Aimé did not particularly wish to be there at this moment in time. It was not that he disliked the Hurst’s, quite the contrary he found them to be charming and although Lord Hurst was often unorthodox in his desires he was not an unkind lover. He showered Aimé with gifts and understood if the boy was not feeling up to playing the part but he still wasn’t the man Aimé loved and so he paled in comparison. To make matters worse Aimé had been out of sorts since Mercedes had sent him his letter and he was beginning to worry Lord Hurst’s patience was wearing thin.

Sighing he fixed a smile onto his face, determined that for this night at least he would not dwell upon Mercedes. Although first he felt he would need a stiff drink.

Demetri was dreading this night. Part of him wanted to refuse and not go anywhere near Lord Hurst's but he knew society would not be so forgiving if he did. The fact that this part was for 'him', did nothing to help. But Demetri was determined to be cordial to his host. He would just have to try and avoid Sergius Petrov as much as possible.

He made his way inside and figured the best way to get through it all was a large drink or three. Demetri smiled at the young man already there. "Monsieur Laurent, is it not?" he asked picking up his glass. "We met at Lord Wexley's funeral."

Aimé was busy filling his own glass with a fine vintage of port when the other man spoke to him. He glanced at him, taking a moment to place him and then smiled.
"Monsieur Blake. I remember. We really should stop meeting like this, but at least I've not spilled my drink on you yet." He said with a light laugh. "What is your poison tonight?" He gestured to the fine array of spirits, enough to suit any man's pleasure he was sure.

Demetri smiled and nodded. "Yes it is. And you are quite right, though I do not mind." He laughed. "I promise I do not fault you for that. As I recall I did bump into you." He looked over the selection and motioned toward Aimé 's own drink. "Port yes? I don't think that would be bad to start with."

"Port." Aimé agreed, pouring a glass for Demetri and handing it over to him. "So, who's guest are you? Lord Hurst's? Or the man on the hour, Mr. Petrov's?"

Demetri smiled and took the glass when it was offered to him. "Thank you." He took a sip but stiffened at the mention of Petrov. He looked at Aimé and did smile again at him. "No I am a guest of Lord Hursts. His family and mine have been close for many years."

"Oh, of course." Aimé said, feeling rather foolish as he was sure he'd asked a similar question of the man at Lord Wexely's funeral. “I’m sorry, I feel so distracted this evening – not the best mood for a party guest to be in.”

"Think nothing of it. Last time was certainly one for distraction, and a ball is best for non-seriousness," Demetri said and smiled at the other man. "You have nothing to apologise, though I am sorry to hear you are not having a good time. Nothing I could to do help?" he asked, only half-joking.

Aimé glanced at the young man. He was attractive, if one went for boyish charm and good-looks but Aimé was much more settled towards older, more wise faces and he doubted the man had meant something like that - it was simply his perverse mind that called attention to the double meaning. Besides, a tumble wouldn't inspire him to forget Mercedes.

"Pour me another drink." He said, finishing his glass and passing it to the man. "And maybe if you have time, listen to a story of lost love? It's about a coward who's too frightened to give up his position. It ends tragically I promise you."

Demetri smiled back at the young Frenchman. He was rather attractive and he did like that accent, he thought to himself but pushed those thoughts down. Thinking like that would only bring him heartache again. No drinks and talking would be just fine.

He poured another glass of port and handed it to the other and smiled. "I have plenty of time. And perhaps if you would induldge me, I too have a story of lost love, and ends tragically as well." Demetri poured himself another glass as well. "But please Monsieur I pray you continue."

"We can commiserate together then," Aimé said, smiling back and raising to the glass to him before taking another sip. "My story is, naturally, about social standing - those who have it and those who don't - and duty. I met...a person who was quite the most wonderful person I have ever know, although jealous to a fault, but too low for my family to be seen associating with, unless it was from charity."

He took another sip, bigger this time, hoping the alcohol might do something to wash away the shame and guilt. "A merchant, and not a very good one, always in debt I'm sorry to say, but I was still in love all the same. My brother found out and was furious, made me promise to break it off but I didn't...couldn't, so finally he broke it off for me."

"Indeed we can." Demetri leaned back and took a drink as he listened to the story Aimé told him. It struck him deep, not just because of what happened but for how near it was to his own story. "It sounds as though you met someone very special," he said. It is detriment to the times that one can not love those they want. And forgive me for saying but your brother gave you a rather bad turn of things."

He took another drink and sighed softly. "I am truly sorry for what has happened Monsieur. Truly."

Aimé waved his hand, as if trying to wave away the man's sympathy.
"My brother did what he thought he had to do. I was the one who let it happen, who didn't stop him."

He took another deep gulp of the port, the liquor burning in the back of his throat. "So, your story, sir?"

"Mousier Laurent!" He recognised the boy almost immediately, after all, he had sent the boy's discription all over England only a few weeks ago. "Monsieur, what a pleasure to see you here of all places. Your brothers and your father are all keeping well too, I assume?" He said, lighting a black-wrapped cigarette and enjoying the first breath of smoke. "It has been such a very long time since I saw you last, has it not?"

Aimé stiffened, not wishing to have to have this conversation with Monsieur Belmont of all people but he knew he had to be polite for the sake of his host. "Quite, since the party you threw, in fact." He said quietly, hoping he could finish these pleasantries quickly and move on. "My father is at home, resting, and my brother, the one I still know anything of, is fine."

"How are your family keeping?"

"As well as ever. The family business is going from strength to strength, however. As I am sure you can imagine." He smiled, and glanced back to the party. "Lord Hurst told me your brother was also here, Aimé. Perhaps I shall get a chance to corner you both this fine evening?"

Aimé could not help but feel that the ambassador's version of cornering would involve handcuffs and a one way trip to France but he said nothing of the sort, determined to remain civil - at least on the surface.
"Maybe you will, sir."

"Now now, Monsieur Aimé, we are not at Versailles. The English do not like people to make scenes. That is why this evening is so dull." He said, expression unchanging. "Would you like to discuss it if, say, I had a formal warrant for your arrest? Or, say, for your fathers execution?"

"For your information that is hardly true, there has already been a fight this evening." Aimé said, although his face fell at the man's next words and he fought to keep his composure. "You don't. If you did you'd not be wasting your time with pleasantries. And leave my father alone - he's a sick old man. All you'd accomplish is having him die in prison."

"A long, painful death in poor conditions away from his children. Not a death I would wish on my father." Although perhaps he would. "All you need to do is provide me with the information I need, Aimé, and your father will be safe. You are all in England now, are you not? Here things are different, I would not dream of asking you anything but politely."

Aimé gritted his teeth, wishing for nothing more than the ability to follow the low-class man’s example and punch the ambassador soundly for that suggestion but he didn't have the bravery, nor stupidity to attempt such a thing.
"No. I wouldn't betray them. Besides, I couldn't tell you even if I wanted to. It was all arranged anonymously."

"Aimé, if I believed that I would be a foolish man indeed." He explained, "And you would be even more the fool for not taking the chance to save your family from justice but..." Léon shrugs, "I could understand why you wish your brother so suffer, after what he made you do in Paris."
