but fate was not so kind. So you see I have very little experience in society of anywhere... but I think things here are lovely." She glanced at Patience. "You seem so beautifully at ease with it all- how do you manage?"

"Really? I'm so sorry to hear that." Patience said. She had not had much to do with introductions - as the only daughter of her family she had been in the public eye since her birth and since there had been no older sisters to be married off first she hadn't felt the need for a formal introduction to society.

"Oh, it's simply a mixture of good breeding and time. Once you've been here for a year or so you'll find it becomes so much easier." Patience said, feeling rather delighted to be asked her advice on such a matter. Normally no one asked her thoughts on anything more important than ribbons - and while that was important- this was a more mature question.

"I would give up any chance at society if it would have kept Papa here but... well. It is not for us to wish things is it?" she sighed.

The idea of good breeding nearly made her wince. She was a child of djinn- it wasn't the same thing. "A year?" she said with a little distress. "I must sound very silly to you. Mother has talked of returning to Italy in a few months. Just when I might begin to feel I might be able to manage as you say," she gave Patience a timid half smile. "But... how do you keep all the faces and names straight? I confess I am always finding myself at a loss and frightened of addressing Lady Marcus by Lady Atwater's name or forgetting how to say some French lady's name."

"God has a reason for everything" Patience said softly, hoping that at least might be a comfort to her.

"Back to Italy? Are you sure it's safe to go back to the continent now? With all that's happening in France I mean? Father says it wouldn't surprise him if that awful revolution spread! England might soon be the safest place around!" Patience said, finding herself quite worried and rather protective of this new girl. She was obviously in need of someone to guide her through society and Patience would be almost too perfect. Mina would be so proud of her.

"Oh, if I ever find myself in that sort of situation I simply say 'Your Ladyship' or 'Madame' and I find that usually covers all situations and makes you sound so very respectful."

Mary smiled. She found herself warming to Miss Hurst- she wasn't like Delia or the other friends she'd had so long ago. She was lovely enough to make your head swim but she was still... human.

"I think Mama misses Italy is all. She is so longing to see it again that I imagine the idea of Revolution has scarcely occured to her." Not entirely true- Mary knew her mother was only too eager to see if France would give birth to a new aristocracy and had ideas that Mary should be making a match to that new set. She wasn't sure it would be as grand as mother said, but arguing with Anna was worse than pointless. "Myself, I think England does seem safer and more... what's that word? Like a home, maybe?"

She giggled at Patience advice. "Oh, Miss Hurst, that's perfect!" she said in admiration. Every time Mary fumbled a name she'd been subjected to mother's scathing words and this new trick was so simple... "I am ever so glad you spoke to me today- I believe you have just saved me from at least a thousand embarrassments."

"A home? What a lovely thing to say. I'm delighted to hear you find England so hospitable." Patience said, rather overcome with patriotic pride.

"Thank you, but I shouldn't have all the credit. My mother taught me so many little tricks like that." Patience said, thinking to her self that it was rather strange Miss Manzoni's mother had not instructed her daughter similarly, although it was not her place to pry, no matter how much she might want to.

"Ah. You are very lucky." Mary's gaze fell on the path again. Anna was not patient and she didn't see any reason that Mary shouldn't fall into everything as easily as she did. Mary privately thought that's what made her so frightening- there wasn't anything human enough in Anna to feel uncertain or unhappy. Even if she could still cry prettily. "Mama forgets I have not already been out in society, I think. It would be funny if I wasn't so lost." She smiled. "There was a party last night though- I wonder if you were there? I've forgotten the host's name already, but there was a girl there- Lady Angelique. She said she's to be giving a grand ball sometime soon. Mama has said we will doubtlessly be going. Will you be there as well? I've never been to a real ball, and her ladyship said something like it will be a masquerade?"

"I'm sure I will be going yes, Angelique is my cousin." Patience said, a smile fixed on her face. "That is if you meant Angelique Worthington. A masquerade? Oh that would be delightfully good fun. I always think masks make everything more exciting. You never know who you're talking to!"

She paused, and then added as she could never resist a jab at her cousin. "And it does sound like the sort of thing Angelique would host."

Mary laughed at Patience's ideas on the subject. "Truly- cousins? What a small world it is. I thought it sounded like fun- especially as I shouldn't have to worry so much over names when everyone's in a mask." She cast a sidelong glance at Patience at the further mention of Angelique. "Is Miss Worthington very much noted for her masquerades?"

"I'm afraid I wouldn't know. Angelique has been living in France for most of her life and I have never been, but I do hear she was quite something of a hostess." Patience said, recovering herself and remembering what she had said to Mina. She was attempting not to gossip, and more than that to think positively of everyone and say positive things of them. "I'm sure it shall be thrilling!"
