Aimé gritted his teeth, wishing for nothing more than the ability to follow the low-class man’s example and punch the ambassador soundly for that suggestion but he didn't have the bravery, nor stupidity to attempt such a thing.
"No. I wouldn't betray them. Besides, I couldn't tell you even if I wanted to. It was all arranged anonymously."

"Aimé, if I believed that I would be a foolish man indeed." He explained, "And you would be even more the fool for not taking the chance to save your family from justice but..." Léon shrugs, "I could understand why you wish your brother so suffer, after what he made you do in Paris."

"I am telling you the truth..." Aimé began, but stopped short, unable to believe what he had heard for a moment. "How do you know about that?" He hissed.

"Did you think no-one knew, Monsieur? Your fellow nobles, they saw, and many of them knew who worked your relationships to your family's advantage. Not your ageing, grieving father, or young, rebellious Augustine. Very rebellious. no, not them. They suspected, Aimé, and many of them wrote down their suspicious in their little pocket books, or in their letters. Your Marquis of Messát, he wrote to his friend of your youth and beauty... need I say more?"

"Writing about youth and beauty are a crime now are they?" Aimé asked, face bleached of all colour. How he dearly hoped that the Marquis of Messát's letters had been all that the damned revolutionaries had got their hands on and not the man himself. "I fail to see how that means anything more than a throw away comment."

Léon can't help but tut as he takes another drag on the foul-smelling cigarette. "No, but writing down how one has sodomised a young man in return for property in Paris might be considered a crime. Lord Hurst's friends have written a great deal of the same, is that why he invited you, Aimé?"

"Stop it! Just stop it, I don't have to answer your questions and if Lord Hurst knew you had read his letters...How did you get a hold of them? Whose your little spy?" Aimé hissed, so angry now he could hardly breathe.

Léon shrugged, "I am afraid I can not tell you that. After all, you would not tell me what I asked for, and honesty works two ways. I wonder how keen the English would be to keep you here if they discovered your very colourful past, Monsieur? I do not think even Lord Hurst could save your reputation. Or his own, for that matter. Have you heard about his latest child? Named after his father, I have heard."

"I did tell you the truth." Aimé said, beginning to feel trapped but he knew that was what the man wanted. "You could see the letter for yourself if I thought you trustworthy which I do not."

"What?" He whispered. "No, his youngest is Crispin."

"For a sodomite you are very naive, Aimé. Crispin is his youngest legitimate child. Did you think that a man would only sleep with his wife? Mon dieu!" He says, more amused then he had been yet that evening. "Did you think you were his only affair? Even while seeing you he has two women- an Earl's daughter and the Lady Walbridge-Grey. And I have no idea how many boys, as well as women, he had known before you."

"No." Aimé said quietly. He didn't believe it to be true, couldn't believe it. Lord Hurst had seemed so shy, so worried that Aimé might refuse his requests when they'd first met that he could hardly imagine him complicate in so many affairs. "You're lying!"

"Am I, indeed?" Léon said, smiling, "Why does it worry you so, Aimé? You were hardly a virgin, and you are certainly not his wife. Did he tell you he loved you? Is that why you look as if he has broken your heart?" Léon said, finishing off his cigarette and passing the remains to a near-by servant. "You should ask the young Irish lady, Madamosielle Linley. She is such a fountain of knowledge! Or the Madame Rochester. She too, knows more about your dear Lord then you seem to. I wonder, did Antoine know of this before he arranged your relationship?"

"I am not broken-hearted, and don't you call my brother's integrity into question. If Lord Hurst kept such a thing from me then he had a reason." Aimé said, trying to look and sound much braver and resolute then he felt. “You are hardly one to talk about fidelity, sir. I have heard rather a few things about you, Monsuir. You shouldn’t call me a sodomite so freely when you engage in the act yourself and your taste runs towards young boys who have no say in refusing your disgusting, old corpse.”

"Aimé, you must have misheard me. I did not condemn the actions of Lord Hurst. He is an English Lord and maintaining the fine traditions of his position. You, however..." He said, smiling again, "I know many street-whores pimped out by their brothers, but none from the aristos. You must be very proud."

"I am sure you would." Aimé said nastily. "Tell me, does he begin to cry while you're still there or does he have the decency to wait until after you've left? You can’t really believe your whore enjoys what you do to him."

"I do not know, perhaps you could tell me, do you like being fucked?" Léon asked, reaching for the inside pocket of his jacket and removing a piece of folded paper. "This is a letter to an influential member of the English Church, a man who also holds a seat in the House of Lords. It explains your past indiscretions, with evidence, and evidence of your current... affair. This is only a copy, of course, but I shall probably be sending it tonight. Would you care to read it now, or when it reaches the news papers?"

"Give that to me," Aimé hissed, trying to snatch it from the man's hand. "What is it you want? For me to betray my family? Or do you just want me? All these questions about my life behind closed doors, I am starting to wonder."

"Your family are unimportant, insignificant. I have already promised them safety tonight, if you had not been so focused on your self, perhaps you would have heard and remembered that." Léon told him, tucking the paper away. "You can have it, if you wish, and I will destroy the other copy, if you tell me what I have already asked for. Who brought you to England, who arranged it, when did you go and where from?"

"But I keep telling you I don't know!" Aimé said. "It was all there in a letter- we were to be arrested, the letter said, but the writer had made safe passage for us, but we had to leave that night!"

"And you know nothing about the identity of your captain, the name of the ship, the port which you left from, or the date? Monsieur, I did not think you were so inquisitive."

"I told you it was all arranged. If my brother makes the choice of who my bed partners are do you really think I would know any of those things?" Aimé asked coldly.

"Perhaps then, Monsieur, you should start finding things out. Or perhaps I should ask your brother for the information, as clearly he is the brains of the family."

"Maybe you should." Aimé said, in no mood to deal with the ambassador anymore. He was sure his brother could more than handle whatever threats the man thought up.
