"Port." Aimé agreed, pouring a glass for Demetri and handing it over to him. "So, who's guest are you? Lord Hurst's? Or the man on the hour, Mr. Petrov's?"

Demetri smiled and took the glass when it was offered to him. "Thank you." He took a sip but stiffened at the mention of Petrov. He looked at Aimé and did smile again at him. "No I am a guest of Lord Hursts. His family and mine have been close for many years."

"Oh, of course." Aimé said, feeling rather foolish as he was sure he'd asked a similar question of the man at Lord Wexely's funeral. “I’m sorry, I feel so distracted this evening – not the best mood for a party guest to be in.”

"Think nothing of it. Last time was certainly one for distraction, and a ball is best for non-seriousness," Demetri said and smiled at the other man. "You have nothing to apologise, though I am sorry to hear you are not having a good time. Nothing I could to do help?" he asked, only half-joking.

Aimé glanced at the young man. He was attractive, if one went for boyish charm and good-looks but Aimé was much more settled towards older, more wise faces and he doubted the man had meant something like that - it was simply his perverse mind that called attention to the double meaning. Besides, a tumble wouldn't inspire him to forget Mercedes.

"Pour me another drink." He said, finishing his glass and passing it to the man. "And maybe if you have time, listen to a story of lost love? It's about a coward who's too frightened to give up his position. It ends tragically I promise you."

Demetri smiled back at the young Frenchman. He was rather attractive and he did like that accent, he thought to himself but pushed those thoughts down. Thinking like that would only bring him heartache again. No drinks and talking would be just fine.

He poured another glass of port and handed it to the other and smiled. "I have plenty of time. And perhaps if you would induldge me, I too have a story of lost love, and ends tragically as well." Demetri poured himself another glass as well. "But please Monsieur I pray you continue."

"We can commiserate together then," Aimé said, smiling back and raising to the glass to him before taking another sip. "My story is, naturally, about social standing - those who have it and those who don't - and duty. I met...a person who was quite the most wonderful person I have ever know, although jealous to a fault, but too low for my family to be seen associating with, unless it was from charity."

He took another sip, bigger this time, hoping the alcohol might do something to wash away the shame and guilt. "A merchant, and not a very good one, always in debt I'm sorry to say, but I was still in love all the same. My brother found out and was furious, made me promise to break it off but I didn't...couldn't, so finally he broke it off for me."

"Indeed we can." Demetri leaned back and took a drink as he listened to the story Aimé told him. It struck him deep, not just because of what happened but for how near it was to his own story. "It sounds as though you met someone very special," he said. It is detriment to the times that one can not love those they want. And forgive me for saying but your brother gave you a rather bad turn of things."

He took another drink and sighed softly. "I am truly sorry for what has happened Monsieur. Truly."

Aimé waved his hand, as if trying to wave away the man's sympathy.
"My brother did what he thought he had to do. I was the one who let it happen, who didn't stop him."

He took another deep gulp of the port, the liquor burning in the back of his throat. "So, your story, sir?"

"If I know anything, it's that older brothers are other often hard to sway opinions from. Perhaps down the road, things will be different." At least his merchant was still alive, Demetri thought to himself, his face growing a bit sadder.

"Ah my story," he said, forcing a smiling and downing half his glass of port. "I went to school in Paris, met a wonderful student who opening my eyes to things merely in front of me. His family disapproved to the extent that they had me blackmailed to force my hand and promise never to see him again. Later there was word that he had died.

And now I'm back in England permanently, trying to find out what to do other than gamble and spend time at the wrong sorts of theatre." Demetri laughed a little but it wasn't completely happy, though he was feeling good from the quick succession of port he and his companion were consuming.

"Him?" Aimé asked quickly, wanting to be sure he had heard the man correctly although he was sure he'd said the gender enough times that Aimé wouldn't have mis-heard him. The prospect of finding someone with whom he could tell the whole truth, everything about Mercedes and about now with Lord Hurst was a prospect he wanted dearly.

Demetri flushed. It must be the alcohol or maybe he just wanted so much to not have to hide who he was that he let it slip. He lowered his voice a bit and nodded. "You heard me correctly. Hence why the blackmail worked so effectively. I could not let that get to society, if for no other reason than I would not wish it up on my family."

He finished his drink and put the glass down. "I apologise if I have offended you sir with my frankness, and do please oppotune myself to ask that you not repeat it to anyone."

"Blackmail?" Aimé asked, brow furrowed in confusion. "What blackmail?"

"I wouldn't repeat it, sir. I was...am pleased by your frankness. I've wanted so often to talk openly about everything, about the man I loved and haven't had the bravery to do so." He said, his voice hardly more than a whisper.

Demetri's voice caught in his throat. "Someone says they will tell my family about... him and it would ruin not only me but them as well. They bid me do tasks to keep the secret."

But Demetri smiled at Aimé. "You may be as frank with me sir. And feel free to talk to me as you will. Perhaps we can both speak more easy on the subject."

"Who? Who would know or do such a thing?" Aimé asked, shocked. "Is there no-one you can go to? No-one you trust who could help?"

He had never been in a situation like the one his new friend was in now. Antoine had always dealt with everything and if anyone had tried to cause trouble he had silenced them before they could say or do anything incriminating.

"I am so glad to have met you," Aimé said, although he spoke more into his glace then out at the man. "I was beginning to go insane with no-one knowing what pain I'm in. My brother would never hear of it and...and I am supposed to be attached to our host."

Demetri sighed and shook his head. "I dare not risk it. If I asked for help, it is likely they would find out the nature of my problem. I am in a no win situation in that regard."

But he smiled at Aimé. "I am glad too." He reached for the port to pour himself some more and offered to his companion. "Not many can know what it must be like having to suffer in such silence...." He trailed off and glanced around for Lord Hurst. "Lord Hurst? You are much acquainted with him?"

This wasn't good, he thought as his mind filled with worry. "If you know Lord Hurst, then I must tell you. You asked who would do this to me, and I aught not speak of it to keep more trouble from me, but I say it now in hopes of keeping you from a similar predicament. He is the very one Lord Hurst throws this part for, the guest of honour."

"Yes," Aimé said, rather confused. "Personally, if that is important."

"His friend? Mr Petrvo? But why would Lord Hurst throw a party for such a man? Do you think he knows what he's like? Or do you think that Mr. Petrov knows about...about me?" He asked, rather fearful now.

Demetri frowned. "It is. OR at least I thought it was."

He shrugged as he reached his glass. "That's what confused me. Lord Hurst is usually a very smart man, at least for my part of what I know of him. Either he has no idea, or Mr Petrov has something on Lord Hurst and has made it very evident to him." Demetri gave Aimé a smile, concern for him on his face. "Unfortunately I don't know but I wouldn't put it past him either."

"Oh Lord." Aimé murmered, taking another gulp of the port in his glass. "I...I fear I know what Mr. Petrov would have against Lord Hurst. Considering what he is blackmailing you over."

Demetri looked at Aimé, not sure he heard right. "What do you mean Monsieur," he said looking around. And then he thought more on it. 'what he is blackmailing you over' the other had said. "You don't mean...." Demetri had never thought of it, his own thoughts always so close to home.

"I do mean...at least if we are considering the same thing." Aimé said quietly. "The reason my brother would not allow me to continue seeing the man I loved was he had made a match, between me and Lord Hurst. If this Mr. Petrov found out..."

Demetri slowly nodded, the words stuck in his throat. "I... I do believe we are. And unfortunately I can not say that Mr Petrov hasn't found out. Perhaps not about you specifically but.... well Lord Hurst threw him this ball. And yes it is possible that they have been friends and Lord Hurst did it out of friendship.... it leaves me with a bad feeling...." He didn't want to scare his friend but he had first hand experience with Petrov and what he could be like, and didn't wish that on anyone else.

"That's understandable." Aimé said, setting his glass down. He looked around the room, trying to catch a glimpse of Lord Hurst but the man was no where to be seen. "I...I could ask him, if I knew where he'd gone to."

Demetri looked around again as well. "I'm sorry, truly sorry if I've given you cause for alarm. And I do hope I am wrong in everything I've said." He noticed Petrov wasn't to be seen either. "And it also seems out guest of honour isn't to be seen at present either."

"Where could he have gone?" Aimé asked, looking around the room again. "Do you think they might have gone off somewhere together?"
